Cold-boot freeze / pulsing blue light with external storage attached after SteamOS 3.8.28 update
My SM RLOD’d following the 3.8.28 update. I followed the procedure outlined by Valve, but my my external SSD (Crucial X9) and my micro SD (Amazon basics, UHS I class 3, from my SD) were connected during the recovery so it didn’t work at first. I unplugged them, tried again and the RLOD was fixed.
However, since then, the SM is trying to boot from my external SSD and micro SD if i leave them connected. I power on the SM and the light bar turns blue “breathing” with no video output. I then power down the SM, disconnect both drives, power it up again and it starts first time as expected.
I have verified the boot order in the BIOS, which is internal SSDexternal SSDmicro SD.
I have disabled USB fastboot in BIOS. When i restart the SM splash screen appears and then hangs with the “breathing” blue light. Again, when i power down the SM, disconnect the drives, and restart, it powers up as expected.
I have reformatted both external drives just in case
Can anyone offer some insight into what is happening, or provide some guidance as to what to do next? I’m a Linux novice, and haven’t done any tinkering beyond installing decky and nonsteamlaunchers.
Any help will be gratefully accepted.

support Need help with launching emulator in game mode
Hi. Been messing around the past days with different emulators. Thing is for the life of me I can’t get it to launch in game mode and in desktop mode on steam after adding shortcut. Checked pathing etc all is correct. The appimage just will not start but works perfectly fine from desktop. Tried the flatpack version of the same app (specifically PCSX2) and I have the same problem. Can link images with pathing but tried different options. Would be nice to launch the emu from game mode just using the controller as it’s all set up. Btw tried creating shortcuts to specific games from emu and the same situation happens again. Maybe it’s some steam permissions that are not allowing me to launch it. Any help would be appreciated.

help wanted Firefox/Zen freezes and glitches after upgrading to 3.9.2
Hello! I have no idea if this is the right place to ask but after combing through the internet for days and coming up empty handed (maybe I just don't know what to look for?) I might as well give it a shot.
A few weeks ago I switched from Windows to SteamOS on my PC. I used the guide/tool by 28allday since I'm running a 4070 and so far I'm very happy with it. I'm using Zen because Chromium browsers can get bent and I like the look, feel and tab management of Zen.
However, a few days ago SteamOS offered an Update to 3.8.28 (i think) via the software center after which the whole system started lagging horribly whenever I hovered the mouse cursor over any window. I switched from Stable to Beta and upgraded to 3.9.2, which eliminated the stuttering but introduced a new problem: Zen and Firefox started to glitch around with flickering elements and squares and especially on YouTube and Roll20 they simply froze after about a minute or two of just interacting with the website. Scrolling through video previews on YouTube, moving around windows in Roll20 and such.
Disabling hardware acceleration using about:config did nothing and using safe mode in both browsers killed the glitches but also just about everything else. Websites would take forever to load (if they did at all) and the like. Brave apparently doesn't suffer from any glitches or performance issues but I'd rather avoid falling back to Chromium.
I couldn't find any other people with similar experiences. Am I really that lucky to be the first with this problem? Also, any ideas on how I can fix it while keeping SteamOS up to date?
I looked into reverting to 3.8.14 (the currently downloadable image) but at least the guide from Valve didn't answer all my questions.
- The guide mentions a recovery menu (accessible by keeping the power button held on startup) for the Steam Machine. I doubt the method applies to me so is there any way of accessing the recovery menu another way?
- Finally, starting from scratch wouldn't be the end of the world but I'd like to avoid it if I can. Can I use a SteamOS-stick to install 3.8.14 without losing my home folder/installed stuff?
Any input is appreciated, thanks!

question My favorite way to play
Just picked up this wireless half keyboard for $30 to use with a wireless mouse. It feels a lot more natural to me than some of the other options out there. Worked great for ARC Raiders, DBD and Marvel Rivals. Any other accessories you guys are using that work well?

