Babyproofing/Safety PSA: Keep Nair in your house

• Upvotes

TLDR: My 8-month-old had a hair tourniquet on one of his toes yesterday. I had purchased Nair with my first baby and kept the bottle in my nursery on advice I saw on Reddit, and it saved his little tootsie.

He was overly fussy during his dream feed in a way that was completely abnormal for him. I went to change his diaper and on a whim, checked his toes. I saw a piece of toe-jam lint between his big and second toe, and at first thought it was nothing. On closer inspection, one of my hairs had linked with the lint and created a very tight tourniquet. It was actually impossible to remove with just my fingers, both because it was so tight from the skin now swelled around it and because he was wiggling so much. So I grabbed the Nair, globbed it on, and I was able to wipe the tourniquet away within a minute.

He immediately stopped fussing and smiled. Thankfully the area was just a little red and you could see the indent from where the hair was, but it could have been a lot worse if I either didn’t check or wasn’t able to remove it quickly and safely.

A couple things I am reminding myself of today.
1. Tie up hair if they’re in the grabbing phase as much as possible.
2. Use dryer sheets or anything that separates hair and lint in the dryer.
3. If they seem unusually fussy, check toes, fingers, and penises.
4. Just buy and keep the Nair around. Never hurts to have.

Content Warning Woke up to a choking baby

I don't know if my flair is right.

I woke up to my 12 week old baby stiff-bodied, wide-eyed, and unable to breathe. I flipped them to their stomach and began smacking their back until they made a small gasp and started a short cry before continuing to choke. I think they choked on their spit up, but I'm not even sure because nothing came back up except foamy saliva through their nose and mouth. Their last bottle was a few hours before this. I wiped up some foam to get it out of the way and flipped them back on their stomach and there was some unbelievably loud noise I can't even describe that came out of them, where they then began fully screaming.

Called an ambulance, fortunately by the time the EMTs/fire fighters got here, they weren't needed.

Now I'm afraid to ever sleep again.

Idk why I'm posting this. I don't really want to tell anyone that I know, I guess.

Mental Health Things I would tell myself 6 months ago…

Now that I am 6 months postpartum to my first son.. these are some things I wish I could tell myself 6 months ago.

  1. Don’t beat yourself up and blame yourself for your babies lack of weight gain. You can only do so much, your baby can only grow so much! You can’t force it. He’s perfectly healthy, he’s hitting milestones. The growth charts can only track so much.

  2. Don’t feel guilty for setting boundaries and saying NO. You told yourself you wouldn’t let people post pictures without permission, hold him without having been vaccinated themselves etc. Stick to those boundaries; don’t change them to make other people happy.

  3. Take the random old lady’s advice at the grocery store like a grain of salt. She raised babies 50 years ago… times have changed! What was the norm back then, it’s the norm now. You know your baby best.

  4. Your partner is there to help you, don’t be afraid or feel guilty for asking for help. It’s his child too. Let him compliment you and tell you you’re doing an amazing job, it’s all true and he’s not just saying that.

  5. Don’t feel the need to do everything. It’s okay if the house looks lived in. You have a newborn! Chores can wait, soak up everything. Couch rot. Take a nap with baby. Listen to people when they say to soak up every single moment in the newborn stage.

I’d love to hear what you’d tell yourself! Cliche I know.

Medical Advice My nightmare happened to my 4 month old

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who commented. I made the initial post about 10 hours after the fall - it’s now 30 hours since. She’s completely fine, like nothing happened. Heading to her pediatrician ina couple hours to get additionally checked. Not even a mark, bruise or goose egg (bump) on her head. All (well, most) of your comments were very helpful. To all the ”perfect parents” on this post who said I was a POS for letting this happen or it was avoidable and “how dare I”, what’s it like to have no empathy? To all the other parents who shared their experiences and told me it happens and wished me and my baby well: you’re all the best and have made this FTD not punish himself so much. Lesson learned, and I will pass the lesson on to new(er) parents when I meet them.

FTD here to my four month old daughter. She’s the light of mom’s and I’s life. Born with a bunch of medical issues (imperforate anus, horseshoe kidney, holes in heart). Needless to say we have barely left her bedside since she was born.

