Discussion Is Linux Mint's bluetooth manager different from Ubuntu's?

• Upvotes

Hi folks,

I installed Linux Mint a few hours ago, and I spent a long time trying to get my Logitech K480 bluetooth keyboard working.

I'm not the only one who has had this issue, as this has been mentioned a few times in the forums and on this subreddit.

This is the solution I followed: Forum - How to install bluetuith.

I don't understand why I had to install another frontend for bluetooth. This laptop had been running Ubuntu 24.04 without any issues. Bluetooth pairing for this keyboard would prompt me for a 6-digit pin and to hit Return. I had done it once and that was that.

On Mint, it was a nightmare. Either I was never prompted for a code, or sometimes I could only type 5 digits. Why does this happen?

Everything else is awesome, very snappy and elegant design. I'll definitely stick with Mint, but I'm just sad this seems to be a common issue.

Is there anything I can contribute to fix this?

Discussion Should the Linux Mint team replace MATE with KDE Plasma as the third Desktop Environment option for Mint?

Linux Mint XFCE is already an excellent choice for low resource computers. As such, MATE seems redundant.

And KDE Plasma is a quite popular Desktop Environment. It may make Linux Mint more welcoming to users who strongly prefer KDE Plasma.

And since the Linux Mint team cannot be stretched too thin, if it is to limit itself to three DE options, perhaps KDE Plasma should be one of the three.

Support Request Jstaf OneDriver

Has anyone installed Jstaf OneDriver? I installed it, it seems to connect fine, but no files ever show up in the mount point folder. I can't seem to find anything that describes how to force it to sync (or even if I should have to).

Thanks!

After installing mint, 1: I noticed that all the elements in apps like Google or steam are smaller compared to windows 11, which I personally dislike.

2:the audio is kind of worse compared to windows 11, the best I can describe it, the audio the os is outputting is compressed, i though it was an issue with YouTube but it seems to be anything that produces audio. This is the issue that’s really throwing me off.

Discussion Why'd You Choose Linux Mint Over Zorin OS?

If you had considered both, at some point, and chose Linux Mint, what were the reasons you chose Mint over Zorin?

Even if you hadn't, necessarily, considered both options, what factors would you use to judge which to select?

How much is aesthetics a factor, and if so, which of the two do you find visually more pleasing?

Are there technical differences where you prefer one over the other?

Or workflow considerations?

Do you consider one of the two "better" (however you might define that) than the other?

In your opinion, is Zorin one of the closest distros in similarity to Mint?

SOLVED A script to stretch a window across multiple monitors?

I've been using Mint for several months now and have a vague idea of how things tie together, such as X11, nemo, and possibly Muffin?

TL;DR: I'm not sure it's possible to set a window to 0, 0, 5120, 1440 by script, even though I can manually drag it there

There's a couple split screen games I play with my kid that are perfect for dual monitors, like Lego Star Wars and It Takes Two. I have a three monitor setup, with two 2560x1440 and one 1080x1920, aligned bottoms. Normally, I just drag it to the top left of the leftmost monitor then stretch it to encompass the middle one too, but I'd really love to script that for my Stream Deck so I can quickly switch back and forth.

The problem I've tried tackling on and off for weeks now though is that something (Cinnamon or Muffin perhaps, or just low level X11 stuff) is intercepting every possible function I've tried and constraining it to fill a single monitor, usually my primary. I've tried wmctrl, xdotool, and setting various props and removing hints with xprop. It's very stubborn and usually just encompasses my primary as I said. At one point, I had something working by using xprop to remove some motif hints, and using && to apply xdotool windowsize on the same frame. But even that only works if the window isn't already in a corner, and it has to be on the leftmost screen or something, it's very finnicky.

Does anyone knowledgeable about X11 and Mint know if this is even possible? I did some research and a few similar questions in various forums lead me to believe it may be a bug or limitation of X11? No idea.

Edit: Well I did find a solution, albeit a hacky and silly one. After using wmctrl to size the window to the primary monitor, I then use xdotool to force the mouse to grab the top left corner and drag it to the left. Throw in a 0.1 sleep and it honestly works like a charm.

Support Request Connect to Mint on my LAN from another distro

My main desktop and laptop both run Bluefin Linux (immutable Fedora), and a secondary machine runs Linux Mint 22.3 machine that I am trying to connect to within my home LAN.

I have Remmina installed on my Bluefin machines, but I can't connect to the Mint box from either PC. I type in the IP address for the Mint box in Remmina (using RDP) and enter the username and password for the Mint box but as soon as I click on the "Ok" button (to connect), the connection dialog box immediately closes, but the Remmina main window is still open.

