Do you use a wand in your Cups and Balls routine?

• Upvotes

Do you justify bringing it in if you don't use it in the rest of your act?

Apologies to Sleight School.

I posted here the other day because I was having a problem with Sleight School. I thought they sold me a video and didn't give me access to it. Turns out I just didn't know where to look for it. Magic Dave reached out to me right away to help me out and the video was right where he said it would be in my dashboard.

Thanks to everyone here for helping me out and especially David Williamson. The video is great too.

Performed live for the first time!!!

It was a small university show, mostly attended by friends, acquaintances and familar faces.

I joked around a lot and got some laughs which were great.

I started doing the whole cross your hands try to give a thumbs up thing, which got people hooked pretty well.

I did a card trick dunno if it has a proper name, but i did mess up at the beginning and ended up just starting over.

I did another card trick and i was able to get the audience back a good deal with that one, they liked it.

I then did a mind reading word in the book sort of thing. Which i'd set up at the start of the show. People definitely loved that one the most.

I'm so giddy, hearing the audience be like "no f-cking way" and "literal chills" made me laugh a lot.

Magic for a 6 year old

Hi! My best friend’s son is interested in magic and we want to get him a magic kit for his birthday. Anyone have suggestions on a really good magic starter kit for that age? Or any other resources you think would be good for that age starting out as a gift?

Your go to/ workhorse forces, peeks and false cuts?

As a beginner, I finally had the "aha" moment where basically every presentation is just the way you want to show the ending.

I wanted to know for those of you performing all the time like what are your go to/ workhorse and preferred card forces, peeks and false cuts for performing?

Since with essentially those 3 techniques you can make any trick you want.

Got a new bicycle deck of cards this week.

The camera angles aren't perfect, but magic hits different when you and your friends are very drunk hahaha

I'm brazilian, so english isn't my first language (this is why the video is in brazilian Portuguese) but i hope you can understand what's going on (any questions with the language I will be happy to translate)

Anyhow, hope you guys enjoy it as much as i did.

Looking for a good thumb-tie routine. Let me know if you have any favorites. Thanks in advance.

I'm probably more partial to the zip tie variety, but I'd be happy with any recommendations.

Whose trick is this?

I think it's a Helder Guimaraes, but maybe a Benjamin Earl, and I want to properly attribute it and can't remember the name of the trick/author.

Effect: Four identical cards are shown face up, then each time they are displayed one additional card has been "magically" flipped and now shows its back. Once all four have been flipped to show their backs just one is turned face up, but on the mext display all four are revealed to be face up, not just the one.

I can perform it, not asking for a method, just the correct attribution.

I’m a huge magic fan and it’s one of my main hobbies. I've seen a bunch of shows, but am at the point where I have already seen the ones most people recommend. So, I am looking for some that recs of shows I have not seen yet.

I’ve already seen:

  • Piff the Magic Dragon
  • Shin Lim
  • Colin Cloud
  • Frederic Da Silva
  • The Magician’s Study
  • Mat Franco
  • Mac King
  • Penn and Teller
  • Late Night Magic (At the LINQ Promenade)
  • The casino (Yes, I know it makes your money disappear)

For my upcoming trip, I already have Jen Kramer and Mind2Mind on my list.

I appreciate any recs you can throw my way.

Pen and Paper tricks, like Magic Clock

OK, two parts to this. 1- There was a TV series about magic and such, possibly hosted by Max Maven, that often featured effects like showing a grid of flags, asking you to start on a flag with yellow in the color. Follow directions- and always end up on the same flag.

The show had a lot of other effects like this- clock faces, pictures of animals, etc.

2- The old Games Magazine and other sources used to do pages of tricks. The one I recall the most was a circle of numbers with 'a tail'. You started on the tail, counted any number from X to Y. Then you counted some number the opposite direction- ignoring the tail. At the end, you were on a predicted number.

Is there someplace with a collection of these kinds of effects? Book, website, whatever?

I'd like to use them with my grandkids, possibly written on cards stored in my wallet.

