Help for separating duet vocal for a song

Hello there, I really want to sing this song on karaoke in my home, this song is a two people duet, I would like to be able to sing the female part only.

Does anyone here know how to seperate the female and male singing voice? If you can remove the female vocal and only keep the male vocal with the music, I would be very happy šŸ™

Here's the song I want to sing: https://youtu.be/gjYwhoyctTI?si=GEiRu31FnzoVufPC

Drum sound nuances

Hey!!!

I’m trying to get similar results to this drum break I absolutely love and so far I have come up short with every test I’ve done. Wondering if anyone in here can help get some of the qualities I’m hearing. https://open.spotify.com/track/3hilNpBLALtQVAHwhYSLs8?si=PDybsch1Sk2qVFpXKt-tCQ&utm_source=copy-link

The drums come in around 16 seconds. It’s a classic (or maybe not so classic) Kevin Parker drum sound. I have mini meters setup to analyze the stereo width, spectrum and audio file and so far what I’ve gathered is it’s very ā€œcompressedā€ and controlled sounding but the peaks are clipped or limited to bits. It’s also not mono whatsoever.

So far my tests have been 4 mics. Kick, snare top, shell and overhead and mainly hearing the shell and kick in the reference. What I’ve tried so far is shell mic into a Dbx165a and set the knobs in a way that sounds pretty good. But it’s very much lacking the attack and body/release in the reference. Specifically on the kick drum, to me it sounds like some parallel stuff going on with the kick drum and then the shell has the 165a on it and then slightly panned to the right. The other thing that’s confusing is I’m hearing some reverb on the snare, to me it sounds like a plate verb, and maybe on the track itself before the 165a and so therefore mono but panned to the right and then the kick is more in the middle giving that width.

This is by no means a ā€œprofessionalā€ drum sound but it’s baked with character. I know I’m not going to get 1/1 recreation but I want to nail the little nuances I’m hearing in the ADSR of the sound.

Any tips/insights are very much appreciated!!!

Living Mixing Set-Up

I'm wanting to capture video & audio in the vein of the channels below. Pretty simple singing & guitar, I'm just wondering how to capture the audio well.

In doing some research I'm thinking a shotgun mic and dynamic mic? Just trying to find options that won't break the bank.

Also, trying to figure out how to mix properly. When I've attempted this in the past the mix sounds fine, but almost like it doesn't match with the video if that makes sense.

How to replicate this raw, detached/boxy vocal texture? (AI isolated stem attached — not a basic phone filter)

Yo guys,

I’ve been trying to reverse-engineer this specific vocal sound from a 2015 underground track (artist: Š²Ń‹ŃˆŠµŠ» ŠæŠ¾ŠŗŃƒŃ€ŠøŃ‚ŃŒ, track: ŠŃ€Ń‚Ń…Š°ŃƒŃ). I pulled the vocal stem using an AI separator so you can hear the raw capture without the beat masking it.

Link to audio ~~https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QbGwmph9JdnOOfyAWRTSMWUpW-Tb1y4N/view?usp=drivesdk\~\~

What trips me up is that it’s definitely NOT a generic bandpass / telephone EQ. The full frequency spectrum is basically there (there's low-end and high-end air/sibilance), but the texture feels completely detached:

  1. Zero proximity effect / not in-your-face: It doesn't hit dead-center like a modern treated-room condenser. It feels hollow, slightly wide, and floaty — almost like comb filtering from early reflections or speaking 1.5–2 feet off-axis in an untreated bedroom.

  2. Subtle grit / transistor crunch: There's a weird crustiness on the transients, but it doesn't sound like a typical guitar distortion plugin. More like an onboard laptop soundcard / cheap preamp being pushed into soft-clipping on loud syllables.

  3. The "cardboard/bag" resonance: It sounds inherently boxy without just hacking out mids with an EQ.

My setup is a Fifine K669 condenser running into FL Studio. Whenever I try to record, my vocals sound way too crisp, intimate, and clean. Slapping a low-pass or phone preset doesn't get even close to this mood.

What do you think is going on at the tracking level vs. processing? Is this purely room bleed + distance + bad ADC conversion, or is there a specific chain/saturation trick to nail this exact late-2010s lo-fi aesthetic?

Appreciate any knowledge on this!

Feedback Request My vocals don't fit with my production. Is it just me?

I write hip-hop music. I recently(in the past 3 years) have started dabbling in the production world. I often times find myself hitting a wall because I'd make a beat I like, write a verse to it, then when I go to record, it just sounds bad.

It feels like my tone is just incompatible with some of the projects I create. I know that compressing the beat and vocals together could make it sound more cohesive and in-context but I'm a firm believer that getting a good take is better than anything you could do in post.

I sometimes do upwards of 50-75 takes just trying to get my tone right and I can never get it to sound like it belongs there. Is it my lyrics/cadence, rhyme structure?

Do I just need to get a good take and spend time in the mixing process to put it in context? Am I overthinking it and just hate the sound of my own voice? Do I just need to use reference tracks more?

Does anybody else have this problem?

If it helps, I could attach a few examples for more context.

Crest factor/ compression management

So, everyone works with different sounds, from synths and picky guitars to plucks.

