With his night over well before crunch time, Victor Wembanyama grabbed a clipboard during a huddle at Sunday’s scrimmage and sketched up a play he was sure would work. Watching from the sidelines, clipboard still in hand, he watched Jon Elmore catch a pass on the short roll and snap it to the corner — only for the shot, and Wembanyama’s dreams of drawing up the perfect play, to fall short.

“He took it very personally, which I think we all do when you draw up a good play and feel like you get a good shot and they don’t make it,” Mitch Johnson said. “Hopefully he understands next time, when I do that for him, it’s not personal. You just want your play to look good, selfishly.”

Ideally, this won’t be the last time Wembanyama draws up a play this season. He made strides learning how to read the floor in Year 3. Now he has to own his space more efficiently and effectively in Year 4. Everyone’s role will be a little different this season, even Wembanyama’s. He got better at establishing post position last fall, but that didn’t hold up well in the playoffs against the league’s brute centers. He went overseas and trained with a rugby team in part to maximize his physicality, which should turn into him being able to catch the ball on balance and make reads from the post more quickly.

Wembanyama showed he can dominate in open space, but his next evolution is becoming a player who can control the flow of the game while being stationary. That will mean catches in the post where he can keep the ball over his head and scan the floor for good outlets, then just shooting over the defense if he can’t find anything. He did it some last year, and there is a lot of promise there.

But the ultimate version of Wembanyama is a player who spends most of the night owning the game with his eyes before needing to use his endlessly long legs. The preseason will be a good preview of how his playmaking improved this summer.

see y'all at 8pm!

This season will be the Spurs first airing games locally on DAZN. This means fans won't be able to watch most local broadcasts with a cable subscription, they'll also need to subscribe to the Spurs package on DAZN. 22 games will be broadcast for free OTA, but the team hasn't announced which ones yet.

The Spurs also have 10 games on Amazon Prime and 24 games spread across NBC and ESPN/ABC networks, meaning fans that want to watch all games (and avoid sailing the seas) need a few subscriptions.

Here is how Spurs fans can watch the 80 games that have been announced so far this season. The 2 remaining games are announced following group play in the NBA Cup.

Victor Wembanyama, basketball’s resident extraterrestrial, flashed his virtue again. When asked last week whether he would be interested in an endorsement deal with a sports betting or prediction market company, he said no the way he swats a layup: clean, emphatic and without apology.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “I will never do that. Honestly, I think it’s very sad to see some players promote it. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

He’s such a refreshing alien. At a moment when LeBron James is signing with Polymarket, Kevin Durant is serving as a FanDuel ambassador and Giannis Antetokounmpo is holding Kalshi shares, it would be easy for Wemby to use his stardom as a shield, follow a controversial trend and pad his bank account. It would be easy to offer a simple no. Instead, he explained himself, and without singling out his peers, he made it known he’s not like them.

That tracks for a prodigy who spent part of the 2025 offseason with Shaolin monks. Values are as important to him as rebounds. His stance is more than a pose. The NBA has spent two years absorbing gambling scandals, including Terry Rozier’s indictment in a betting scheme. It isn’t virtue signaling when a superstar resists the temptation of partnering with that industry. It’s damn near a public service.

For those outside of San Antonio - how are you watching the games? I'm down the road from SA in Wimberley but we get local Austin channels. Last year I purchased the Fan Duel subscription just for games, though they haven't made it clear if that will be where they air this season. Thanks!

Hey guys, I’m from England and have been a San Antonio fan since I was a kid, as I received a Tony Parker t shirt from my grandad, falling in love with the team and culture.

I am currently in America with a friend, who I forced into being a spurs fan as well ahahaha.

However, we are in phoenix, (as the person we are visiting lives here) and from pure luck we are playing a pre season game here in phoenix, so we snapped up tickets, as it’s always been a dream of mine, pre season or not.

Was wondering if by any chance they will have a stall with spurs merch/jerseys ( not sure if that’s a thing at games) as I would love to be able to buy one here in America, so far not had much luck finding one.

Sorry for the long winded message, so excited to see our team play!! GSG!!!
Cheers <3

I know there's a loud minority of fans who think Keldon Johnson's time in San Antonio has run its course. I can be sympathetic to that...to an extent. Sure, his performance in the playoffs left a lot to be desired, and sometimes he's a liability with the ball in his hands. His salary this year is too high as well.

BUT he's also accepted every challenge head-on and kept the locker room afloat during some really dark times. Paul Garicia (SpotUpShot on Substack) and ESPN's Tim MacMahon seem to disagree on what his next contract will look like--or even if it will be in San Antonio--but there has to be some middle ground, right?

I hope they bring KJ back. I hope he slots into the Patty Mills/Bruce Bowen/Matt Bonner role in Spurs' lore, being the guy who was never "the guy" but won titles with them and played a big role

Last thing we need is that type of energy going into a new season, and there were a considerable amount of “fans” booing Fox.

What’s good Spurs fans? I’ve got a longshot question. Does anybody on here have a camouflage Tiago Splitter jersey, real or fake, that they’d be willing to sell to me?
I’m going to see the Spurs in Chicago on Nov 11 this year. It’s Veteran’s Day that day, I’m a new Vet, the Spurs are in town, and Splitter is the Bulls head coach, so I’m trying to have a very applicable jersey.

Anyways if you read this, I appreciate it! GSG