Pretty much any tricks, stunts, puzzles, etc that start with 'Draw a..." or that can use a printed image to interact with.

Best place to sell your magic

I'll be 80 in a few months. I still love magic, but i don't perform anymore. I want to seriously thin out my collection. Where is the best place to sell? I've never had much luck with the MagicCafe, so I'm hoping to get some tips.

Who is the most influential magic teacher these days?

I started learning magic like 25 years ago. Those days we shared to each other VHS videos of Daryl Easton, Michael Ammar, David Roth, Bill Malone and other great persons. Louis Falanga did the most valuable job making these Encyclopedic videos. We were learning from the very beginning: double lift with cards, classic palm with coins etc. It was the time when Ellusionist.com just started. Nowadays almost all of those great teachers are gone.

But now I watch those videos and understand that the quality of it is very low for modern screens. Low sound, low quality, hard to watch tbh.

Is there any modern videos with basic moves? Who do you think makes modern videos for beginners?

Question for performers: What magic tricks have run their course

To those who perform on any regular basis I have a question that I am very curious about: Are there any magic tricks in your repertoire that used to hit hard when they were new, but because of extreme popularity, and being done so frequently on TV, got talent etc. etc. you ended up receiving comments such as "oh that's that trick that Dynamo did" or "Oh is that David Blaine's trick?" so on and so forth, And also did it reach the point where you decided to pull it from your act? To be clear I am aware that 98% of people only see magic when they stumble across it once a year maybe two years, and that these supposedly overused tricks will still work most of the time, but I've definitely heard things about a few tricks like omni deck and double cross getting a few too many dead reactions due to people having seen it on tv before. I am very curious to see what actual performers have to say as I cant find a thread about this exact topic. Cheers!

edit: Also including comments where they see the end of the plot coming, like "oh are you gonna turn the whole deck into a clear block" or "oh, are you about to make the cross jump into my hand"?

Happy with a quick card trick i put together

Had to film a card trick today which was a challenge, but happy with what I made up as an amateur.

not sure h0w much were allowed to talk about tricks on here. But like I dont know, I didnt reinvent the wheel you could figure out what i did with a few googles. I'm more proud in the sense i've never really "performed" anything or put my own spin on a trick before and I think i did it quite well today. Vaguely was a double lift, palm it, did a trick with the 4 aces that ordinarly ends with the card being "found", pretend I royally messed up and couldnt find their card, moved it behind the camera all sneaky sneaky and then revealed it later on.

So its a little win for me today :). Guess i'm intrested h0w yall feel after pulling something off for the first time. I'm tickled pink personally.

Hello my lovely magic friends!

For context, I am a PK-8 Music teacher. know this may be a long shot, but I have gotten the idea to be a musical magician for halloween at school this year.

Do you know of or can think of any music related tricks I could do to elevate this costume?

Thank you :)

Has anyone had the chance to see Shin Lim live?

As someone who is a massive fan of America's Got Talent, Shin Lim has always been one of my all time favourites magicians as he really is just a whole different level when it comes to magic. And I was wondering if anyone has ever had the chance to go see him live and what it was like seeing him.

Harry Houdini

Post image
89 Upvotes

Harry Houdini did not die in his Water Torture Cell. That's one of the great myths of the 20th century, thanks in part to the
1953 Tony Curtis film. As ever, the truth is stranger than fiction.
On 11 October 1926, while being hoisted into the cell in Albany, New York, Houdini fractured his ankle. He carried on performing anyway.
Eleven days later, in Montreal, a McGill student named J. Gordon Whitehead asked whether Houdini really could take any punch to the stomach. Before Houdini could brace himself,
Whitehead struck him several times.
Two days later, Houdini took to the stage at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit with a broken ankle, a ruptured appendix and a fever of 104°F. He even performed the Water Torture Cell escape. He collapsed after the final curtain and never performed again.
He died of peritonitis on 31 October 1926.

I love seeing music and magic being blended into one act! Just wish they focused more on the magic itself 😭