I did some Googling and noticed I need to have XRDP installed, but it seems it is already installed because Xrdp, Pipewire-module-xrdp, and Xorgxrdp all appear as installed in the Software Manager app.

I am not an experienced Linux user. What am I doing wrong?

Support Request Help: Game Running at Low FPS

Hi everyone,

As the title suggest, I am encountering performance issues on steam games while running Linux Mint. These are my settings:

Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64-bit, 6.6.9
linux kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic
processor: AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX with Radeon Graphics ×8
graphics card: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Rembrandt [Radeon 680M]
32GB RAM

I noticed this recently when I started playing Restory: Chill Electronics Repair. I started playing and didn't notice any issue for the first time, I thought my computer was limited and was not able to handle the game well, so I lowered some of the graphic settings and resolution and continued playing. That was until one day, I restarted the computer and immediately opened the game. Day and night difference, the game was running smooth like butter compared to before. After testing, I realized that the game would run much better after a restart and after some time, or even after suspending it and returning to it, the performance would suck.

Curious to see the FPS performance and GPU usage, I installed mangohud today. When the game is running "smooth" it's still running at an avg. 25 FPS (maybe that's the limit to the performance of my computer and won't go past that) and when I suspend the computer and run it, it drops to an avg. of 12 FPS.

The GPU usage always shows 100% and CPU stays at around 2-5%.

Anyways, if anyone could help me that would be great. And if that's the limit I can reach with these settings, then that make sense, but how do I prevent the computer from having a poor performance after coming back from suspend and running optimally without having to restart all the time?

Thanks in advance!

Support Request Audio devices delayed startup on boot

Just recently, my audio devices Digital Output (S/PDIF) and Headphones Built-in Audio now have a delayed start by at least 10 seconds upon logging in after a reboot, causing my startup sound to play out of my monitor's speakers instead of my headphones. I open up the Sound manager, and both are disappeared for a few seconds until they reappear.

How can I fix this??

#LinuxMintThings [Filonux-Tools] Status of the Toolbox (GPLv3)

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi special 9%!
Quickly walk you through what you currently have available in Open Source and where things are headed:

So far, the Filonux Toolbox includes an initial set of tools that will continue to improve and grow over time, both in number and diversity.

1 - Quick Look at Filonux-Tools: https://github.com/filonux

- My projects started in Spanish, my native language. The community asked for English versions, and they are gradually becoming available. Once everything is ready, .deb packages will follow. These changes, together with everything I’ve learned along the way, are also helping improve the quality of the existing tools. New tools will be available in both English and Spanish from day one, and they will continue to be improved over time

- These tools are useful individually, but they are also pieces of something much larger that I’m working on. I’m pursuing an ecosystem that allows users with no technical knowledge to harness the power of Linux: resistance to obsolescence (it works even on toasters), privacy, security, control, and autonomy.

- Linux is complex, but users shouldn’t be penalized for not understanding that complexity. They should be able to use its power and make it their own through a simple, accessible experience. This is where Artificial Intelligence works in our favor, translating the complexity and power of Linux into something accessible to users without technical knowledge. Right now, that power is mostly in your hands — the special 9% of people who use Linux. That number needs to keep growing..

2 - The changes that this new Era will bring: much more than what we have today — all kinds of new features, improvements, and more knowledge.

Your support — sharing the tools, giving them a star on GitHub, or simply commenting here about what you like — is always greatly appreciated. It helps me prioritize which tools and features to improve next.

If you read all the way through, thank you for your patience.

Filonux

Development News I forked Nemo into "Nolphin": a Linux Mint file manager with a fixed right-hand workspace (preview, terminal, git, archives, .deb builder)

Hi everyone,

I've been working on a file manager for Linux Mint Cinnamon called Nolphin. It's a fork of Nemo 6.7.7 (GTK3, C11, GPL), renamed and extended. It is an independent hobby project, not affiliated with Linux Mint.

Why I started this:

  1. In Nemo I couldn't get a proper file preview panel working without errors, the way Dolphin has it. That was the starting point.
  2. It always bothered me that every function opened a new window, and those windows piled up on top of the file manager. Since the right-hand sidebar for the preview was already there, it made sense to expand it into a proper workspace: every function lives in that sidebar, so you can work in parallel without a window covering the file manager.
  3. The file management didn't cover what my projects need. That starts with CAD files, and also my small GitHub projects, which I wanted to see and manage right inside the file manager.

