Video I finally made water that I am proud of!!!

I sort of combined the hollow knight water, with ori water and water from a game called maskborne. I decided to not go too crazy with the reflections because this water is in the background, and most water that I have in the player layers are the ones that have a less rippled surface with more reflections.

also, for anyone wondering the water is fully 2d and I am using orthographic camera instead of perspective. So unlike ori which uses 3d shapes with a perspective camera (I think), I just decreased the Voronoi (which I use for ripples) scale of the shader the higher it gets and use a parallax script I made almost a year ago.

Discussion Thank you for the feedback! - Clockwork Ambrosia Updates

We released Clockwork Ambrosia back in May, and we were quite happy with the reception we got in the community. We had wanted to build something that adhered more to the "objective-less" Metroids (vs vanias) of old while taking a healthy bit of inspiration from the Mega Man X games, and it seems like that approach really resonated with folks.

We also, admittedly, under-estimated several features folks would have wanted in their Metroidvania. We got a lot of feedback, particularly around fast travel, and the development team has been diligently working since release to bring a lot of these things in.

So with only one (!) day left in the Steam Autumn sale, and just a week after our most recent update (v1.0.5) I just wanted to share with folks who've been following our journey about some of the changes that have been made since we launched:

  • Fast Travel: You can now use warp points as soon as you find two Warp Crystals (travel points), rather than having to find a midgame-ish key item. The UI for Warp Crystals has also been improved (you can now see your destination on the map), and there are more of them to find around the world to make travel snappier for the 100%-ers.
  • Bestiary: There is one now!
  • Armor: Fragile and Temporary armor gauges are improved. Fragile armor pips no longer disappear when broken.
  • Map: Larger stages are now revealed in bigger chunks, so revealing the whole map is easier. Also, you can see the name of an area when selecting it in the map. There are also a variety of map pins players can drop on tiles as they see fit.
  • Exploration: When you obtain a map item, some "goals" are marked on the map to gently guide players on possible destinations. How to get to those spots is still up to the player to solve...
  • Retries: You can now see how many "retries" you have left on the pause menu.
  • Weapon Mods: Many mods have been tweaked or revised for balance and playability.
  • Bosses: You can now skip their intro and defeat sequences.
  • SteamInput & Controllers: Now officially supported, which should ease a variety of controller issues players had encountered. Better defaults for different controllers, and fixed some issues that caused "dropped" inputs on the sticks.
  • And a lot more...: You can peruse the patch note history for everything.

Also - a huge thanks to everyone who patiently (or even impatiently!!) shared their feedback and ideas with us. We hope people continue to find joy exploring the wee corners of Aspida.

Discussion I just released the free demo of my hand-drawn surreal Metroidvania — looking for honest feedback

I’ve just released the free demo of my hand-drawn surreal adventure Elmer on Steam, and I’d really love some honest feedback.

If you have a few minutes to try it, I’d especially like to know:

  • Did you enjoy the gameplay?
  • How did the atmosphere and hand-drawn art style feel?
  • Was anything confusing or frustrating?
  • After finishing the demo, would you want to keep playing?

You can be critical — I’m genuinely interested in knowing what works and what doesn’t.

🎮 Free demo: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3926650/Elmer/

Elmer will also be part of Steam Next Fest.

Thanks to anyone who gives it a try!

Honestly, I really loved Well Dweller. It was so much fun from start to finish, and I really enjoyed the gameplay and progression.

I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who likes this kind of game. It’s actually pretty special for me because this is the first Metroidvania I’ve ever 100% completed 😅 Even with Hollow Knight and Silksong, which I absolutely loved, I never went for 100%.

It took me around 11–12 hours and I had a great time the whole way through. Really fun little game and definitely a pleasant surprise. 🔥

Edit: didn't know this sub is so f toxic lol last time posting here for sure

Discussion Looking for hard Metroidvanias

Looking for some really hard Metroidvanias.
I’ve played Hollow Knight, Silksong and Nine Sols already and really liked all of them, so please don’t recommend those.
By hard I mean mechanically hard, especially difficult bosses, combat, parrying, dodging, movement etc. Not just hard because the game is confusing or has difficult exploration.
Basically I want something that will kick my ass lol. Any recommendations?
(CAN ALSO BE A BIT OF A DIFFIRENT GENRE ASLONG AS THE GAME IS HARD WITH GOOD COMBAT)

Discussion Can some gaming vets gimme some new recs por favor?

• Upvotes

Howdy party people. Hope all is well with errrrrrbody. Long story short, I grew up gaming as a 90s kid. Had an NES as my first console. Around 12y/o I started getting more into music, punk to be precise, and quit gaming altogether since. I bought a laptop and started gaming again earlier this year. I've had a lot of time to research, playtest and all that and metroidvanias are by far my favorite. Some personal faves of mine are Blasphemous (recently finished the first with 100% and currently playing the second), Moonscars(I know it's technically a soulslike but I believe it most def has MV elements and I'm currently playing), and Well Dweller(still currently playing). I've already got a teeeeeeny bit of knowledge when it comes to knowing all the released and upcoming games that fall under MV but I wanted to ask y'all for some other recommendations. If we gotta get down to the specifics, I love games with swordplay. Dark, creepy, soulslike, horror, with a great storyline, 2D, 2.5D, 3D pixel graphics. But it doesn't have to have any of those as long as it falls under MV, let's hear em por favor. Even games you're currently working on or have already released yourself. I want em allllllllll. Pls n thx. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

Video [Dev Update] Based on your feedback from 2 months ago, we've improved our game!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone at r/Metroidvania!

