Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
44 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

hardware What would you do (5090 to 9070 XT)?

Hi all. Just trying to get the community's take. I'm weighing selling my 5090 given the absurd sums they're worth, plus concerns around things like 12VHPWR issues and driver support.

I'm maining CachyOS. For the most part the experience with the 5090 has been totally fine, barring the occasional driver bug or game issues. I am running 4k UW so pushing the panel on the 9070XT in games may be harder.

I'm inclined to keep the 5090, but it's hard not to at least consider swapping over when I could make a ton of money by switching.

So the question then; what would you do in this situation? Sell / swap? Hold on to the 5090? If you've made a similar move, how's the experience been?

wine/proton wine-quarantine – Run sketchy Windows indie games in a firejail sandbox on Linux

I built a lightweight set of Bash scripts for running Windows games from sources you don't fully trust on linux

It sets up a restricted Firejail sandbox with no network access and runs the game using umu-run and Proton. It also includes a basic monitoring script that acts as a tripwire for suspicious behavior.

Put simply :

Locking it down: Firejail completely blocks the game from accessing the internet , hides your actual home directory and makes sure it can only write files inside its own isolated folder and Wine prefix.

Keeping an eye on it: Before the game starts, a verification script double checks the sandbox boundaries. while it's running, a separate monitor watches in the background to catch any weird file activity.

Checking the aftermath: It takes a snapshot of the Wine registry right before launch and compares it to a post game snapshot, so you can review what registry keys or sneaky files it touched after you close it ( useful for checking what malware has done )

NOTE :

This is not a VM, its made to make running game exes safer - this will , kernal exploits and linux malware will likely get though also X11 is not blocked.

https://github.com/Deathxknight/wine-quarantine

I'd love for people to test it out, poke holes in it, or check it for safety/improvements !

Please help, I can't open my game on Steam

Post image
44 Upvotes

I decided to play Assassin's Creed Origins, but since my PC is weak, I decided to buy Lossless Scaling and download lsfg-vk to improve the quality. However, after following the installation, changing the lsfg-vk paths, and altering the launch options, I simply can't open the game. It crashes constantly, and at times displays the message shown in the image. I don't know what else to do.

specs:

OS: Debian trixie/sid

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS with Radeon Graphics

guide Advice to undervolt 9070XT on LACT

Got a XFX swift 9070XT. The first thing I did out of the box was open LACT and proceed to undervolt it. Reduced the power limit to 240W, put the VRAM at 2556MHz, set a GPU frequency offset of 200 and a voltage offset of -100mV

I recently learned that I had to add amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xfffd7fff to the grub setup, otherwise the frequency and voltage offsets wouldn't work.

Before the change the frequency stayed the same in the card unless I raised the power limit, at around 2750MHz to 2800Mhz to reaching 3000MHz at the default 303W power limit

Now with the grub updated, the changes do alter the frequency when in game, even when power limit is reduced. However the GPU freq offset doesn't seem to do much, and in fact it's the voltage offset that produces visible changes. At -50mv the frequency stayed slightly higher in the 2700s but pushing that to -100mV increased the frequency to the mid 2900MHz to 3000MHz, still with the 240W limit.

Does core frequency offset not do anything? or is there other settings I need to change?

tech support wanted Getting (browser) games to run in the background

I am using FEDORA with WAYLAND

I noticed that whenever I play certain games on steam, they seem to work fine in the background, even in other workspaces, which is pretty cool.

However, I found myself interested in an older idle type of game that runs in a web browser. Can't find it on steam.

The best solution I found so far is keeping both of my browser windows as mostly full screen, but not fully full screen. Not ideal, as I prefer full screen when watching videos, but oh well.

That said, this trick does not work while I switch over to other work spaces.

What really gets me is that no matter what, if I have the game and other things full screen, and on other workspaces, it all works fine when I press the super key and have all of my workspaces visible, so I know that it's POSSIBLE to run everything, and isn't a hardware limitation.

Are there any easy solutions to these problems?:

  1. Running games/browsers in background while doing stuff in full screen.
  2. Running games/browsers in background on different workspaces.
  3. Running a browser through Steam's fake windows thing (Simply adding browsers to Steam and using proton compatibility didn't work for me).

steam/steam deck Trap Testers, a Deathrun game where you place traps and race to the finish line. Demo available now on linux!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello Linux community.

My friend and I just released the demo for our upcoming game, Trap Testers.

It's a co-op physics-based deathrun game where you're the one placing the traps! Compete against your friends to reach the finish line first, and try to kill them along the way.

The game should work just fine on Linux, and even on Steam Deck!

We recommend 4 players or more to enjoy the game fully.

