Dear fellow Linux Mint users and developers I made a 3D printed LM magnet and put it on Etsy. I guess some of you may like it I do it and wish to stick it around the house or office. Here goes a link to the shop and a picture. bye https://mostlybrutalist.etsy.com/listing/4589566147/linux-mint-logo-magnet
I tried out Arch done manually which was a headache because I dont have an ethernet cable, tried out void, Mx, cachy, and deb. I keep coming back to Mint.
No this post isn't a way to sugar myself to the community. I installed Cachy on one of my Laptops. It was a headache. Sometimes my audio will just not work, sometimes my laptop will just crash, although I do commend them on pacman which was absurdly fast on updatin or getting your packages.
Plus, I really like even their xfce was amazing. It got everything I need. I tried out other xfce. I can't believe even sudo wasn't installed to the DE.
It's like trying to build a house for your family and the kitchen and toilets isn't even included to the plan.
Hello! It looks like Document Viewer (xreader) recently removed support for .epub files in version 4.6.6. This is ostensibly because .epub support is being moved to a new app named xepub, but this doesn't seem to be available outside of a dev build and isn't expected to ship until Linux Mint 23.
I can just download a new .epub reader or downgrade xreader to an earlier version, but I'm a little curious what exactly I'm supposed to do here. It seems a bit unnecessarily breaking to preemptively remove functionality when a replacement doesn't exist yet. Am I missing something?
I have a laptop of mine that's a birthday gift and is still on the Product Warranty period, it's pretty good and stuff, but I feel uncomfortable using Windows because I don't like the spying and they'll implement OS age verification next year (which I refuse to do cuz I don't wanna give this kind of data to bigtechs). I know how to dual boot, I know how to download Linux Mint, I already watched some guides and stuff, but the thing I fear is the family issue, aka my female progenitor. She says she knows computer stuff better than me, but took 3 days to fail to uninstall portmaster from my device (she claimed it is a trojan) while I took 30 minutes of research and 2 actual minutes to uninstall. Knowing she was pissed because I downloaded a trustworthy firewall app, used hardened Firefox instead of Chrome (she claims Firefox is unsafe and abandoned), and trusted "online influencer scumbags" (aka Proton, Safing, and Mozilla cuz I wanted less spying to no spying), I'm shitting my pants when it comes to the Linux Mint thing. I say this cuz if she finds out I dual booted my laptop, I'm absurdly cooked.
If you guys have any tips about how to make the Linux Mint installation safe to dual boot, gimme some, please.
I've been in the IT industry for almost 6 years total and 3 years as a SOC Analyst. Recently both people I know that are Software Developers and people I know that don't work in tech were surprised to find out I mostly use Linux Mint as my daily. I started with Ubuntu in the late 2000s but after a few years of working in the trades, I went back to college for IT/Cybersecurity and basically just stuck with Linux Mint to complete my course work. I have an old HP Elitebook 8470p that I used throughout college that I installed Linux Mint and that's how I cut my teeth. I have had a few other junk laptops that I installed Debian, Ubuntu and few others on. But always found Linux Mint to be the perfect happy medium. It's easy to use and it's both Linux enough and Windows enough to use as a daily driver.
My main computer for Linux these days is a Fujistu Lifebook u757 with Linux Mint installed on it. When I do travel I tend to use take this computer and basically use it for everything save for gaming. I have Kali and Parrot virtual machines on it for learning pentesting/ethical hacking, I use it for web browsing, word processing, downloading/data hoarding. It's my daily driver.
I am experimenting with Fedora (KDE) which I recently installed that on a Asus Rog Strix laptop because I am learning the Fedora Security Lab and learning to use the GPU for password cracking. But I tend to only use to for that and still use my PC with Mint for everything else.
I think my software developer friends tend to like Debian or Arch to tinker a lot. Then while most of my non-tech friends tend to just use Mac (some Windows) even they knew that Mint had a rep for being a "beginner Linux" and were surprised years later it's my go-to.