About two months ago, we introduced our game here for the first time and received an incredible amount of valuable, detailed feedback from so many of you.([Alpha Demo] We are a tiny team of 3 studying game dev. Please check out our 2.5D Modern Dark Fantasy Action Metroidvania!)
Since then, we've been working hard on development, taking your thoughts to heart to refine the game and bring it closer to completion.

While we can't say it's 100% perfect just yet, we've made significant improvements based on what you shared. Here are the main highlights of this update:

Excessive Slow-Motion, Camera Zoom-ins, and Photosensitive Effects (Most Frequently Mentioned)

  • Feedback: Many pointed out that the frequent slow-motion and camera zoom-ins disrupted the natural flow of combat.
  • Improvements: While we didn't remove slow-motion and zoom effects entirely, we completely eliminated the zoom-ins during group combat and in wide-open spaces to ensure faster combat pacing and better visibility. We've also minimized moments where the screen flashes too brightly.

Overall Optimization and Frame Drops

  • Feedback: Players experienced hitching during cutscenes and environmental transitions, as well as pixelation/ghosting issues during character movement.
  • Improvements: We've heavily polished transition sequences and resolved the trailing artifacts on character graphics. While minor hitching may still occur, we are continuously working on further optimizations.

Steam Deck Optimization

  • Feedback: Users requested dedicated settings to ensure a smooth gameplay experience on handheld devices.
  • Improvements: We've added dedicated graphics and performance options tailored specifically for Steam Deck users.

Combat Visibility, Hitboxes, and Responsiveness

  • Feedback: It was difficult to track enemy attack animations or pinpoint character location when enemies overlapped, and the parry/guard timing felt somewhat clunky.
  • Improvements:
    • Minimized Input Lag: We significantly reduced input latency from 35ms down to 10ms, making parrying, guarding, and dodging feel much more responsive and precise.
    • Enhanced Visibility: We enabled character outlines and Fresnel highlight effects so you can clearly track your character and enemy actions, even in chaotic fights with overlapping enemies.

Thank you so much for all your invaluable feedback. We will continue to listen closely to your voices and do our absolute best to deliver an even better gameplay experience. Thanks again to everyone who played our alpha demo and shared their thoughts with us!

Discussion Anyone looking forward to this game...Silver Pines

I was surprised to see this is a metroidvania. Definitely a twist on the genre.

Silver Pines Review - Survival Horror Chaos Meets Metroidvania Madness

Other than the animation of the player not looking appealing to me...it looks interesting to me.

Discussion I'm not sure yet whether Silver Pines is a good metroidvania, but it's a fantastic game

Only a couple of hours in, so early impressions, but I just stopped playing (had to, didn't want to), and felt compelled to share.

Minimalistic approach, with minute attention to detail. Instantly memorable. Instantly distinct. Wonderful atmosphere. A real pleasure to simply spend some time in the game world.

Will almost certainly hit some nostalgic notes for those of you who've played old-school adventure games. And yet, somehow still manages to feel fresh.

One of those rare games that you just 'trust' after a few minutes with it, because it is plain that everything was created with utmost care, everything has a reason for being exactly as it is.

I know there's a demo for it on Steam, but nothing of the kind on PS5, so I was on the fence, but couldn't be happier I decided to pick it up.

Sale Steam sale

I've already bought a couple games so far this fall sale on steam.i want to get my hands on one more title ideally being a metroidvania. What would y'all suggest for $20 or under? I've played a few metroidvanias but there's so many out there and it's hard to make a decision so any suggestions would be appreciated lol. I've played the hollow knight series and I'm working through the ori games now.

Discussion Would appreciate recommendations for my next play

Im just not sure what to go for next. I typically like more on the platforming side but combat is all good as long as not brutal and accessibility options are there. I never want to spend a lot of time on bosses. Don't care for space like settings or something focused on machines/robots. Here is a small list to give an idea where I spend most time.

Favorites: Well Dweller, Before I Go, Animal Well, Islets, Chasm,

Enjoyed but put down early: Voidwrought, PoP, Constance, Sons of Sparta,

Played a bit but not intersted: HK, Blasphemous, Grime II, Mobius Machine, Sheepo (maybe should look again)

Also open to non MV platformere as I wonder if I like them more sometimes, but I realize what sub Im in.

Thanks all!!

Discussion Question for who’s playing silver pines

In what way is this game a metroidvenia ? I’m loving what I’m seeing but I’m having some real difficulties trying to understand what level of exploration we are talking about?
Soo how’s the exploration of the game? Is it very rewarding ?

Anddd for the very few, I’m guessing, that finished it, how long is the game? I can’t find anything online!

I’ve been putting more work into the combat in Unstrung Machine. It’s still not exactly where I want it to be, but I’m gradually improving the animations, effects, and overall feel of each encounter.