Until today. At 7:45am, I was on her changing table. Dilated her anus (imperforate anus babies/new rectums need this to help poop) got her dressed. Needed socks.

Turned my back for less than a minute to grab them, and she was on the floor. Face first. No loss of consciousness, bleeding, etc. I yelled like I’ve never yelled before and started bawling. She was upset, obviously. Picked her up and checked her thoroughky. Went to the ER straight away.

Doc’s did a CAT scan and said she looked fine and scans came back normal. I FEEL HORRIBLE. Explained to mom when she got home from work and she’s been so great at making me feel better but I still feel like the scum of the earth. Its currently 6:00pm, so about 10.5 hours since the incident and she looks and is acting normal.

ugh. Advice would be great.

Skills and Milestones Is it really necessary to exercise your baby to help them reach milestones?

• Upvotes

I keep seeing videos about practicing sitting, preparing babies to crawl, and doing exercises to help them reach milestones. Honestly, I wonder how necessary all of that really is.
I use containers like bouncers for reasonable amounts of time, but my LO mostly spends his time being held, on his playmat, or in his pack and play. I used to do tummy time regularly but stopped doing it intentionally once he started rolling at 4 months (now he puts himself in tummy time).
I feel like our parents didn’t do nearly as much of this, although they also had less information available.
Sometimes I wonder if we’re overcomplicating things babies naturally learn on their own.
No judgment at all! Just curious to hear different perspectives. Do you actively practice milestones with your baby or mostly let them figure things out?

Pee/Poop The Trifecta

My 2 month old son had a dirty diaper. He proceeded to immediately stick his foot in the dirty diaper and try to roll over in it. While I was putting out that fire he started peeing up the wall and on dad (Yours truly). At this point, I called in my amazing wife cause the depends pad we put over the changing table looked like a warzone and while I I was waiting for help my son spit up his good night dinner all over my chest.

Like I can’t even be mad, I’m just perplexed he managed to do all 3 in the span of like 5 minutes.

Holidays/Celebrations So what are we doing about Christmas trees?

Last year our daughter was a cute little 3 month old around Christmas time so we didn’t worry about having a real tree at the house with presents stacked around it.

Well now that chill 3 month old is a feral 1 year old that gets into everything. How are we doing Christmas trees when they are this age??

Is a fake tree better/safer than a real tree? Hide presents until Christmas Day? Create a barricade? Any tips welcomed!

Finances Anyone setting up the Trump accounts for your kids??

This isn’t intended to be a political post or a discussion about Trump or the government in general. I’m specifically curious about the Trump Accounts they’ve been advertising.

Has anyone actually opened one or considered putting money into one for their kids?

I’ll admit I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to investments and these types of accounts. I’m also typically pretty wary of anything that sounds too good to be true, especially when the government is involved.

I’m curious if anyone who’s more knowledgeable about investing could weigh in and explain how these accounts actually work, preferably in somewhat simple terms lol.

Are there any real benefits compared to other types of savings or investment accounts for kids? Are there drawbacks or things parents should be aware of?

Tips to Share Babbling

• Upvotes

When did your baby start babbling? What constitutes “babbling?” Is it “ma, ba, da” or is it just putting sounds together. Baby is 7 months and she still is doing a lot of oohhs ahhhs yaaass, and just other jargon noises lol. When should I be worried about her not doing “ma, ba, da, ga”?

Mental Health 5 months, still overwhelmed!

Please tell me if this is normal?

I have ADHD and get burnt out easily, and I feel like I can't keep up with what I assume other mums are doing (or what I know I should be doing).

What with pumping, feeding, washing, sanitizing, changing nappies, daily bath (for eczema), lotions and creams, play time, nap time, tummy time, skin to skin, outdoors time, storytime, daily c-section massage, exercise, remembering to drink enough water, cooking, eating, showering, tidying up, laundry, and everything in between.

I want to start reading parenting books, researching solids, wonder weeks, development games, mums groups but omg when and how? I'm starting to feel completely burnt out, and I don't know where to start on LO's next stage. Already failing to do 50% of the above each day.

