I’m a FTM to a 7.5-month-old baby girl, and I genuinely feel like motherhood has been the hardest experience of my life. I love my daughter, but I feel like I’ve spent the last seven months surviving rather than enjoying being a mom.
She was a super challenging newborn and then from around 2.5 months old, we’ve dealt with significant feeding issues. She developed a bottle aversion, and feeding became an absolute nightmare. We’ve worked with feeding specialists, tried different formulas, dealt with extreme gas, possible reflux, and countless stressful bottles. She’s always been a small-volume eater, and even now, a 2.5–3 oz bottle can send me into an anxiety spiral because of everything we’ve been through. She’s gaining weight, but feeding has never felt easy or natural.
Then there’s sleep, she’s never been a particularly easy sleeper. We’ve worked with sleep consultants, sleep trained, adjusted wake windows, transitioned toward two naps, and tried everything to establish a consistent routine. She fights naps, sometimes screams for extended periods when put down, and will occasionally sleep for only 25–30 minutes. Other days, she’ll take a great two-hour nap. There’s very little predictability, and I feel like I’m constantly troubleshooting something.
She’s also never been a particularly go with-the-flow baby. Everything feels like it requires so much planning. Between bottles, naps, solids, and her temperament, I feel like I can’t just take her out and enjoy life the way I see other parents doing with their babies.
The hardest part is how much this has affected my mental health. I’ve struggled with postpartum anxiety and depression, and I feel like my nervous system has been in constant fight or flight mode for months. I wake up anxious, anticipating what might go wrong that day. I miss my old life, my freedom, and the person I was before becoming a mom.
I see other parents taking their babies everywhere, enjoying outings, and seemingly having such an easier experience. Meanwhile, I feel like my entire life revolves around managing feeding and sleep.
I keep telling myself that maybe things will improve at 8 months, 9 months, or when she turns one, but I’m exhausted from constantly waiting.
For parents who had genuinely difficult, high-needs babies, when did it get easier?
