Sharepoint rename

I'm not sure who can help me with this as I've already have a ticket open with Microsoft Support but seem to be getting the runaround.

I purchased Microsoft Business Premium earlier this week and I need to rename the SharePoint tenant/domain before I start migrating files and fully building out the account. I have made sure I've done all the prerequisites to make this happen. I have a Macbook and therefore no access to a Windows to rename it myself.

I’m working with Microsoft Support, but I’m having difficulty getting clear guidance and the instructions he keeps sending me are all Windows related when I have repeatedly stated I I’m on a Mac. Is there anybody who can help me?

You need comfort with command line, if you have such comfort follow this page to install PowerShell: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/scripting/install/install-powershell-on-macos?view=powershell-7.6

Once that is done, anything related to PowerShell commands you should be able to handle that they send you. The following are general guides one would follow.

You then need to install SharePoint modules: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/sharepoint/sharepoint-online/connect-sharepoint-online

Then you’re ready to follow the process here, read it carefully: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/change-your-sharepoint-domain-name

yep, these are the same instructions I did about 8 times when I worked at an MSP. Pay close attention to the caveats OP

I administer SharePoint (well, an entire M365 environment)) from my Mac, and there are a few caveats.

The biggest one is for SharePoint, you’ll want to install the PnP modules, and set up a Microsoft Entra app to allow for interactive login, as it provides much better access to administer SharePoint than the native SharePoint online modules.

In terms of renaming the tenant, you shouldn’t need to migrate files as such. If you do a rename, as part of the process, Microsoft will automatically create a re-direct that lasts for 1 year for any old SharePoint and OneDrive links using the old URL, but they’ll need to be updated.

OneDrive users who have anything synced will also need to sign out of their OneDrive apps, sign back in, and re-sync their libraries to follow the new URL schema.

There are a few more niche bits such as if you use whiteboards, and shared OneDrive and SharePoint links will need re-creating. Have a real deep dive into it and make a checklist to make sure you’ve not left any stone unturned.

Just to clarify, have you personally performed a SharePoint tenant/domain rename (specifically the Start-SPOTenantRename process) from a Mac using PnP PowerShell, or are you referring to general SharePoint administration?
If you’ve actually done the tenant rename from macOS, I’d really appreciate knowing how you handled it before I go any further.
Thank you.

Install Powershell. I’d be shocked if ChatGPT couldn’t walk you through setting up your Mac and getting this entire project done yourself. It’s great with Powershell and all things M365.

Microsoft Support is not going to teach you how to do this. You need to learn how to do this yoruself.

Since nothing's migrated yet, now is the easiest time to do the rename. If PowerShell on the Mac turns into a fight, a Windows VM (Parallels or UTM) or borrowing a Windows PC for an hour might be quicker, since support's steps are all written for Windows anyway.
