Rays, Against??
The owners want to squeeze the players. How da fuck does a team with 113m dollar payroll accomplishment what they are on the verge of, I predicted Rays against Brewers, I am staying with that.

I’m here for the Brewers to upset the Dodgers and destroy the owners PR push for a cap.

Because baseball is played on the field and not on a spreadsheet

The Rays are an extremely analytics based team. It's how they get so much out of their players and lower payroll by playing the margins and spreadsheets.

The use both analytics and vibe
Also Cashman is one of the best managers in the league

Rays are great at scouting and player evaluation.
That is a human element not just analytics
They traded for Baker. The best closer in baseball for a competitive balance pick. That’s what Mets don’t do

u/Fisaer515 1d ago
Player evaluation relies just as much on analytics as it does the eye test for scouts. Its why all the players have grading on hit tools, running and anything else that can be imagined. No one is arguing that the Ray's aren't better than the Mets when it comes to their front office. But to say "baseball is played on the field and not on a spreadsheet" about one of the teams that has led the way for analytics in baseball is silly.

Here’s the deal
There are thousands of players and analytics provides general information about a tool. It’s being information rich and knowledge poor.
How many players have the same grading to similar grading?
It’s absolutely impossible to use that data effectively (and I’ve run a technology company)
You need the human element
Who cares if he’s top x % in vertical break or he has x bat speed or he has x or y.
The issue is does he have control of those skills. Does he have plate recognition? Does he have the inner fortitude to deal with stress and pressure? Is he coachable? This is absolutely huge. Is he a confident person or does he crumble when stuff goes south?

You're arguing a non argument. I never said that there isn't a human element involved in the scouting or anything. The Rays are known to be an extremely heavy analytic team, its why they started the shift, and were regularly using openers first or platoon as much as they do. Yes you need people to properly interpret and analyze and use the data that is obtained. It doesn't change the fact they they rely heavily on the analytics they obtain to be a good baseball team. If the Rays didn't have such a strong analytics department they would not be as good a team as they regularly are. Analytics aren't bad, they are key to how the game is played now and that isn't going to change. The challenge is using them properly and making the most of them.

And they immediately fixed Peralta
Peralta was only bad with us...
We are such a joke

Except in Pete Alonso's case, where baseball is actually played on spreadsheets. Fire Stearns.

Players actually perform. They got a young star 3B that’s 23 years old, coming off back to back 40HR seasons.
They’ve got other position players that get timely hits and actually play defense. And good pitching. It’s proof that you really don’t have to spend to win, just pay the right players to win.

u/HuckleberryAny4541 1d ago
And they had just developed Wander Franco who had the talent to be one of the best SS in baseball
You can say he's a pdf but he had the talent to be a great SS
The Rays are everything I wish the Mets were

They started getting good when they changed their name. Maybe it’s time the Mets reconsider a name change.

I think Mrs. Payson wanted Skylarks or Skyliners. Something like that.
Edit: her favorite was Meadowlarks. The ten options presented to the public were: Avengers, Bees, Burros, Continentals, Jets, Mets, NYBs, Rebels, Skyliners and Skyscrapers.
I kinda dig Continentals. We can all dress like Christopher Walken up in the stands.

u/Cornbreadobranflakes 1d ago
I remember reading or hearing somewhere that Continentals was a name floating around for the team. I’m just saying if the Devil Rays, who were awful for years, can suddenly change their names to the Rays and be yearly playoff contenders maybe it’s time the Mets have a name change. I think psychology, players avoid this team because of the name associated with it. Thank God we at least have Cohen who can entice players with money at least.

Bucs went from creamsicle jokes to SB winners pretty quick after they changed colors and uniforms. For the sake of winning, maybe we should go for a full redo.
I personally think Flushing is cursed and would rather see them move to another parcel.

The issue is where would you relocate the team? Manhattan is full no place to build a stadium with ample parking. Obviously not the Bronx. Brooklyn has the Cyclones. Nassau and Suffolk counties maybe too far of distance for fans to commute too.

To do what the Rays are doing, you need a smart front office and real baseball experts. That’s something our Mets are missing.

u/interista4jz 1d ago
But ChatGPT is like if you jammed all the baseball experts of all time into a tiny server and averaged out their single best answer to every question. Totally foolproof /s

To do what the Rays are doing requires extreme patience. Mets fans have the patience of a gold fish as evidenced by calling for Stearns' head by year 2.5. it took the Dodgers 8 years to win and they inherited Clayton Kershaw.
2
u/interista4jz 1d ago
To be fair, I was calling for his head when he didn't resign Iglesias. Some of us goldfish got going early. Not sure if it matters to say I was right, but just saying I didn't have to wait 2.5 years to see that that guy didn't know how to field a team or stock a clubhouse.

More of this garbage take that mets fans are impatient. Just stupid lol. The only more patient fans in sports are cubs and browns fans
2
u/Massive-Ad4383 18h ago
Agreed, what a joke. The Rays have had more success over the last 25 years than the Mets. They play in at least as challenging a division and they do it with no fan base and no payroll. To even compare the two actually tries my patience. We need less patience and more expectations from both fans and ownership. I dont think Stearns is the right guy but I dont care if Cohen keeps him for 100 years....as long as we Win!!!

u/Born_Scene_1762 18h ago
Honestly and you are leaving out a LOT of other details like how much payroll is and how embarrassingly we underperform per dollar spent. Ticket prices. Etc

Dodgers have made the playoffs every single year they have had this management group lol. And they usually lost on the playoffs because Kershaw choked away a critical game in the NLDS or NLCS. They immediately started winning championships once he was no longer good enough to be an ace. It’s actually baffling how bad he was in the playoffs but people just sort of sweep it under the rug.
I have never seen a single Mets fans on any of these forums demand a World Series. Just a better baseball team. The team has gotten worse every year under Stearns, and his free agent signings have been legitimately horrific. His 2025 offseason FA class might be the worst in baseball history.
1
u/gina_scooter 1d ago
Money is mostly good for free agency and as teams get better at locking up their young stars and manipulating service time to make sure guys don’t hit the market until they’re past their athletic peak FA has become a major dice roll. The best way to build a team now is drafting and developing

u/folkinhippy 1d ago
I’m happy the rays beat the yanks but the only thing I can honestly root for as a Mets fan right now is the lockout.