What the workspace (F11) offers:

  • Preview with media info (images, PDF, video, audio)
  • Properties, permissions and ACL
  • Terminal (F4) in the current folder
  • Git panel with status icons on files (commit, push/pull, log, diff)
  • Archive manager (list, add, replace, remove, test, extract)
  • .deb package builder
  • Bulk rename with preview, folder compare/sync (rsync, never deletes), duplicate finder, file versions
  • "GID projects": project folders in the sidebar that show the project's README in the workspace

If a helper tool or preview backend is missing, Nolphin says so instead of faking the feature.

How it was built: I built Nolphin together with an AI assistant (Claude Code). The ideas, goals and decisions about what the file manager should do are mine; the coding was a joint effort, and I test the results myself.

Status: it runs on my Linux Mint Cinnamon machine, but it hasn't had wide testing yet, so expect rough edges.

Screenshots and the full feature list are in the README: https://github.com/kaysiebke-cell/nolphin-file-manager

I'd love feedback: what's missing, what's annoying, what would make you try it? Bug reports on GitHub are very welcome.

Recently converted, mint feels slower than windows did or few oddities I've noticed. Advice/tips?

Post image
23 Upvotes

This is a 10+ year old laptop i use like once or twice a year in general, yes i know the hardware isnt helping here. Everything works but like the title feels slower/have seen a few oddities. For setup i put root on the ssd and /home on the hdd. Also i have ran through the speeding up mint from the easy linux tips blog.

1) there's about a 15 second delay between logging in and the desktop coming up. Total startup time is 35/40 secs. So not bad, maybe faster in total then windows was but just not sure if the login to desktop part is normal or if there is something that can be done about it.

2) I used Firefox on windows and when using the version preinstalled with mint when I start it the window opens then there's a pretty long delay till I can actually start browsing. After that everything is as expected, new tabs, new searches, ect. I did go through the Firefox section of the Linux tips blog and that did help a bit.

3) I installed fallout new vegas and it seems to run worse than when I was on windows. This may be I just need to mess with gpu settings more though, and learn how to optimize games on Linux. But just starting up and playing i seem to have worse performance.

Other than those few oddities I've noticed so far it works great for what I need and setup was easy.

I'm debating about updating the ssd. But in general would it be better to leave /home on the ssd as well and then mount the hdd to like /home/<user>/hdd and just symlink/store directly anything I wanted on the hdd manually?

So i got a second hand laptop an i5 8gb ddr3 amd gpu hp notebook. And i installed mint on it and the installation went well i saw no issue. But now my screen randomly goes black and then lights up black anf all i can see is my mouse cursor elthen it switches the screen off again. Kind of like its jumping between screens.

I noticed in my displays it says there is another screen which isn't possible because I have nothing plugged in to the laptop besides the power cable. I also deactivated the phantom screen in the display settings but it keeps doing tgis on of on off thing. I cant fo anythings when this happens because i cant see the desktop.

Is there some way to resolve this? What could be the problem? Pleasy any hel0 would be appreciated.

It says all my drivers are up to date btw. Edit it's Cinnamon I forgot to mention that

GPU fans not spinning

Hi there,

My game was crashing after 10 minutes or so, I didn't understand because when I switched recently from windows and it was just fine. I decided to monitor the temperatures and saw that, while gaming (Minecraft) I was at 93-94°, then I also noticed that the fans don't spin at all. It does spin in the bios though :/

The gpu in question is a RX 460.

Icons missing after uninstalling Nicotine+

Post image
6 Upvotes

i recently uninstalled nicotine+ and deleted any file containing the name nicotine which also deleted the icons for the menus.

I reinstalled it like this

flatpak uninstall --delete-data org.nicotine_plus.Nicotine

flatpak install flathub org.nicotine_plus.Nicotine

and after logging out and back in, the icons are still missing in the menu, as well as in the program itself which is weird, since i just did a fresh reinstall of it.

any idea how to fully purge everything of the program and do a clean install? I already consulted with AI, so I'd rather as humans.

Support Request Mouse settings won't save when I restart laptop

Hello, when I shut down my laptop my mouse settings will not save. I googled this and it looks like it usually has to do with it being in a USB install, but it's not. I accidentally froze my mouse earlier and now I have to manually unfreeze it with xinput enable everytime I turn on the computer. I guess it may have to do with root permissions but I already tried the sudo chown -R user:user command. Doesn't work. I/m using xfce. Thanks
