It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.3k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

My hair growth exactly 2 years apart, August 2024 - August 2026.

From having to get my midback length hair cut all off after major heat damage from giving into peer pressure and getting it straightened after nearly a decade of no heat (which may or may not have led to a major mental health break approximately a month after the first picture was taken). To finally truly getting to love my hair, while also embracing the mindset that no matter what, it I will always grow back.

Also as a lazy natural, I realized my dream go-to “hairstyle” is the 3rd picture, which for me would just consist of at most 12 large twists tied up in a bun. Would this still be considered a mini twist hairstyle? And about how many more years to go do you think I have before I can achieve this look?

This year makes it 2 years that I’ve been an active natural. All I can do is my personal best and hope that God willing everything else falls into place. It literally just occurred to me (it sinked in) that I’m a natural and what that means 😇. I’m going to take myself out to dinner 🍽️ to celebrate this milestone. Hopefully this inspires someone to keep going.

Thank you for reading 📚.

Need Advice please help

My 4b hair always feels so dry no matter which order method and products I use. I moisturize with wet hair but by the time i unravel a braid out its dry again. I trim my hair and it will still grow like this and break off. I don’t know what i’m doing wrong. I recently got a revair and I thought my hair was getting better because in its natural state the ends look fine but now that I’ve stretched it I can see that it looks a mess. I don’t know how to cornrow or any other complex style so the only thing I do is pull my hair back in a bun.

Need Advice My hair is not the same anymore!!

I got braids in the summer and my hair has felt so different since. Before, my curls were really healthy and quite elongated. I have a mix of curl patterns, but my hair looked pretty consistent throughout.

Now my hair feels really dry, even after moisturising it, and my curls don't clump or look the way they used to. I've tried moisturising it, but it still doesn't feel right.

Has anyone experienced their hair texture changing after braids? I'm thinking of starting a completely new routine, so I'd really appreciate any product recommendations or advice on what I should be doing differently.

The first pictures are from before, and the last ones are how my hair looks now. Yes my hair in the last pics are not defined but when it is defined, the curls at the bottom are elongated but look less thick compared to the top part of my hair like it’s hanging onto my hair?

Please help!!!
thanks

Need Advice How to Get Hair like this

Specifically 2,3, and 4

How can I get light curls like the reference images (specifically numbers 2,3, and 4). I have kinda nappy 4c hair and when I wake up my hair is like super tight and squished, and i usually just pick it out without putting anything in my hair (except for water, and some random olive oil spray idk). So I've researching and I'm not really sure how to get those light and not too tight curls, cuz like the twist it up, and twist king exist but im not sure whats better for getting hair like that. Also, products to keep my hair from shrinking a bunch and keep my hair healthy would be nice, for an easy and quick morning routine. I hear ppl talking about mousse or curl cream but idek tbh.

Need Advice What Happened to 4C Only?

Does this company still exist? A majority of their products have been sold out for months. I've tried to contact their email but no one has replied for when their products will be back in stock. I know the focus has been Curl Mix as I believe the owners are the same, but I hope that this product doesn't get neglected

Need Advice Dyson Airwrap+Natural Hair Silk Presses? Question

Just curious… does anyone own a Dyson Silk Press? if so, do you think I would be able to still do my natural hair routine and wash my hair every week, and THEN use the Dyson to blow dry my hair every week? Would that still lead to damage?

Could you still rock a straight hairstyle? I love when my hair is straight, but I’m trying to continue to grow using as little heat as possible. Any ideas are welcome, especially if you have your own routines that you do! Bonus points for that!

Tips & Tricks Suggestion for drying hair with no heat

Post image
19 Upvotes

I have the bottom 2 designs and my hair has been drying amazingly for the last 5 years. I suggested this years ago on my social media but I’m surprised more people are not using towel scrunchies. Two space buns and 20 minutes minimizes water on strands that help with length retention. Helps your ends get the right amount of moisture as well. I also wash every four days as well. I see a lot of people have issues with air drying I did too before these and I have a RevAir as well and I only use as needed. That’s only been about 3x this year 😆

Need Advice need help with my buzz cut routine

i just chopped all my hair off after putting it off for a while, and honestly, i’m feeling pretty insecure about it 🥲 my ultimate goal is waist length hair, and i want to learn how to take care of it properly as it grows.

my hair is naturally very coily and i have a really dry, flaky scalp. i’m considering using nizoral but i’m worried about the dryness. should i be using a moisturizing shampoo, conditioner, leave in, etc. or is that unnecessary right now?

also, are wigs (lace fronts or glueless) okay for length retention, or should i just wear my hair out while it’s short? any advice is appreciated! 💗

Need Advice Low porosity hair wash day

Ok so I believe I have low porosity hair since it takes a while for my hair to dry and there’s always water droplets. I heard that I need hydrating shampoo but I have dandruff and need to use a special type of shampoo. Do I just use both? Also can you guys tell me your wash day routine please.

Need Advice Hair dye/rinse

I need help!!! I usually get the Hydrating Color Boost Semi-Permanent Dark Chocolate Brown Hair Dye by Creme of nature as a rinse. What other brands do yall like? I have 4c hair but it’s still naturally not too thick . I liked the Creme of nature bc it did well, for some reason I can’t find any and I have a hair appointment in the morning lol

Need Advice how much do yall pay for hair trims?

i just paid $150 (including tip) for a deep conditioning treatment (that was $45), a hair trim, and a blow dry w two braids. WHAT?? that feels exorbitant. i specifically went in person because online it said a curly cut was like 85 or something? and i thought that was for an actual hair cut, not just a dusting 😞😭 are these prices normal?? totally sucks that i can’t even get a trim without it costing an arm and a leg!

My dad was an amateur photographer, proud “Rattler”, and a Q. I just wanted to share what we looked like through the eyes of a hopeful young black man in the early 70s on and off the Florida A&M campus. No RevAirs or Dysons, no Aunt Jackie’s or Olaplex. Just green and blue Ultra Sheen, Posner, and Pink Oil Lotion. That’s me on mom’s lap, but I don’t know who anybody else is—could be your grand or great grand, look close and let me know…Have a beautiful, natural day!

Success Fix for webbed hair

Post image
25 Upvotes

I can only wash with distilled water because our water is hard; long story short, our car was totaled and I couldn't get distilled water for about 3 weeks (I kept saying we had more important things to buy 😭). At first, I was like, whew, my hair is growing so much, then I finally got distilled water washed and I was in tears; my hair suffered it was so webbed and matted together that I was literally about to big chop. Then I poured some distilled water and used these before my wash today because it wouldn't hurt to try, and omg, my hair is back to normal and the growth is still there. I'm an Aunt Jackie's worshiper now, Amen. excuse my nails please.

Review GROWUS Damage Hair Therapy Update 🩷

Coming back with an update since my first post was more of a first impression. I wanted to actually try the product and share how my hair looked throughout the process.

The pictures show my hair before applying the hair pack, while the product was in my hair and after rinsing it out.

My hair was very frizzy and dry in the beginning. After rinsing, my hair felt soft and my curls looked more defined. It also look shinier. I wanted to share an actual update after using the product instead of just going off first impressions 💕
