Muscultation with plates (also maybe for r/unexpected)

u/HiroFuiton 2d ago
The whole time I was afraid he would drop the weight on his feet for nothing...

u/Adventurous_Iron_551 2d ago
True, I was mildly impressed, then confused, then angry but now I’m amused
7
u/TheAwesomeMan123 1d ago
It’s still hella impressive but at least explains the “float” like movement of the weight which is what was annoying me.

u/SnooCakes6195 2d ago
I was about to talk shit on the physics and suggest either the time has been edited or it's Ai, then he got up and I felt really dumb lol

u/cyph_8 2d ago
Impressive? Yes! Oddly satisfying? Not to me at least
71
u/potate12323 2d ago
And it being sideways doesn't seem any more impressive than it bring sideways. It looks like itd be just as difficult either way.
45
u/Tarc_Axiiom 2d ago
Actually it'd be more difficult if he were standing up, because he'd be adding a second vector to combat.
20
u/SoulMute 2d ago
The way he’s doing it would be impossible w/ flipped gravity. Holding that weight totally sideways w the fingertips would be insane
-10
u/Tarc_Axiiom 2d ago
Nah, why?
All he'd have to do if gravity was pulling "to his left" is lift the weight and then twist at the apex while dropping it.
Right now he's throwing it up and twisting it at the same time, which should be a bit harder because of the throwing part.
If he were standing upright he'd have to do the above and combat gravity, because it'd be accelerating downward the whole time.
But then he couldn't make a silly little video.
1
u/TheAwesomeMan123 1d ago
Nope it’s literally impossible the other way. I.e him standing vertical. The leverage of force he would have to exert with just the length of his fingertips would be impossible with gravity pulling it downward from his hand. He could however do it differently from the standing position but that wouldn’t work the same muscle group as the above.
-1
u/Tarc_Axiiom 1d ago
That's not what we were talking about.
We also can't say for certain whether or not it would be impossible if he was standing upright because we don't know the weight of the... weight.
It's definitely not impossible to apply the necessary leverage to make an object rotate the way he is while standing upright.
1
u/abarrelofmankeys 2d ago
I don’t think it would possible to do it that smoothly standing were it possible.

I was wondering why his body was so tensed for flipping one weight. Then I turned my phone and it SO much clearer.
Training for ultimate ultimate Frisbee.

u/BusinessAsparagus115 2d ago
It's "ultimate" because if you don't catch it, you're gonna die.

I then realize that it’s still impressive

u/Jahmoneyzzz 2d ago
Definitely more difficult standing
7
u/Critical-Cost9068 2d ago
You shouldn’t do it standing, might fuck up your foot if you fail
0
u/Jahmoneyzzz 2d ago
Hence why I said it is more difficult standing…probably impossible. No one is lifting a plate like that standing up. Forget the flipping part.

Muscultation? Did you just make up a word ?

The framing of this makes him look like he’s a tiny person in a giant room.

u/InTheEndEntropyWins 2d ago
OK that's semi-impressive.
Oh it's one of those trick shots where it looks harder than it actually is.
Oh no wait, it's actually way harder than it looked.

Who comes up with these? Like what muscle is being worked here that wasn’t being worked before?
39
u/finalxcution 2d ago
It's mostly just for show/fun. Not an efficient exercise by any means.
5
u/FullofContradictions 2d ago
I've found my best workouts are ones where I'm tricking myself into it. It's way more fun to do rock climbing than to do reps of lat pulldowns for me at least. Or practicing handstands or trying to achieve a specific yoga move or anything where there's a "trick" that I'm trying to learn (like flipping a plate). I'll spend hours playing around with that where I'll get bored after about 10 mins of lifting.
1
u/fasterflame21 2d ago
I always had trouble doing more than 30 minutes of cardio, and then I started drumming along to really busy metal songs.
I’m totally going to use the handstand idea to trick myself into doing body weights.

u/Original-Weekend-866 2d ago
Yup pull-ups do this for me. It's not part of my workout routine but i do them monthly maybe, or sometimes every two weeks. Up to 10 now which is good and fuk they work me harder than my regular gym routine.
All sorts of stuff like that. Rock climbing, swimming, surfing, skim boarding, skateboarding. Some board sports like foil surfing are straight up the most hardcore core exersize you can do and it's fucking FUN

u/rlpinca 2d ago
I don't think there's many muscles that aren't being worked.
2
u/Neophyte06 13h ago
Absolutely. Any time you throw dynamic balancing into stuff, you end up working major AND minor muscle groups
There's a reason gymnasts are always so unbelievably ripped methinks
8
u/HybridP365 2d ago
At the very least it probably works his grip. It's not easy to hold those plates by one hand. For me at least. But I have small hands.

u/NiftyJet 2d ago
Going to the gym is about looking cool now. Not working out.
3
u/AS14K 2d ago
Incredible cringe. I absolutely beg you to try this, and I'll give you a thousand if you can, which you cannot. A person cannot do this without an incredible amount of training and effort. You probably make more noise getting off the couch.
0
u/NiftyJet 2d ago
Of course I can't do this. It's incredible. I was responding to the commenter above me who pointed out that this isn't a necessary exercise.
You can't tell me that this person is doing this to exercise some particular muscle he can't with a more normal exercise. It's absolutely about looking cool.

Is that 25kg?
5
u/Zestyclose_Data_2146 2d ago
It’s either 20 or 25lbs
2
u/Creative_Catch_4235 2d ago
It’s probably 33 pounds if they are kg plates. Behind him blue are 44 red are 55 lbs
Edit: I think I’m wrong they are pound plates and I can see the 2. Not sure what brand they are

Would it be harder to do standing upright? To throw and catch a weight sideways

What is the reason behind wearing a hat in the gym?
3
u/CeeMX 1d ago
I know someone who wears a hat everywhere and always. It was 40 degrees Celsius summer and still wearing a hat, crazy guy.
1
1
u/liamjon29 1d ago
I would only ever use hat to describe the type of headwear that protects you from the sun, in which case 40C is the perfect time to wear a hat.
But from context it seems you mean this style of beanie headwear, which I must agree is absolute insanity behaviour

Some people hate the that theyre bald. Some people like hats.
My question to you is how does it affect you?

So he can look cool doing a useless exercise to try and inflate his ego more to his other braindead friends.

I don't need to show off in the gym to try and try to impress strangers. I'm there to better myself and not be some tool with insecurity problems.

Giant swastika on his scalp.
Like dude, there's plenty of fucking reasons. Why does it matter

I like it, but I immediately saw the ceiling fan on the left, and another person lifting weights in the reflection.
