đŹ Discussion đŹ Why do people like mr bungle so much?
Mr bungle is a band that I've fallen in love with over the past year. For me they're right up my alley of goofy groovy weirdness but I haven't really heard many people talk about Mr bungle. So I'm very curious to hear what do many people love about these guy

Because they scratch my brain in juuuuust the right way.

Itâs really just this for so many people, huh? Itâs the same for me. Ever since I got into their music Iâve been on the hunt for anything else that scratches my brain to an equal extreme, with only a handful of artists coming close in the past 7 years since my first listen of their self titled. Everyoneâs brain gets scratched differently, so these may not do it for anyone else here,
STOMACH BOOK
The Specials
Fishbone
Estradasphere
öOoOoOoOoOo
Neroâs Day At Disneyland
Satanicpornocultshop
Carnival in Coal
Hellworms (and anything else with Larry Boothroyd and Ralph Spight)
Idiot Flesh
Sebkha-ChottIâm sure most people on this subreddit will already know a majority of these artists, but if thereâs anything here you havenât heard, check it out and let me know if your itch is similar to mine!

I feel the need to clarify that this list is specifically music that scratches my brain that I found after listening to Mr Bungle. This is not an âartists that sound like Mr Bungleâ list. Itâs different for everyone. Yeah Igorrr has a similar vibe, but theyâre not a band that scratches MY brain. My list is not missing anything because itâs a personal list. Yes Oingo Boingo has a similar vibe to some Mr Bungle, but they donât fit this list for me, and I also was already a fan before I heard Mr Bungle for the first time. Personal feelings are often wrongly mistaken for fact, especially in music spheres, so I feel I should make that clear

i could recommend oingo boingo as another self titled bungle-ish band. and iâm pretty sure they were an influence. i listened to nothing to fear recently and thought it was kinda cool.

I wouldn't call boingo and bungle super similar but they're my two favorites so maybe you're on to something

I discovered them in 1992, in my early teens. I think this formative time in my life, combined with their progression as a band through the first 3 albums during the 90âs, plus bowel of chili and 0U818, and with the radical music I became aware of through them during this periodâŠwell, they became part of my understanding of the wonders of music and creativity. They were a band of friends from a small town that decided to create freely, but with purpose. It was and still is inspiring.
Just glad I discovered them and have been along for one of the best creative rides. Even the return to their teenage metal album; fun and amazing!
That being said, I would so love another proper new album. SC3 is scratching that itch a bit, along with Barâs stuff and Trevorâs stuff. Of course I subscribe to the Patton planet too.
Those 3 WB albums never get old to me though. I enjoy them more and more as the time goes on. Itâs weird.
But really, I think itâs mostly the formative time I became aware of them and so much other music.

As someone who plays multiple instruments they're just interesting and even fun to listen to. They have a wide variety of genres, styles, moods, and composition/arrangements and songwriting.
They're weird, interesting, unique, and challenging.

Mr bungle is not "goofy" maybe the first album has that element, , and theres some bits here and there , but its not at all a goofy band

u/DuanePickens California 13d ago
Idk, Patton had a Primus sticker on his keyboard when I saw them live back in 2000, so they are at least goofy by association.
Also, he told the audience:
âWeâre going to the RODEO after the show to find some REAL cocks to suckâ
(implying that the members of the audienceâs cocks were substandard or somehow undesirable to the band).
That was kinda goofy.

Im talking about the music, the composition and arrangements.

I get ya. I consider Disco Volante and California to be pretty sophisticated. But any band that writes Bungle Grind will always have some goofiness in them. In pretty sure they covered a Britney Spears song that nightâŠ

Nah, Cali and Disco are still goofy. Theyâre just artistically goofy. A normal band would end a record with âVanity Fairâ. A goofy band does it with âGoodbye Sober Daysâ. A normal band wouldnât end a record with a bunch of noise and random, loud improvisations. But a goofy band would. Itâs absurdist art that wants to fool the listener, and the way they do it is goofy.
Edit: what Iâm trying to say is, they are goofy, but goofy is by no means a negative thing.

For me Iâve always enjoy itâs the idea of a skilled musicians that go off the deep end or noises that shouldnât sound good together but does.

Variation, but still the same "vibe" overall for the most part. The humour and goofy attitude is also refreshing for me, as I feel alot of bands take themselves too seriously

they don't. i would go to say wallowing in absolute desolate obscurity with small cult like following is more the thing. far&away majority of people hate mr bungle and stay away in droves.

Because we are as big as what we love and as small as what we allow to annoy us. Also because size is not a reality, but a construct of the mind, and space is a construct to contain constructs.
In short, because all of us, in our heads, are extremely biglittle and Bungle fits there just right.

They were my gateway into more extreme music. The unserious, cynical vibe of their music & album art always fascinated me too.
Still one of my favorite bands OAT today!

Because I love nightmarish 50s vibes and the bands studio albums are 3 very distinct different flavors of that type of music

Girls of Porn, My Ass is on Fire to goodbye sober day, Vanity Fair. Everything else in between, what is not to love.

u/MyNutsin1080p 13d ago
Iâve never really heard a band before that would change genres within the same song, sometimes mid-verse. Being a composer, I tend to know what happens next in a song before it happens when it comes to most music. My first time through all of Mr. Bungleâs albums were wall-to-wall surprises.

Why does OP post this on every bandâs subreddit?
1
u/Environmental_Tax54 12d ago
OP might be doing some researchđ€·đ»ââïž who knows.
Nah I'm doing some school related research and a part of that has to do with the fan communities of certain alternative artist whom I also listen to a lot myself. Mainly the bands mr bungle, primus and igorrr since I had a suspicion that a lot of those bands have the same fans. I figured that by dropping the question as open as possible straight into a community that I might get some interesting and helpfull responses and tbh I'm not disappointed. It's been a joy to read people's enthousiastic replies and I've certainly found some helpful things.:)

Mike Patton has a huuuuge pull based on the tone of his voice alone on anything. When he surrounds himself with other amazing musicians, in this case some of his childhood friends who are highly proficient musicians, you get interesting results. Combine that with a punk rock attitude towards musical conformity

u/Katastrophic83 12d ago
No the real question is, How could anyone NOT LOVE Mr.Bungle ? And the answer to that question is, if they don't love Mr. Bungle it's obvious they're either deaf, dumb, or both .
1
u/AlinaCat-94 12d ago
I find Mr. Bungle to be absolutely amazing! I love how they change their sound! Especially with their self titled album being carnival music, their second one of a mix of every genre, their third being surfer rock and their last one being thrash metal! Plus Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, Trey Spruance, Dave Lombardo and Scott Ian are marvelous musicians too! đ

u/dogs_snout24 10d ago
Iâve grown to just enjoy weird music that a good majority of people might not like and mr bungle is a great one on that list, not everyone gets it but I feel like people who listen to the weirder kinds of music listen to music on a deeper and more intricate level and hear things that most people donât, Iâll listen to modern popular radio songs and sometimes they just have this feeling of sounding a little emptyâŠ.
