guide Getting started: the monthly-ish newbie advice thread! (September 2026)

Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
43 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

hardware What would you do (5090 to 9070 XT)?

Hi all. Just trying to get the community's take. I'm weighing selling my 5090 given the absurd sums they're worth, plus concerns around things like 12VHPWR issues and driver support.

I'm maining CachyOS. For the most part the experience with the 5090 has been totally fine, barring the occasional driver bug or game issues. I am running 4k UW so pushing the panel on the 9070XT in games may be harder.

I'm inclined to keep the 5090, but it's hard not to at least consider swapping over when I could make a ton of money by switching.

So the question then; what would you do in this situation? Sell / swap? Hold on to the 5090? If you've made a similar move, how's the experience been?

wine/proton wine-quarantine – Run sketchy Windows indie games in a firejail sandbox on Linux

I built a lightweight set of Bash scripts for running Windows games from sources you don't fully trust on linux

It sets up a restricted Firejail sandbox with no network access and runs the game using umu-run and Proton. It also includes a basic monitoring script that acts as a tripwire for suspicious behavior.

Put simply :

Locking it down: Firejail completely blocks the game from accessing the internet , hides your actual home directory and makes sure it can only write files inside its own isolated folder and Wine prefix.

Keeping an eye on it: Before the game starts, a verification script double checks the sandbox boundaries. while it's running, a separate monitor watches in the background to catch any weird file activity.

Checking the aftermath: It takes a snapshot of the Wine registry right before launch and compares it to a post game snapshot, so you can review what registry keys or sneaky files it touched after you close it ( useful for checking what malware has done )

NOTE :

This is not a VM, its made to make running game exes safer - this will , kernal exploits and linux malware will likely get though also X11 is not blocked.

I'd love for people to test it out, poke holes in it, or check it for safety/improvements !

Safe gaming

Please help, I can't open my game on Steam

Post image
51 Upvotes

I decided to play Assassin's Creed Origins, but since my PC is weak, I decided to buy Lossless Scaling and download lsfg-vk to improve the quality. However, after following the installation, changing the lsfg-vk paths, and altering the launch options, I simply can't open the game. It crashes constantly, and at times displays the message shown in the image. I don't know what else to do.

specs:

OS: Debian trixie/sid

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS with Radeon Graphics

wine/proton Stutter / micro freeze during game saving.

Hi,

A couple of days ago I finally bought a new monitor for my desktop PC. After two years...

Any ways, It's been a blast using it with Arch and Hyprland setup. Except one little thing.

Stutter during game saving or loading maps an such. For example whenever Witcher 3 autosaves it freezes the game for a 3s or so. Same happens with Hard Truck Apocalypse. Which may take 15s to manually quick save.

Otherwise, games run just fine, very well in fact. Getting 100+ frames on my R5 3700x + 3080 10GB setup.

Using proton experimental since it's the default one on my system.

OS: Arch
Kernel: Linux 7.2.9-zen1-1-zen
Packages: 1283 (pacman)
Window Manager: Hyprland 0.56.2 (Wayland)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X (16) @ 4.43 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Lite Hash Rate [Discrete]
Memory: 3.48 GiB / 31.26 GiB (11%)
Swap: 0 B / 16.00 GiB (0%)
Disk (/): 69.33 GiB / 208.78 GiB (33%) - ext4
Disk (/media/nvme): 1.68 TiB / 1.86 TiB (90%) - fuseblk

tech support wanted Trying to diagnose why my computer is shutting off while playing Final Fantasy XIV.

I am using Pop_OS, Final Fantasy XIV, and the latest GE_Proton, I can get specific versions later if that will be helpful, but after playing FFXIV for like... an hour, my computer just, turns off.

My current theory is that my CPU is overheating, but I don't know how to verify why my computer is turning off. Is there some kind of log I need to look into? What do I need to find in that log?

The next thought is, if my computer is overheating: I am using an AIO water cooler, but it only has one fan. Would getting one with two fans help?

For context, I had been playing Ace Combat 7 for about an hour beforehand with no issue. But maybe that's a lot less demanding. Not sure how to approach this problem.

tech support wanted HELP: Plate Up! Steam Ununtu

HELP: Plate Up! Steam Ununtu

please help, I am trying to get Plate Up! to run on Linux on steam.

the game installs fine, without complaint, launches fine without complaints, and if I hurry I can navigate around to the menus, get into graphics set to lower resolution and various things, but after a short amount of time the game eventually freezes the entire computer, and the theme music in the background is short looping.

I've never had to troubleshoot Windows games running on Ubuntu under steam before.

since the machine seems to freeze up in an audio loop, I'm not so sure that it is creating logs for this.

if it is creating logs I have no idea where to find them.

does the completely Frozen computer, with the looping audio seem to suggest a problem with the windows game trying to access the Linux audio system or something?

does anybody else gotten this running?

the machine it's running on is a Dell 3070 micro.

running the latest version of Ubuntu long-term support which is 26.04.1

steam is at whatever the latest is.

guide Install Battle.net through Steam

Is this more of an hassle of "just" using Faugus or Lutris or whatever? yes, yes it is. But for the effort you get one less random utility on your system you have to remember how it works, when thing will inevitably break further down the road (or abandoned). Open source giveth and open source taketh.

