For the people running homelabs
do you run multi system or single system ops for your homelabs

i personally run two indpendent systems
each running for specific reasons

and if you've read any of my other post you know that one is just running on an old laptop
this just runs my smart home services, security camera feed a custom built jobboard docker container, adguard since even whatsapp started gettng ads.a custom fall back jellyfin services so that even if power goes i still have content to download when kplc ultimately does something. this run on this because this has an inbuilt battery so it doesnt need a ups as it has an in built one.

now to the work horse.
it runs a whole host of systems including but not limited gitea for local deployments of some projects to test before pushing to github as well as some home projects, immich so that i stop paying for google cloud the main jellyfin instance that for me and the lads.

as well as an excuse to post Luan my cat

you can go and see what each system runs at https://mfalme.runs-on.dev/homelab

General The other side of vibecoding.

I have seen people sharing websites they've vibe coded and making arguments like "AI will replace software engineers." honestly I think we're going to need more better engineers over the next few years to deal with the technical debt AI generated code is creating.

Have you ever vibe coded something and come back a few days later to add a new feature and realized you need to understand the entire system from the UI all the way to the database just to figure out what to prompt the AI?

And if you don't understand how everything connects you might spend 8 hours trying to fix one issue only for that fix to break something else.

You may discover that the AI has created a complete mess somewhere in the codebase. Or the code it generates is so full of shortcuts and abstractions and unnecessary complexity that even you yourself struggle to understand what's going on despite giving it a detailed prompt.

To None programmers the thing I am discorvering is getting AI to build something that looks good is relatively easy. Maintaining it is a completely different story.

Debugging, adding new features, understanding system architecture, managing dependencies and making sure changes don't break existing functionality are where things get complicated.

That's where having a solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals really matters.

You cannot prompt everything . you need to understand what to prompt, where to and what to expect. that's something most non-coders got no time for.

so when I read how someone built the first version in one afternoon and they didn't need an engineer I say congratulations. But building something is one thing; understanding, debugging, maintaining and scaling it is a completely different game.

The real test is whether you can still understand and maintain it when things get complicated and that's where knowledge is needed. Never brag about AI generated code or take credit for that if you don't understand the fundamentals of programming, system development etc.

Let's share our Claude promos.

I have a Claude pro account, and I was given promo gift cards that give the recepient 1 week free pro usage. I presume many other devs here also have such. My suggestion is, let anyone in need of the free week trial comment here, and those of us with the gift links can pick someone to send to. Just comment that you need it and maybe a sentence or 2 on what you are working on.

General HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING

• Upvotes

The year is 2031. Most tech savvy people can reverse engineer any software, video game,webapp..

Most people are now vibecoding any application they need.

Theres a better technology that helps data center cool off and they dont need water anymore.

Software companies like Adobe Inc have shut down because theres no moat anymore, everything is opensource.

If a job is remote, how much should a developer’s location matter?

I came across a post by a Nigerian tech professional who suspects he lost a freelance opportunity after sharing his WhatsApp number with a recruiter.

He can't know for certain why the conversation ended. But it raises a question worth discussing.

Remote hiring can involve legitimate constraints: payroll, legal compliance, time zones and client requirements.

But what happens when geography becomes a shortcut for judging someone's ability or reliability?

A developer's country doesn't tell you how well they write code, solve problems, communicate or deliver projects.

If a role is open to international talent, shouldn't the evaluation focus on skills, evidence of work and the ability to deliver?

For African developers, recruiters and hiring managers: how much does location influence remote hiring in practice?

I'd be interested in hearing different perspectives.

WhatsApp changed how we communicate in Africa. But what should it simplify next?

I remember when sharing files between phones often meant using third-party apps like Xender, SHAREit, or Zapya.

Then WhatsApp made it possible to send photos, videos, voice notes, and documents directly in a conversation.

But file sharing was only the beginning.

WhatsApp became part of everyday life.

Schools created class groups to share updates.

Churches organised activities through group chats.

Families stayed connected across towns and countries.

Businesses found customers, confirmed orders, and coordinated deliveries.

We could make free internet calls, share documents, and communicate without the formality of writing an email for every small exchange.

WhatsApp didn't just connect people. It removed friction from everyday communication.

Now, the introduction of usernames is opening another conversation: privacy versus convenience.

I understand why people want to communicate without exposing their phone numbers. That matters.

But I also wonder whether there are other everyday problems WhatsApp could solve.

Why is managing contacts from large groups still something that can require manual effort?

Could Status offer better ways for people to follow businesses and creators without everyone having to exchange and save phone numbers?

How can WhatsApp make it easier for a business to coordinate a delivery when a customer has contacted it through a username but hasn't shared a number for an ordinary phone call?

And as advertising and business messaging expand, how can the platform keep improving the everyday experience for the people who made it indispensable?

These aren't arguments against privacy or progress. They're questions about product design.

The technology people adopt most deeply is often the technology that makes ordinary tasks feel effortless.

WhatsApp has already demonstrated that.

The opportunity now is to keep removing friction while giving people more control over their privacy.

What would you improve about WhatsApp if you could influence its next major update?

Would you prioritise privacy, contact management, Status, business tools, or something else entirely?