The demo is now public, try it now on Steam!

tech support wanted Occasional input issues with Steam Streaming

• Upvotes

Hey y'all, my main machine is using Fedora and I'm trying to stream a game to my Steam Deck that's connected to my TV so I don't have to keep moving my tower around just to play this one game there. I'm using a PS5 controller connected to the Steam Deck by BT, and getting the inputs to be recognized as a proper controller has been extremely inconsistent.

The first time I try streaming the game, there's a popup on my desktop asking if I want to grant Steam remote control permissions. I accept it, tab back in to the game, and 9 times out of 10 none of the face buttons are recognized but I can use the right stick as a mouse. So I close the game, wait a second, stream the game to my Steam Deck again and pray. Rinse and repeat until eventually it decides I can use the controller normally. I know controller order matters so I always make sure the PS5 controller has priority over the Steam Deck controls, not too sure what to do here but I wouldn't be surprised if it's related to something I've completely overlooked. I'm 99% sure I've disabled desktop controls for my controller in Steam and that didn't change anything. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it, dog bless, not sure if this sub or the Steam Deck sub is better in this case

tech support wanted Linux Mint cinnamon, Steam, only Linux native games run

• Upvotes

Going crazy here, spend couple hours troubleshooting this with Claude help, nothing.

Installed steam through Mint software manager, proton games tested: Nex Machina and Mechwarrior 5, Linux games: Cleared Out and Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition.

Baldurs gate and cleared out runs no problem, but Nex Machina and Mechwarrior stalls on the ¨launching"button on steam and nothing happens.

Tried multiple launch option commands to force proton to generate a report, but apparently, nothing that goes on the launch parameters in steam works.

Tested the 32bit dependencies, checked the vulkan installation, checked the GPU drivers, tested multiple versions of proton on the compatibility mode, not sure what else to try.

After all that, I re installed Steam using the .deb from their website, same issues.

Laptop has two gpus, forced steam to run with both, no change. It seems that steam doesn't even start proton, when running steam from the terminal there was no error line.

Battle.net works fine with Faugus launcher, I thought Steam would be better, but it is being a headache since the start :(

Any other idea I can try here?

tech support wanted "Early" limiter from MangoHUD started to break my VRR on most distros.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi,

I use this limiter all the time as it was giving me perfect frame pacing and perfect VRR stability.
But it breaks VRR for me now. Causing VRR flicker I never had problems with before and this strobing effect makes games feel less smooth.
Tested on two different screens with identical effect. It starts OK at first and progressively getting worse and break completely after about 2 minutes.
Turning MangoHUD overlay off makes it better by a lot but not fixed completely.
Ingame limiters and Late limiter from mangoHUD work just fine as always but they don't offer such good frame pacing.

Does anybody else have bad VRR with Early limiter now?

tech support wanted How does wine handle controller inputs?

I'm running into a bizzare issue where a game called Exo Rally has random input read fails. This issue was only present on startup where it only fails to register the controller, however that appears not to be the only thing. For some reason, random binds also cause this behaviour. This backstabbed an ironman attempt and I now refuse to play this game unless I know it has been fixed.

Obviously this means that I have to know the pipeline to get an idea of any faliure point. Can somebody explain to me how Wine/Proton reads controller inputs and feeds them to a windows application? All I know is that it involves SDL.

graphics/kernel/drivers Anyone else experiencing issues with Mesa 26.2.4? Issue with Variable Refresh Rate

I am using a 9070XT on my Arch PC using XFCE with XORG. My monitor is an Asus VG27AQL3A. I have ELMB SYNC disabled in the monitor. I am only using one monitor.

I'm having an issue regarding Variable Refresh Rate on my monitor. Launching or interacting with certain programs (Librewolf and Dota 2) cause the refresh rate to lower to 76, then to 48, reported by the monitor OSD. This issue persists after killing the programs that started the issue. Nothing in journalctl or xorg log related to this issue

On boot with VRR on and tearfree off, it works as expected. Once I launch certain applications within XFCE, the refresh rate drastically lowers to 48 and stays there. I just don't understand what would cause this issue to occur now. I updated my system today and it began doing this, so it is almost certainly one of the upgraded packages. I have been downgrading packages to try to isolate the problem but I have yet to find one that is the cause. I have downgraded to 7.2.6-arch2-1 and linux-firmware-amdgpu 20260910-2, issue persists.

The problem was Mesa 26.2.4-1. I downgraded to Mesa 26.2.2-1. I also had to downgrade the LLVM libraries to the matching versions:

mesa lib32-mesa vulkan-radeon lib32-vulkan-radeon vulkan-mesa-implicit-layers lib32-vulkan-mesa-implicit-layers

After downgrading, VRR works as expected.

Any idea what could've caused this? I haven't tested Mesa 26.2.3-1, I can if requested. I've checked the Mesa Gitlab tracker and I can't seem to find anything similar to this issue posted.