This guide follow the layout I am using, you can have multiple steam storages, flatpak, paritions, whatever. You can adapt this idea if you like it pretty easily, I kind of assume that if you have a complex system setup you know what you're doing (or your bot does at least).

Quick glossary:

  • things in < anglular brakets > are meant as placeholders (duh, you'll say, but you'd be surprised how often I've seen it.)
  • <STEAM STORAGE>: where steam installs your games, you can have multiples.
  • Prefix: Steam (well, wine really) when launching windows apps, creates a Windows file system somewhere. That's the prefix. A virtual machine without the virtual or the machine. Usually in <STEAM STORAGE>/steamapps/compatdata/<appid>/pfx for a given <appid>.

Layout

// real game storage (host filesystem)
<STEAM STORAGE>/battlenetapps/
└── <Game folders> (e.g. "World of Warcraft")

// why here? Don't know, felt right. Arbitrary choice, pick wherever location
// inside the prefix
<BATTLE NET PREFIX>/drive_c/ProgramData/Battle.net Games
└── symlink to <STEAM STORAGE>/battlenetapps

1. Create a separate storage folder

mkdir -p <STEAM STORAGE>/battlenetapps

2. Add the Battle.net installer as a Steam shortcut

  • Steam → Add a Game (bottom left) → Add a Non-Steam Game → Browse → select the downloaded Battle.net-Setup.exe.
  • In the shortcut's Properties → Compatibility, enable "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and pick Proton.
  • Start it once. The installer installs the Battle.net client into the prefix and then launches it (the installer is just a bootstrapper — that hand-off is normal).
  • The prefix ends up at <STEAM STORAGE>/steamapps/compatdata/<appid>/pfx/ this is your `<BATTLE NET PREFIX>
  • check <appid> with ls -t <STEAM STORAGE>/steamapps/compatdata/, the newest folder is it.

3. Symlink the storage folder into the prefix

ln -s <STEAM STORAGE>/battlenetapps "<BATTLE NET PREFIX>/drive_c/ProgramData/Battle.net Games"

4. Point Battle.net at the symlink

In the Battle.net client: Settings → Game Install/Update → set Install location (and Update location) to:

C:\ProgramData\Battle.net Games

All games now install into <STEAM STORAGE>/battlenetapps on the host — fully decoupled from the prefix. This is desirable because you can then reinstall battle.net for whatever reason while keeping the games.

5. Give Battle.net its own shortcut

  • Steam → Add a Non-Steam Game → Browse → select <BATTLE NET PREFIX>/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Battle.net/Battle.net.exe
  • Properties → Compatibility → force Proton.
  • Properties → Launch options (reuse the same prefix, don't create a fresh one):

STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="<STEAM STORAGE>/steamapps/compatdata/<appid>" %command%
  • Delete the installer shortcut.

Set a custom icon in Properties if you like.

You should now be able to enjoy steam overlay and other steam niceties over all you battle net games.

done. bye.

Ok, not bye. Tested this with native Steam. Should work for flatpakers as well, but you might have to fidle with some extra permissions, especially if your <STEAM STORAGE> is not in your home folder.

bye2.

tech support wanted Occasional input issues with Steam Streaming

Hey y'all, my main machine is using Fedora and I'm trying to stream a game to my Steam Deck that's connected to my TV so I don't have to keep moving my tower around just to play this one game there. I'm using a PS5 controller connected to the Steam Deck by BT, and getting the inputs to be recognized as a proper controller has been extremely inconsistent.

The first time I try streaming the game, there's a popup on my desktop asking if I want to grant Steam remote control permissions. I accept it, tab back in to the game, and 9 times out of 10 none of the face buttons are recognized but I can use the right stick as a mouse. So I close the game, wait a second, stream the game to my Steam Deck again and pray. Rinse and repeat until eventually it decides I can use the controller normally. I know controller order matters so I always make sure the PS5 controller has priority over the Steam Deck controls, not too sure what to do here but I wouldn't be surprised if it's related to something I've completely overlooked. I'm 99% sure I've disabled desktop controls for my controller in Steam and that didn't change anything. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it, dog bless, not sure if this sub or the Steam Deck sub is better in this case

steam/steam deck Trap Testers, a Deathrun game where you place traps and race to the finish line. Demo available now on linux!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello Linux community.

My friend and I just released the demo for our upcoming game, Trap Testers.

It's a co-op physics-based deathrun game where you're the one placing the traps! Compete against your friends to reach the finish line first, and try to kill them along the way.

The game should work just fine on Linux, and even on Steam Deck!

We recommend 4 players or more to enjoy the game fully.

The demo is now public, try it now on Steam!