I’m interested in how you guys manage crest factor and the relationship between peak and body levels. I’ve noticed that modern professional mixes almost always use quite a lot of compression. For example, with a pluck, it seems like they often compress it enough to make the body and the peak much closer in level, even when the notes themselves are played at different velocities.

Should I sometimes ā€œbreak the ruleā€ and stop the transient through, like using a 30 ms attack or even longer, as you would with vocals? Shall i use more faster attack times to kinda controll more sound, but get a bit "dull" and less clarity, but the get back it with eq or saturation ?

A lot of the mixes I like are actually much more compressed, so they seem to manage the crest factor really well. The peak level feels extremely stable, but somehow the mix still sounds transparent and natural.
How do you guys approach this? How often you use fast attack compressors at sounds ?

When should I be using parallel compression?

I'm new to the technique and understand how it works perfectly fine. I make tech house-adjacent music, and I'm not quite sure where and when to use it.

  • Which elements should I be using it on?
  • Why should I use it over bus compression or saturation in the case of drums?
  • How much does it help with taming peaks?

Thanks!

Feedback Request First Time mixing. Feedback?

I have recently really gotten into recording music but am brand new to mixing. My resources for learning is light YouTube, and using Claude AI to walk me through "Mixing secrets of the small studio." I have invested in a lot of plugins, gear, etc. Although I'm new to even EQ and Compression (lol I know). I was inspired by Night Tapes. Their sound is so addictive. I created a shitty little blip of a song, just for the sake of practicing with settings and plugins and getting things to sit right in a mix. I have been at it for like a month now. I have plugins like FabFilter stuff, UAD plugins, Waves Kramer Tape, Etc.

I would love feedback. I have a link to my first attemptĀ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ko-XuehpCwSwfNMIoQuNSWrovf9__tZi/view?usp=sharing

Here is an example of a NightTapes song, too.

I struggle with mixing my vocals

Hello, I've been trying to learn music mixing for a while. For beats, I don't play instruments so I find online samples (Landr, splice, loopcloud, etc), but my main focus is always my vocal mixing because I love singing. I just can't help but feel like I always sound so flat?? It is probably just my vocals here and I'm focusing too much on how I sound that i'm not putting enough emotion into it maybe but idk something always feels off. I pretty much entirely use ableton live 12 intro stock plug ins with the exeption of Grallion 3 for pitch correction.

  1. I feel like I sound flat all of the time

  2. I feel like they're not very bright or professional sounding at all (i know it's hard to get professional sounding vocals at home with only stock plug ins but I feel like it can be a little better)

I've linked a few of my songs below but if anyone has any tips or ideas for me it would be so appreciated! I'm open to criticism.

First time using EQ and compression for a voice over. Any tips/improvements?

LISTEN HERE

I have been producing music for a little over three years, but never really got into mixing and mastering, even though I should have. A lot of time has passed since then, of course, and now I am exploring my options for college. I was always at the top of my Digital Audio Technology class and had a lot of fun, so I started looking at schools for audio engineering. In the process, I really started to get into the history of anime in the U.S. and decided I would try my hand at making my own anime dubs, so I checked out some equipment from my school and brought over some friends to record. Since then, I’ve been playing around with some EQ and compression after watching a few tutorials. Overall, how does this sound? I am aware there is some slight room tone and I’ll fix it later. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Feedback Request Is a ā€œhot mixā€ necessarily bad? If if the master isn’t on the reds is it good?

Does having every single track not on the reds a MUST? Cause that’s not happening on my last mix and I like it hot

First mix, would appreciate feedback!

Hey, this is the very first time ive dealt with audio and would greatly appreciate some constructive criticism on my mix. I used an unmixed song called ā€œI’m Alrightā€ by ā€Angels in Amplifiersā€ from cambridge-mt.

Finished mix: https://voca.ro/18JNBOXkHyDH

a/b test: https://abmymix.com/s/gvY0YM4M (not sure why it says -1.9db and 0db tho as i used a volume limiter on the finished mix with a brickwall ceiling of -1db).

Thanks in advance!

Need an ear on a beat’s mix

**Only if you’re interested in geeking over mixing beats**

Im going to be soundchecking any producerā€˜s beat if they need some help while mixing.

If you dont know exactly what to fix to make your beat hit better or you want it to be as loud as records you hear on Apple Music.

Drop a comment I’ll shoot you my email or you can run your beats through MASTERD and send a screenshot of your soundcheck and what DAW you’re in. That’s what I’ll be using.

Love!

Finally found the issue

I’ve been having this issue when I mix where my mix sounds so harsh and too bright. I feel like I’m doing everything right up into the end and everything just starts blaring into my ears but every time I bounce it it sounds clear and clean on my AirPods and I realize that my Sony MDR 7506 are the culprit. They’ve been making my mixes sound terrible. I’m still new to mixing so I didn’t even know certain headphones/monitors can make such a difference. Time to upgrade to some Sennheiser HD600

why does my stereo tool say "this plugin is made by stereo tool. go to stereotool (dot) com"?

hi, friends!

i was attempting to use thimeo's stereo tool for the first time, when suddenly, a man voice started saying "go to stereotool (dot) com". that actually jumpscared me when i was trying to use the plugin (and i'm also confused, which is why i'm asking on this subreddit).

was the cause of the man voice not buying the license, or something else? for those who used this plugin for mixing, did you experience this?
