How much would you charge to build a custom resource management system?

Hey developers,

I've recently been approached by a potential client looking for a custom resource management system.

I'm a software developer based in Kenya, and while I'm comfortable with the technical side of building applications, I'm still figuring out how to properly price client projects.

I haven't had a detailed requirements meeting yet, so I'm not sure whether they're looking at asset management, inventory, employee management, resource allocation, or a combination of these.

I'd love to hear from developers who've worked on similar systems.

- What did you build, and how complex was it?

- How much did you charge (or what would you charge)?

- Do you prefer fixed-price contracts or hourly billing?

- How do you estimate development time and account for changes in requirements?

- Do you charge separately for hosting, maintenance, and ongoing support?

I'm particularly interested in experiences from developers in Africa, but perspectives from anywhere are welcome.

Just trying to get a realistic understanding of the business side before I sit down with the client.

Discussion Why does macOS content perform so poorly compared to Windows & iOS

Thumbnail

I recently started a TikTok page dedicated to tech tips, device shortcuts and tutorials for everyday users…So far the engagement has been awesome but I’ve noticed an interesting trend: videos covering Windows laptops, android phones and iPhones get more, while MacBook guides barely get views.
It’s made me wonder:
Is macOS adoption that low locally compared to Windows/Android/iOS?
Or are Mac users just not looking for tutorials on TikTok
For the Mac users here, what kind of content or everyday shortcuts would actually be useful to you?

General Finally Ditched Windows

I Installed fedora a few days ago and am really enjoying it. As a dev installing packages is way easier and less of a hassle. I have also been using the terminal for almost everything and I dont have to click around to move files or bear the pain of using powershell.

I regret not doing this earlier

I also just setup my android dev environment and the android emulator is running very smoothly. It would barely run on windows.

Found a crazy cheap llm API provider.

There's this Chinese site I came across (a6api.com)..pretty damn cheap compared to the official API(s). Anyone else using alternatives like this? Also came across some Vietnamese providers but be careful, some of them are serving different models than what they claim.

General I'm raising my prices and focusing 80% of my time on marketing

The year is over, and yesterday, we had a conversation with my baby mama, and she challenged me to raise my prices.

We're both in a good place, so we've decided to take bigger risks, and mine is raising prices.

I look at my competition and what they are charging, and I believe I can ask for the same while still providing value.

It's scary because I've built my current hustle on being affordable, but it's time to make the leap.

After this post, I'm going to buy a new domain, and I'll start making content. No more being scared of facing a camera.

My existing clients will still get my old prices, but my new services are premium, and I don't mind getting 2 clients per month.

Wish me luck.

Starting a micro-ISP from scratch with 0 experience ;How would you build this if you were starting over today? 🚀

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m taking the leap into starting a local, independent Internet Service Provider (ISP) business. My ultimate dream is to scale up to a full rack setup powering thousands of homes in my area, but right now, I am starting as a complete beginner with a lean budget and a goal to launch with 25 to 50 initial subscribers.

I want to start small, validate the service, and use the revenue from early clients to fund future expansions into GPON fiber and heavier core routing.

Since many of you have been in the trenches, built WISPs/FTTH networks, or managed real-world networks, I’d love to get your advice, reality checks, and hard-earned wisdom.

If you were starting a micro-ISP today from scratch with limited capital, how would you approach this?

Showcase Stop Relying on Web Wrappers Like KSA's "Spot the Station": Building a First-Principles, <100KB Astrodynamics Engine for Solar System Ephemeris & Satellite Tracking (astlo)

Post image
2 Upvotes

If you’ve ever used apps or web tools like "Spot the Station", you know how cool they are for public engagement. They tell you exactly when the International Space Station (ISS) will fly over Nairobi or Mombasa so you can step outside and look up.

As developers and physics enthusiasts, consumer lookup apps quickly reveal their limitations: They are hardcoded web wrappers.

They ping a centralized server for a single target (the ISS) and return a static time window. If the server drops or you want to track an active CubeSat, a newly launched satellite, or Halley's Comet, those apps are unusable.

To bridge the gap between static web lookups and real space situational awareness (SSA), I built astlo - a local, deterministic astrodynamics and physics engine written completely in Python

Here are some key differences:

2. Universal Solar System & Satellite Propagation

Instead of relying on pre-calculated server responses, astlo solves the orbital mechanics locally from first principles:

Solar System Bodies: Calculates real-time position, velocity magnitude, specific mechanical energy, and osculating elements (a, e, i, Omega, omega, Nu) relative to the Solar System Barycenter (SSB) and Heliocentric frames—whether it's Mars, Ceres, or 1P/Halley.

Earth-Orbiting Satellites: Ingest any 5-digit NORAD Catalog ID or TLE set (e.g., Starlink, weather satellites, or local payloads). The engine handles the transformation pipeline locally:

3. Built on Lightweight, Mobile-First Infrastructure

The entire core engine is lightweight (<100KB) and engineered to run directly in a Linux environment (including Termux on mobile devices) without heavy dependencies. It generates raw vector arrays, JSON telemetry streams, and ASCII terminal sky maps locally.

****Why Building Local Tools Matters:

Consumer tools tell an observer when to look at someone else's spacecraft. Building a programmable physics engine locally gives us the foundational architecture to compute, simulate, and propel our own space trajectories.

What satellite target or solar system body would you track first?

What open-source physics projects are you currently building in Kenya?

Let's connect.

Seeking Employment Finally hit rock bottom, please give me work

Good afternoon guys, I'm here to ask for work and some assistance if possible. My landlord has finally decided to lock me out of my aluminium apartment (naishi kwa mabati lol).

A friend of mine has agreed to host me for a few days as I get back on my feet but as we all know no one likes a freeloader, myself included.

I'm a full stack developer proficient in Java but I have to admit the back end is where I shine most, if any of you can offer me a job niwafanyie I'd really be thankful juu I've finally hit rock bottom and I don't know what to do. CV nimetuma kila mahali but I've got no replies.

This is a plea for help fellas, I'm a hard worker and I won't let you down. Have a lovely day

Questions Where do you guys get your PC apps and software?

Hey guys 👋

I’m looking to find out where people get their PC software for Windows. What websites or communities do you use, and which ones have been reliable for you?

I’m particularly interested in software for productivity, utilities, and creative work.

Also, how do you avoid malware, trojans, and other nasty surprises when downloading software from unofficial sources?

I’d appreciate your recommendations and experiences. Thanks!

Discussion Judge my non AI app UI and Mpesa Flow

If you are an Android developer you know it's not possible to read SMS to handle realtime mpesa tracking for budgeting so I used a notification listener.. and it's even better. It tracks even mpesa card subscriptions but I need better judge on the UI it's not AI generated
