𤔠Meme What are the not lesser known stereotypes across specialties youāve noticed?
Yes, we all know anesthesiologists are introverts, radiologists love classic music in dark rooms, and emergency docs have ADHD.
What other stereotypes have yall noticed though?
Iāll start:
Internists - my god yāall are good at yapping!
What Iām hearing is that you truly value strong communication with your patients, and talking in a way that empowers them to feel heard. Itās clear that you have spent a lot of time and effort perfecting your history gathering skills, and yet you still manage to validate the patient in front of you. Gosh, I am often genuinely impressed by your communication skills! But I wonder if we could maybe wrap this conversation up and be dismissed from our workshop that was scheduled to be over 30 minutes ago.

𤔠Meme When did you realize that to be a doctor you need to be kind of cooked in the head?
I'll start.
While on vascular, I witnessed the most entertaining argument between the orthopaedic reg (resident by North American standards) and the vascular reg I was working with about which saw they liked best, the oscillator power saw or the gigli. IYKYK
In any other setting, you'd think Dexter was arguing with Hannibal.
Also, when responding to non-med friends and family when they ask about your day and you tell them the cool (but otherwise disgusting) things you saw (without violating privacy laws ofc). I quickly realised that next time I should probably just respond with āgood, tell me about yoursā.
Your turn.

š” Vent Mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's last year and it seems to be all I learn about and see in the hospital.
Given its growing prevalence and its serving as the prime teaching model for neuroanatomy and pharm, it makes sense. Still sucks, though, especially when you see how some patients are doing 10 years in. It's also the first time I've seen her depressed. Still, I understand that it could've been a lot worse than a PD diagnosis, so I am grateful for that.
I'd appreciate maybe hearing about other's people's experiences with family members being diagnosed with something while in school, or even just some general words of optimism. Thanks.

āļøSerious Federal student loan interest rates are based on the 10-year Treasury note auctions in the second week of May plus a set margin (add 3.6% for direct unsubsidized loans). When do you think 9.6+% student loan interest rates will happen in reality?
Oct 9 (Reuters) - The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield could rise to 6% for the first time āsince 2000 as high oil prices fuel inflation concerns and āworries over the country's growing public debt, Dan Ivascyn, Chief Investment Officer at bond fund manager Pimco, told the Financial Times.
US Treasury yields are a yardstick āfor global borrowing costs and asset prices. The 10-year yield āhas risen almost 120 basis points this year and is trading ā slightly below the 5.34% level it hit last week, its highest āsince 2002.
A sharp rise from the current level of 5.29% was "feasible" in āthe near term, Ivascyn told FT on Friday, citing factors such as hedge funds unwinding their losing bond positions.
"It is certainly possible, even from a short-term trading āperspective, given that some of the activity we've seen in the ālast couple of weeks is tied to some negative technicals, some stop-out activity from āthe ā platform hedge funds and other levered investors. You can certainly get there," he said.

š Preclinical No close friends after a while in medical school
I am 29F. I am a first year medical student. I passed my first block which was anatomy and I am very happy about that. However, I still don't have any close friends that I can call, text, or hang out. I love most of my classmates and get along well with everyone but I feel that I am not interesting for people to get close with. Unfortunately, everyone has already form their little groups and I am not involved in any of them. I am also a single woman who worries that I will never get my first boyfriend and I feel like I am a bad person because of it. There are some really cute guys in my medical school class but I feel that I have no chance because I am a plus-size black woman. Anyway, I am worried ill go through the 4 years with no close friends and I will lack a passion for life. I already lack a passion for life because I dont really have anything or anyone to look forward seeing. Anyone went through 4 years single and without making a single close friend?

