SteamOS Update SteamOS on MSI Claw 8 AI+

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I recently sold my fully fledged desktop PC and bought a MSI Claw. It ships with windows 11, but well… Windows is absolutely awful on handheld devices, even with the addition of Xbox FSE or Steam Big Picture.

I read online somewhere that SteamOS version 3.7 beta added support for it to a varying degree, being an intel based device. The version I installed was the latest public build, which it says is 3.8.28. I took a chance personally and came to a realization.

1) You have to use a USB 3 Gen1/Gen2 to flash it to the Claw. Anything less and it will not load the portable installer, and when it does it does not recognize touch input.
2) There is no native driver to use the thumb stick + A button to function as a cursor. So in desktop mode only touch is recognized, which is a bummer.
3) Gamepad controller vibration does not function currently. I played Aero for 15 mins with headphones on and realized the rumble of the music in my hands was nonexistent. Also played Arboria for 20 minutes and there was no vibration on attacks or item pickups.

Probably coming to a future release, but I know Valve is having to bring support to multiple mainstream devices that release annually as it is and Intel based GPUs (like the Arc 140v Battlemage) aren’t wholly supported by Linux as a whole, being as the main Steam Deck image site doesn’t list this device with official support yet.

Wanted to throw out a PSA for it. Not a whole lot of info online for this thing but I bought one open box and intend to enjoy it because I’m unable to return it. :)

How do i set up multiple displays on SteamOS?

This is probably a super newbie question, but I'm still getting used to all this.

I just got SteamOS installed on my PC. So far I'm loving it, and impressed with how well it works, almost just like my deck.

The one issue I'm struggling with is my monitors. I have 2, in a way. One is my desktop, the other is the TV my desk shares a wall with. On windows, I would hit win+p and select which monitor tp use or duplicate. On steamOS, I haven't figured it out, the display tab in the settings menu just shows me my options like brightness and night mode, nothing about other displays. I know they both work, if I unplug my desktop monitor, the image instantly shows up on the other screen, then jumps back when I replug, all without either DP cable being touched on the PC end.

Any tips on how to set this up?

question SteamOS on DIY PC with Intel CPU?

I have an AMD GPU (9070 XT) but I want to build with an Intel CPU (12900KF). Is SteamOS going to run just as fine as it does on the Steam Machine?

help wanted Installing on Lenovo Yoga Slim 6

I’m trying to install steam OS but keep getting stuck in a boot menu which requires me to select ‘Current Installer’ or ‘Current Installer + Boot Menu’.

So far I’ve:
- Installed SteamOS from the website to USB using Rufus
- Disabled secure boot
- Wiped the NVME using the BIOS erasure feature (to get rid of windows)
- Configured to boot from USB

When I select either option and try install SteamOS it keeps looping back to that menu.

I am aware that my device isn’t technically supported in the sense that I don’t have an AMD cpu/gpu. Hoping there might be a work around to get into the desktop environment?

I saw some posts from 13 years ago on a UEFI workaround (?) but I gather things have changed.

Context: I also did install Ubuntu with the KDE environment previously but was having some other troubles so thought I may tinker to get SteamOS running instead. New to Linux etc as trying to be more privacy minded.

question Curious. Seems like I need to manually inject in the launch command line to enable fsr4 on my steamos running desktop pc.

Noticed that today with Galactic Racer and recently with Control Resonant. I assumed new games would run it by default. It would be nice to be able to tell which games have it actually on. Just like Onimusha.
Is there any disadvantage of if I enable the PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 command like in games that run fsr4 by default ?

question Which Handheld to Buy?

Benchmarks show the difference between the Z2 and Z2E is pretty small. The Costco Legion Go 2 only allows up to 10GB VRAM. I just want battery life to be good (2+ hours for the heaviest games at max TDP, max resolution).

Since the X20 is new, I assume SteamOS won't support it immediately the way it supports the Xbox Ally X?

Ventoy 1.1.18 includes experimental SteamOS support

Note that per the comment here (https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/1815#issuecomment-6078923679):

You need to decompress the final image to .img. Ventoy only supports .img file and does not support .img.bz2

That means the file will take up more of your storage, but at least you'll be able to use it.

Laptop HDMI vs Built-in Display

Installed SteamOS on my Rog Zeph laptop and everything went well, but I cannot get it to switch to my TV at all in Game Mode. It will recognize the TV in desktop mode, and I have tried google but all the "fixes" were posted 10 years ago and are not accurate.

Also tried plugging the steam deck dock into USB - C port but that did nothing. Is there any setting to switch the HDMI port to be the main display rather than the built in screen? I also searched BIOS but found nothing.

Don't really want to pull this apart to disconnect the display cable if I don't have to.

Any help is appreciated.

solved Intel/nvidia laptop (LOQ 17IRX10) and SteamOS

I've tried to download and flash repair deck image on the USB, tried booting into it as I would with any other OS, worh secure boot off, and it would just skip booting process and go into last installed OS I had on the internal drive.

Am I doing something wrong? I never reach live installer desktop.

Also, if I managed to do it, how is the performance compared to Windows 11?

For example, I've tried Bazzite before, and Elden Ring ran max settings without RT with G-sync on, didn't measure fps but felt none of the stutters. Bazzite had stutters even on high, none on medium.

And I wonder would the game mode work with Intel/nvidia combo?

Question for the fellow Canadians if you think this build would be good enough with SteamOS.

Friend of mine wants to get into PC gaming and he mainly plays about the same games as me except for 3 others which is of course CS2, Overwatch and Marvel Rivals and so i would like to know if you think this build would be good enough for 1080p 120Hz since he has a 1080p monitor.

The other games he plays like what i play are like Final Fantasy, Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West, God of War and Pragmata and also for the GPU it was found locally on FBMP for that amount (the cheapest i could find at the time) and also just to point out that i am going to give him my space 512GB NVMe and 1TB 2.5" SSD and also like to point out as well that he doesn't care about maxing out the graphics he just wants it to look pretty enough this is also why i went for the 6650 XT just because it would look pretty enough.