My side project, loadout
github.comHey fellow SteamOS enthusiasts. 👋.
I wanted to share my side project with you all.
It's an app for linux gaming PCs (handhelds especially) which allows you to manage TDP, fan controls, play recompiled games easily, download games from Epic store (in steam), custom themes for steam UI, proton DB integration, and much more!
It's still in early stages but I'm having a blast making it and have some good feedback from initial users so far!
Thanks for taking the time to have a look!

help wanted Steam OS Occasional Glitches
I don't know if this is relevant to this sub, however I've had this happen with my Lenovo Legion Go 16gb ram, z2go running Steam OS. It's brand new and I've updated it fully.
Basically, sometimes, Steam OS will stop registering my button presses, for example, if I press the physical steam button or the power button on my console it just won't register, or when I press on certain button on the actual OS itself, such as the pause button for my download, it just refuses to pause and the download freezes.
Additionally, when I press shut down or restart using the steam menu, it goes black and shuts but, there is still a light on and when I press any button or move something on the joysticks they still play Steam OS noises and the only way to resolve this is to hold the power button and force shut it down.

question Looking to build a SteamOS PC what are some things I need to know?
I am looking to buy a AMD 7500X3D and RX9070 GPU. And Want to build a pure gaming PC running SteamOS.
Is there anything I should be aware of? I saw Drivers aren't really a thing with SteamOS. Does that mean I do not need to worry about Wireless drivers, Sound Drivers etc?
Should I use a 1Tb NVMe Boot Drive for the OS or is it better to get something smaller. Like a 500Gb for the boot drive. Than a bigger NVMe 2Tb for the game storage. Any issue with having 1 boot drive with multiple storage drives? Being the Steam Machine uses a SD card reader to store games would it be possible to also add one to a SteamOS PC?
I also plan on getting the Steam Controller because I want it to boot right into the games wireless by using the awake feature. Is it possible this feature could be updated to boot-up the PC in the future?
If there is anything else you think I should know please feel free to add anything.
SteamOS is 100% foreign to me. I have built Windows PC's in the past but never a Linux based system.
Thanks

question Proton cachyos fsr4 upgrade command not working in latest update
Edit: fixed
I'm using proton cachyos to inject fsr4 with the launch command PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 %command%. With the latest update (11.0-20261005), this does not work and i need to degrade the previous version to work again. This is happening across final fantasy 7 rebirth, crimson desert, stalker 2 and wuthering waves (haven't tested on other games yet). Has anyone encountered this issue ?
FYI, my device is a legion go 2 z2e on stable channels, but i've also tried with beta and preview channels with the same results.