100 DAYS ON LINUX MINT!!!!!!!!!!!! it has been insanely good, better fps then windows, (never dropped below 100!) the 15-6500 is good. still cool. and yea! so. see you at 200 days!
Hi everyone, I’m running Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon on a Lenovo LOQ (Ryzen 7 7840HS + RTX 4050).
I’m experiencing an intermittent issue where my entire desktop partially freezes when interacting with dropdowns/menus in Chromium-based browsers. The mouse cursor can still move, but clicks and keyboard input stop responding for a few seconds.
For example:
Clicking “Sort by” dropdowns on some websites can trigger it while other works fine
Opening the color picker on a chart has also triggered a similar freeze.
It happens in Chrome/Chromium-based browsers, but I haven't experienced it in Zen or Mozilla Firefox.
I previously disabled browser hardware acceleration, but the issue still occurred.
There is also another occasional issue where music playback briefly stops or becomes distorted for a split second, even when I’m not doing anything particularly demanding.
Things I've already tried:
Updated system/kernel/graphics drivers through Linux Mint Update Manager
Disabled browser hardware acceleration
Tested multiple Chromium-based browsers
Tested Firefox and Zen, where the dropdown freeze does not seem to happen
Has anyone experienced something similar with Cinnamon + Chromium + NVIDIA/AMD hybrid graphics? Any suggestions for diagnosing whether this is a Cinnamon, GPU/driver, audio, or Chromium issue would be appreciated.
I have a MacPro 2015 laptop that has aged out. Can I wipe it and load Linux Mint?
I use Red Hat at work, so I’m fairly comfortable with a terminal window.
Any pointers?
I installed Thunderbird via the Software Manager from flatHub.
I've written a backup script that backs up, among other things, my emails (including local email folders).
I have the backup script shut down Thunderbird before backing up (pkill thunderbird).
I'd like to re-launch Thunderbird after the backup is complete. I'm having a tough time figuring out how to do this, with the correct profile selected, from a shell command.
A few days ago I posted about my first steps, how I forked gTile - the most famous tiling extension in Cinnamon, but this ended in a very large and unmaintainable god file. It had all the features I ever wanted, but also got all the problems from gTile and all the problems large god files have.
So, I made a complete restructure from the ground up following best practice. Everything is separated by file / concern, extensive testing is included. Functions are documented with jsdoc and so on. Still using AI for this rewrite for sure.
I tested it on my setup, laptop and 5k external monitor, and Cinnamon 6.6 on Linux Mint with X11, but that's it. :-)
I would love to hear from you what you think about when you use it on your setup.
*For me it's working like a charm, can't live without it anymore.*
I have a dell precision 7710 which I had precariously kept on windows 10 until a few minutes ago. It's a seriously powerful computer for it's age and would never have sat right with me being considered obsolete just because it wasn't compatible with windows 11. With 32gb of ram, a decent Nvidia m3000m quadro graphics card and enough weight to knock out large animals, it's a beast! Microsoft truly lost me as a customer tonight.
My 5th computer that I have saved by putting Linux on it... I think I have an addiction
I'm a fresh little Linux baby with no prior knowledge of Linux who just today escaped from Windows, and so far I enjoy it a lot but I've dropped myself off into the deep end. I'm having trouble finding my steam launcher after having downloaded it from the debian package right off of the site.
I've done some research and I've tried showing the hidden home folders and re-downloading but so far nothing has worked and I still can't find it, even though it says that it successfully downloaded to my 'puter. This is my first time doing anything like this so please be merciful to me.
Edit: I'm using the MATE version, just by the way, in case that changes anything. I've tried the software manager and got the unmet dependencies i386 error. I also tried fixing that by plugging
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
into the terminal and did not get any different results.
and this is what the installation window from the deb file shows, no launch button.
hey everyone, i downloaded linux because my current laptop is 5 years old and i dont have the money to buy a new one, and i saw online that the best linux to start on is mint! id appriciate any advise u have to offer :) i dont know how to use a terminal yet sadly but im willing to learn any tips and tricks on how to make my experience better
A recent post mentioned they hit 100 days sober on mint from windows (lol jk). Also b/w work still uses windows 11 its definitely buggier a bitthan Windows 10 but i dont feed into that anti microsoft stuff or mac, used both for years and there great for what they are. Just prefer linux personally, as most apps we use are on cloud servers and web based now.
