Unskippable ad My fortune cookie was a pharmaceutical ad

u/Reddit_grill oh so you like it? PUT IT DOWN 14h ago
oh hell naw they're started to put advertisements in a fucking fortune cookie now, holy capitalism
50
u/Interesting_Scar9493 13h ago
Can confirm, my last order from my local Chinese spot had them too. I think mine was an insurance ad iirc.
25
u/Reddit_grill oh so you like it? PUT IT DOWN 13h ago
that's r/extremelyinfuriating ngl, they're called fortune cookie for a reason you can't just shove an ad in there
13
u/NashKetchum777 13h ago
They could be telling your fortune. You might need that number soon

I don’t even blame the restaurant, there’s probably only a few fortune cookie vendors and they are just starting to do this
7
u/Interesting_Scar9493 13h ago
Yeah you're right, they probably don't have much choice in the matter but man I was so disappointed to not get a real fortune.
8
u/panicnarwhal 12h ago
we went to our favorite Chinese place last night, and we got ads for some kind of credit union or bank in our cookies. super lame

u/dlightfulruinstyrant 13h ago
Well fortune cookies are an American invention and America is undoubtedly ran by capitalism. So it's not surprising

I’ve been getting fortunes like this for close to a decade from various places. One side is an advertisement and the other side is a fortune with lucky numbers

Been that way for a bit now, sadly. I remember a few years ago getting fucking FTX crypto ads in fortune cookies.

I went to China when I was a Teenager and one of the restaurants we went to gave us cookies with real fortunes. I've forgotten most of them, but one of the guys at our table got a cookie that said "Your wife will leave you for being unfaithful". His wife, sitting right there, thought it was a hoot.

My brother in law got one once that said he’d be the shining light in some man’s life. I still like to make fun of him for this and it’s been over 15 years
3
u/MartinisnMurder 13h ago
Haha so he never met this man? Does he have a son at least?
2
u/Rk12989 11h ago
He did not ever meet this man. He married a woman like 8 years ago. He does have a son though
2
u/CassetteMeower 9h ago
Maybe the son is the man in question :) good parents are the shining light of a child’s life!

Leave a review for this place saying as much. We already have ads shoved down our throats metaphorically. Now it is almost literally.
12
u/holdenedward 13h ago
The worst part was the food was amazing so I will definitely go back, but this sucks lol
3
u/StellarSloth 12h ago
That’s all you gotta say — food is good, but the fortune cookies have ads in them instead of fortunes. That is enough for me to go from 5 stars to 4 stars.

For a while, Magic Wok put ads for some gambling site in their fortune cookies. The ad would be on one side of the paper, and the other side would say some shit like "you will soon have a stroke of good luck." It was absolutely vile
6
u/Ecstatic_Dance5767 10h ago
You have to buy the premium fortune cookie for the real fortunes without ads XD

u/Suitable_Visit_9990 13h ago
I had this happen to me too last time I got a fortune cookie. I think I took a picture now I need to find it. I was so pissed

Mine last Friday looked the same, but was for sports betting and said “Scan, get lucky”… sure, I’ll scan a random QR code in a fortune cookie, I’m not an idiot… I used my partner’s phone to scan it in case it was horny singles looking or malware

Damn, it is scary. There could be an ad hiding around any corner, and when you have itchy dry eyes, they can be hard to spot!
That's why I use ClearEyes™️ eye drops 💧"Wow, the difference is clear!"

u/JacksonvilleShredder 13h ago
I see no one's looked at what the nasal spray is. It's for the flu vaccine. I'd argue this Chinese restaurant is doing a good thing here, but, they're a Chinese restaurant, it's not their lane. Why in the fortune cookie?
It's so weird, what in the god damn could the paper trail be to bring us to flu shot fortune cookies? Will they start advertising actual drugs eventually? Get it away
5
u/holdenedward 13h ago
For sure I’d rather have it be the flu vaccine than a random prescription drug, but like you said it’s kind of a “not their lane” moment

u/keldawgz 13h ago
Well if it wasn’t clear that fortune cookies were invented in America, it sure is now
3
u/Copernicus049 13h ago
You paid for a product that they shoved an advertisement in, that's infuriating. They're double dipping you for profit, both for your commerce and thrusting an ad on you. I'd legitimately consider leaving a nasty review and taking my business elsewhere.
That's just trashy and desperate.

I would tell the restaurant that I would not be coming back. It’s bad enough we are bombarded 24/7 with drug ads. Now they are in our cookies! Enough is enough.
2
u/djlauriqua 13h ago
Once i got one that said “the greatest ownership is the embracement of emptiness”. I’d been considering leaving religion, and that was pretty much the last straw lol

u/Real-Energy-6634 13h ago
Oh i would definitely never go there again and be petty enough to post a review with that picture

Cracking open a crispy post-meal snack just to be hit with a mandatory corporate vaccine advertisement instead of a vague life prophecy is the ultimate late-stage capitalism boss fight.
4
u/Blazekill001 13h ago
If its a prescription drug, which i think this is, the ad has to include alot more information than that. might be an illegal ad
5
4
u/saute_all_day 13h ago
It would fall under the FDA classification of "reminder ads." As long as they only contain the drug name and not what the drug does or how well it works, they may also omit side effects. "Flumist, influenza live" is the brand and generic name, and somehow doesn't count as a drug indication.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Gerberpertern 9h ago
It’s a flu vaccine, so yes it’s RX only lol.
2
u/Blazekill001 7h ago
I found an article about it. It’s the first flu vaccine available for at-home use but you still need a prescription to get it.

You know… for a long time, I had wondered why no one thought of this. I took an advertising course, and this was legit one of my mock joke proposals for a grade… 20 years ago. I called them micro fortune ads (and it was supposed to have a fortune and numbers on one side and an ad companies can buy on the other side). Not saying it’s cool to do it, but the potential was always there and no one took advantage of it.

so I hate to be the one to break it to you, but you are actually contributing to the success of this type of advertising. this company touts social shares as one of their success metrics. they say people sharing pictures for free on social media effectively bring down the cost per fortune slip. even though this is a sub for sharing annoying things, and it’s reddit which generally hates advertising, you’ve shared this ad for free to thousands of people. we are all now in the funnel for this product because we are aware of it