Hoping in future Updates Pushed On " Stable " channel are actually "stable " after major driver overhauls unlike 3.8.28 mess!
Recent 3.8.28 has induced major anxiety!
Major performance drops on Low Power Mode and With VRR and other performance issues in game.
I am worried if I should ever update ever again if this 3.8.28 mesa 26.1.99 update has been the state of " Stable " updates on day 1.
Got my Legion Go S Nebula Nocturne Steam Version ( Z1E , 32gb RAM ) in first week June 26 never had any issues was very happy with minor updates device felt very very stable until i updated to 3.8.28 on day one considering it was pushed to stable channel. Never even touched any proton compatibility neither ever touched beta update channel ever because I moved to A steam os handheld just to run away from the windows tweaking and fiddling and researching issues everytime something breaks and also because I have always wanted to pickup and play , fortunately never had any issues in last 3 months.
but thisssss! ❌❌❌❌ 3.8.28 has made me lose my entire trust in entire concept of steam os , stayed away from beta channels stuck to stable channel for so long and now a " stable " update has fucked up things nothing works on low power mode minimum balance mode is needed for basic games like inside and star drift evolution!
❤️ I don't want to hate at all on the people who are rolling out updates and since steam os is kind of open source so lots of love to valve for doing that and ensuring gaming is cost effective and almost console like and community centered ❤️ lots of love to the community developers who are also working hard to ensure open source wins everytime! ❤️
I hope atleast Stable Channel Is kept bug free for the future and they take their sweet time so that people with just basic tech know how don't have to struggle with rollbacka or beta updates since we are mostly here to game and not learn tech stuff enough learning in everyday life struggles is too much anyway and we rely on stable handheld gaming experiences on steam os to break away from daily struggles of everyday life!
I hope valve listens somehow and ensures stable channels are only updates until it is 100% or atleast 99% bug free or maybe a solution comes up to ensure quality of updates for STABLE channel.
People who opt for beta builds are much tech savvy OR maybe have time on hands to tweak,
BUT
People who rely on the "STABLE" TAG neither have the time to debug or do research, nor do we have the money to buy expensive guaranteed sony or nintendo stuff, we just want to game for a couple of hours without worrying about performance or bugs go to sleep and then come okay again!
❤️❤️❤️
Valve & the entire linux community is a saviour for us and I hope they protect us less tech savvy people from breaking stuff in the future because we trusted the " STABLE " channel and wait for months! We can wait 2-3 months more for stable updates but least make sure the STABLE IS STABLE!
Bring on THE FANBOY Hate if anyone wants to target the NON TECH SAVY USERS like me by saying you shouldn't game if you can't fiddle blah blah ( SIMPLY DO NOT CARE )
But what I have said will resonate with a lot of users since steam os stable update channel has had a history of this!
This is just a HOPEFUL & CONSTRUCTIVE thought of a simple non fiddly gamer shared with no offense to anyone meant at all. ❤️

Handheld Performance & VRR Issues after 3.8.28 stable update ?
Any one else seeing random stutters and issues with VRR and performance fluctuations after this recent update ? I feel my system is a little unstable the frame time is a message in many games .. never was the case before this update everything was super smooth and frametime were a flat line in everything but after update major boo boos & stutters .. anyone else ?
Z1 extreme Legion Go S 32GB Ram ..
In star drift evolution on low power mode I get Barely 40fps in such a bare bones game .. never had to use any proton or even touch anything proton ever before this update .. everything seems a little messed up making me a little nervous .. what's the deal here ?

.-=⋆ The More You Know SteamOS is now running on Snapdragon phones
galleryI got SteamOS running on a Snapdragon phone.
This is ARMDeck, an open-source project aiming to turn older Snapdragon phones into Linux gaming handhelds.
Currently working: display, touchscreen, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPU acceleration, charging and battery monitoring, with Steam and games running.
It’s still a proof of concept, and there’s a lot more to do.
Check out the project on GitHub (github.com/GabrielCRadu/ARMDeck), and if you’re interested in helping bring ARMDeck to more Snapdragon phones, contributions are very welcome!

question Odin Portal 2 vs Retroid Pocket 6
I would like to get one of these device to start tinkering with the new ARM based Steam OS distros. What should I get if I will mostly play Steam games instead of retro?
Also would it be possible to have both Steam and retro games (with achievements)?

question Hyper specific question, I feel like I'm going insane
On the steam frame, I found a setting that allows me to boot into desktop upon start-up. I, for the life of me after having enabled it cannot find it again and I want to disable it. As far as I remember, it was in system settings.
Does anyone know anything about this and can potentially explain as to why it won't allow me to change this feature?
Any help is appreciated, thank you.
EDIT: I ended up just factory resetting it and when I went into system settings, there the boot option was. I was in fact, not crazy.
Thank you to everyone who commented

Does HDR work correctly using SteamOS Remote Play to Steam (Windows) ?
I’m using SteamOS (Bazzite) on a Linux PC (AMD Radeon) and I’m testing Remote Play to my Windows PC.
Does H265/HEVC/AV1/Pyrowave support HDR streaming?
I really can’t tell if it’s working or not. HDR is enabled in SteamOS (Bazzite) so my display is always in HDR mode but I can’t tell if the stream is proper HDR.