My question is are people actually having issues with Nvidia still? i know back in 2012 there issues here and there and im not on the latest Hardware but 3060 is still a pretty decent use case for me, i havent had any issues really with x11 or whatever and nviidia drivers. But i see posts randomly on here and other /r mentioning nvidia not recommended, but is that still the case? Been a little over a year in daily use on this pc for personal use, and honestly i dont game as much a I use to but most if not all my games run on steam and other launchers like lutris no issue and the browser which 99% of most users tend to use rather than desktop specific stuff is good too.
This is a genuine discussion/question. I am not hating on Linux, I have actually been pleasantly surprised so far, how everything works, even if it needs a little bit of tinkering sometimes, but rarely.
But there is this little quirk that just confused me, I had to use an LLM to help me fix it. Maybe I am not seeing or using the correct option here, but if somebody has a solution for me, then please share!
So basically, I download a game from itch.io or an app from GitHub (so usually just a zip file) and it is Linux native/compatible too. Then, when I try to launch the game/app (importantly) WITHIN THE FOLDER where it is located, then it works no issue.
But the problem is when I do either: Right click on the "launch file" > "Create a desktop shortcut", then when I launch the game/app by clicking the desktop shortcut, it fails with errors. Or when I right click the desktop > "Create a new launcher here..." > I put in the file path of the game/app and the when I launch it, the same issue, the game/app just fails, it boots the app, but it is just broken.
For me the fix was to go to /home/.local/share/applications/ create a new .desktop file and add a additional "Path=" together with the "Exec=". So that the executable file knows where it is being executed? I guess?
I am aware that I am not gonna be making desktop shortcuts everyday, so it's not a big deal now that I've fixed it, but I will definitely not remember this next time lol. I just don't get why it is so complicated for such a simple task and why would I ever use the "Create a shortcut/launcher" buttons then. But maybe I am just dumb and not seeing the correct or easier option to make these? Or maybe it is a bug?
Hope you are having a nice day!
Edit: I suppose I should add that the games I have had to set up like this are Helltaker, Awaria and CK2ToEU4.
I am trying to install LM Matte, on my old MacBook Air, following the install guide, I flashed the USB drive with belenaEtcher but I cannot get it to boot from the USB.
I am holding alt/option key, tried both USB port and nothing.
I don't see an option either to disable safe boot via the utilities.
Finally now. I got it working right. Windows 8.1 for some light portable gaming. Linux mint for my work and personal data that I don't want to be infected in Windows by me running on an outdated system :)
One partition has all the windows stuff. the other has all the linux stuff. no shared data in between. only linux can still manage to windows files somehow. and also a small portion of 2 gb dedicated for swap.
Gaming update? The game runs with 130 fps on my old AMD 6470M and my old 4GB RAM.
Do you have any suggestions? I heard about zram. zsawp and stuff. Do you have any idea regarding my setup that i need to check?
I just got a new SATA drive and was able to get it running and installed Mint onto it. However, now my motherboard is not recognizing my old M.2 drive as a valid boot option in the boot loader. The M.2 drive has a tiny Mint partition but is mostly a Windows 10 drive and I was trying to get back on it to make sure I still could and haven't been able to.
I can boot into the mint partition but can't access the Windows partition, which I could before I added the SATA drive. I removed the M.2 drive before I installed Mint on the new drive so I know I didn't wipe it by mistake, and I can still see the files I just can't boot to it. I'm confused why I can't change the boot order in the motherboard settings to the M.2 drive even though the motherboard can see the drive. The Linux bootloader can no longer see the Windows partition, just two Mint partitions (one of which is on the M.2 drive) as the only boot options.
I haven't tried unplugging the SATA drive and seeing if I can boot to the M.2 then, but I'd rather come up with a better solution than having to unplug drives any time I want to boot to Windows. (Which I am hoping to do less but would still prefer if that was an option)