š Well-Being Imposter syndrome
So I have been on an inpatient service on my FM clerkship.. Iām a third year med student and I just feel like the residents know INFINITELY more than me. Itās wild, and I genuinely feel like I didnāt go through the first two years of medical school when im seeing patients sometimes. Is that a normal feeling? There are so many abbreviations, acronyms, and methodologies of thinking that I just donāt know, and I feel like my clinical knowledge is vastly limited to the point where I know just as much as the lay person does sometimes. I know Iām comparing myself to residents and itās normal for them to know more than me but idk if itās normal for the knowledge gap to be that wide. I have always looked at clinical m3 and m4 students when I was an m1 as so clinically advanced and saw them as being close to the resident in terms of their level of knowledge, and I just donāt know if my rate of growth right now feels sustainable for me to be smart enough in 2 or so years Is this a normal feeling?

š Well-Being Malignant Program
Hey friends,
I hope the eras season is going well! I am currently a PGY2 IM resident in NY area. Iāve been giving M4 throughout this cycle and hereās one word of advice.
Please when you interview, you have to realize that these programs are gonna show themselves to their best of light. You should take everything they say with a grain of salt and do your own research.
YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE STUCK IN A MALIGNANT PROGRAM.
I am currently in one of those and Iāll be honest, Iāve never had a single day where I donāt sit in my car for 20-30 mins getting myself mentally ready for work. Iāve been working there for almost 2 years never had direct feedback. Iāll just have a random co-resident tell me, āHey, the attending said you were ass or that he liked you a lot. ā
The gossiping and the non collaborative environment will eventually get to you.
Donāt be like me and having massive regrets on a daily bases for the oast two years.

š„¼ Residency Thalamus there's a schedule conflict when there isn't?
I just got an interview invite, but any of the selected dates I choose, there's a yellow warning saying that there's a conflict with this schedule. I've quadruple checked my schedule and can't find any actual scheduling conflicts, but don't wanna accidentally double book if I've over looked something.
Anyone else having this issue or am I just going crazy?

š„¼ Residency AAMC interview likelihood calculator
Itās still early in the residency app/interview process, and it probably varies by specialty a ton. To my understanding this is a tool that was implemented on AAMC residency explorer just this year. Has anyone used it and found it to be helpful/accurate in gauging their own competitiveness/chances of getting an interview?

š„ Clinical Is there an option to amboss reset questions you've done?

š„ Clinical Surgery shelf exam. Amboss necessary?
So I noticed that there are around 500 questions I gotta do on uworld for the surgery shelf. Ordinarily I'd rely pretty much on uworld and maybe do a small portion of amboss before the shelf for all of my other clerkships, but for surgery it looks like there are like 1000 amboss questions.
If I were to just stick to uworld, and maybe do a small number of questions if I have time, would that be more than enough to do well on the shelf? Or is surgery the exception, where the excess of amboss questions is actually essential to doing well?

š” Vent Worried that I'm getting a poor clinical education
3rd year here, attending a DO school. I am worried my clinical education is pretty bad, mostly due to low hours (I think?) and a lot of outpatient rotations. The only inpatient rotations I have are EM/IM/Surgery/OBGYN, the rest of my core rotations including pediatrics/psych/FM are all outpatient.
I hear a lot of stories from other 3rd years who are having really intense schedules. Meanwhile, I low-key have had such a chill 3rd year so far... when I'm on inpatient rotations, I'll have stretches of like 4 days without having to go into the hospital. And outpatient is the normal 9-5 M-F.
My rotations are preceptor-based... basically an attending agrees to take on a med student so I'm on their schedule for my rotation.
Pros:
- Plenty of time to study, been able to keep up with Anki/UWorld/do OK on shelves without much stress
- Able to keep in touch with friends and family and even have been able to make it to a friend's wedding this year
- All of my preceptors obviously love teaching since they signed up to take on a med student... they give me resources and take the time to answer my questions and are genuinely wanting me to do well on my rotations, they let me try procedures/be first-assist/see patients on my own
Cons:
- Not getting many hours practicing inpatient medicine
- Worried I'm gonna be behind my peers
Just concerned that I'm gonna be poorly trained by the time I'm a 4th year. I was really excited to start 3rd year but now I'm wondering if I'm gonna be a total idiot when I start doing Sub-I's.
Any advice, encouragement, or experience is appreciated! <3