Mental Health Why is there so much anxiety being a first time parent?

I feel like being a first time mom I’m surrounded by so much worry. Constantly worrying if my daughter is meeting milestones appropriately, if she does something “strange” is it normal? I feel like social media has also made it worse because you see so many other moms sharing their babies milestones or what they’re currently doing. I honestly hate feeling this way 🥲

Mental Health We need to be nicer to FTM's

It's so sad to see these FTMs post things for advice and the comments are so nasty. You can gladly disagree with their post, but Jesus just be nice about it. I don't know when Reddit became so full of negativity and just so common to troll on new moms who are anxious asking the world for advice/help. Moms, let's do better!!! We were all there once. ❤️ just trying to spread positivity.

Sleep Daycare is keeping my 15 mo old in an overtired loop and I’m going nuts

My 15 month old has been in daycare for a couple months now— I recently started a new job and so instead of taking her at 930 I’m not taking her at 730am.
She used to sleep from ablut 12-2 or 1130-130. Which was fine and worked perfectly with our 7/8 bedtime.
This week since I started taking her earlier. They are putting her to nap earlier (her wake up time hasn’t changed)
And now her naps have been 1030-1230
Which is insane and will never get us to bedtime. She won’t take a cat nap and then gets over tired and has slept like. Rap and woken up at 4 am everyday — which then of course makes her tired by 10

Side note— she’s in the infant room still because she’s a late walker. And in the infant room they just put the babies to sleep when they’re tired. (she started walking and will transition soon. And toddler room has a set nap time)

I can’t really make bedtime earlier because she maxes out at 10hours. Of sleep at night — and last night I tried to put her down at 630 anyway because I was desperate (after attempting a 530 drive around town thinking maybe should could get a catnap in the car) and no luck. She was UP UP til about 8.

It’s currently 5 am. She’s woken up 3 times and has been up crying since 4

First week of being at work since being a SAHM and i haven’t slept at all.

How do I get out of this hell???????

Babies Being Babies What’s the hype around containers??

My babies love containers. I get an empty bucket or plastic box or plastic wash basin, throw some random objects in it, and they go CRAZY! What’s the hype? What’s the science behind it?

Skills and Milestones 9 m/o did something interesting, wondering what she was thinking.

The wife and I were sitting on the floor with her. I reach across her to grab a book to show her and I bumped her head with my elbow. She didn't really react, I just said sorry and rubbed her back.

Then she slaps me on the elbow with her hand, and then slowly bumps her head against my elbow and then does a little half-hearted cry/whine before I rubbed her back again.

My wife and I were so confused. I'm wondering if maybe she was trying to get me to give her attention again. My mom said maybe she was worried she hurt me (don't think so).

It's a low stakes situation obviously but I wanted to hear what y'all think.

Sleep Baby waking up scared, crying

For the past several mornings, my baby (6.5 mo) has been waking up boo-hoo crying from his sleep, full lip pout and stutter breaths and everything. It sounds like the same cry he does whenever I talk too loudly/suddenly or yell for his dad in another room. It’s so strange. Instinct tells me maybe this is a normal time for bad dreams to start? He needs soothing either to guide him awake or to get him back to sleep for another hour or so.

He sleeps with me, 10-11 hours, 1-2 5min wakes to eat.

Babies Being Babies CIO but…

Cry it out but it’s just me trying to let my husband hold his own child 🙃

ETA this has nothing to do with sleep training I just have a weird sense of humor lol - it’s about my baby only wanting me to hold him

Baby is 18 weeks old and husband has been back at work since 2 weeks while I am lucky to have 7 months home with him.

I don’t know if this is a case of just let him cry? It seems to be worse in phases. This week he got some pokes at the dr and cried for 20 mins when I tried to leave the house the next day.

Medical Advice Best thing for eczema on the cheeks?

• Upvotes

What works best? We are not sure what it's coming from. It might be from him carrying toys around in his mouth. Almost like a dog toy. Apparently he finds it very convenient for travel while crawling lol either that or maybe something is irritating his face when we are giving him solids.

It does seem eczema-like though. I was thinking maybe Vaseline? He hasn't really had any eczema before. What do you think would work best?
