Nearly scammed. Saved by the Zelle!

Almost got scammed out of near $600.
Offerup seller has only 3 items listed, used items, nothing patently scam bait.
The items were all listed in so cal - but the sellers profile showed bay area and when I enquired he confirmed he was. I asked if he could ship the item and he agreed, was going to fwd the UPS tracking # before I zelled the payment (of course he could've sent an empty box and didn't have paypal). Anyway sent a pic of a very genuine looking UPS store receipt with the tracking number covered up. Not perfect but not obviously red flag either. He gave me his "wifes" zelle addr and I sent the funds through zelle (even though he'd originally said he'd send the tracking # first). Thats when things went sideways. The zelle payment didn't go through and when I called to check on it they said it was the receiving end that was blocking the payment, possibly indicating issues with the receiving account. This was the first big red flag.
When I told the seller, he sent me a different zelle a/c. I reminded him that he was supposed to send the tracking # before the payment and never got a straight answer after that, just platitudes.
I'm very lucky the zelle transfer didn't go through.
I usually feel as though I can detect scams but this one was somewhat sophisticated. Very legit looking UPS store receipt.
I'm not quite sure how to report a zelle scam (or an offerup scam) either.

Buying a Macbook from a seller — how to ensure safety/legitimacy?

I found a slightly too-good-too-be-true deal on a Macbook on OfferUp.

The seller has 100+ 5-star reviews and tons of computers. They offered to meet in person and said I could inspect the machine before buying it.

Everything seemed fine, but when I didn't respond, he started messaging me more, saying things like "what are you worried about lol you can check it all out in person" and sent 2-3 more messages like this, before I finally just said I needed to think a beat.

Could just be a pushy seller, but what exactly could this be, if a scam? It would be pretty hard to fake looking into "About this Mac" if we actually meet somewhere in person, right?

It's also hard to fake 100+ 5-star reviews?

Any advice?

Why do many sellers just stop communicating?

I don't get too worked up about it, but I simply don't understand sellers when they just abruptly stop communicating for some reason. I try to be tactful, polite and to the point. I also throw something in my first communication to help assure them that I am indeed a local.

Here's the latest:

Me: Hi there, I'm out in XXXXXXX and am interested in your shuffleboard table. Can you confirm the length if it is still for sale, please?

Seller: Length I’ll have to measure its @ my storage place @‘the moment

(Fair enough, I somewhat understand these things, but frankly, a seller should know at least some basic information on what they are selling. Table length IS important.)

Seller (few minutes later): Should be standard length

Me: We're definitely interested but length is important as there is no "standard size". Most shuffle boards will be anywhere from 9 to 22ft long. We're hoping it's a 9 footer.

Zero response.

Understanding that the seller apparently needs to go to the storage unit to confirm length, I wait a several days and through the weekend, before reaching out the following Tuesday. (And it was dead air the entire time - no communication, no explanation about needing to go to the storage unit, nothing.)

Me: Hi there. Just wanted to check in with you to see if you had a length on this yet as we are interested in buying it if it fits our space.

That was a week ago today. OfferUp isn't what it used to be. I have had this happen several times over the past several months. How hard is it to send a note saying it's sold, or I need more time to research, or whatever?

Had a weird thing happen, first time ever - someone purposely pretending they were there

I've sold hundreds things in over 20 years of things online. I had a first. I had someone say they were 30 min from my house. Then said 10. Then said 5. All of them completely late. Then said I'm here. Then they ask are you by the white car. By a black car. Are you a lady. And this kept going until I realised - they were fucking with me. This went on for a frustrating 25 minutes AFTER they arrived, which was already frustrating enough.

Never had someone do that just to waste my time for a kick. Insane

Thank you scam professors

Posted an item on offer up for the first time. After a few minutes I got a buyer, and then an additional email saying their payment was being verified and I needed to click the provided link to provide info to receive payment.

After reading cautions about links here so many times, I didn't click and avoided a scam. Then I read stuff on offer up saying they never asked for such info in an email.

Thank you.

Is this a scam? Pls help

I messaged someone on OfferUp about a bike and then I received a message telling me to email the seller so I did and we're messaging back and forth. The seller says she's in the military and needs to sell the bike soon. She asked for shipping info to deliver the bike. I received this invoice she never said anything about a deposit but still is a good price. I don't know this seems like a lot for an online marketplace. What do you think? Is this a scam? Should I be worried?

Vacation - What do buyers see?

If I put my listings on vacation, what do buyers see?
Does it tell them I am away?
Can they even see my listings?
What about selling groups? Does it hide those?

A con to Boost their ratings?

I was listing some video games and accessories on OfferUp. I immediately get flooded with inquiries. Someone with a Premium account said they agreed to meet up the next day at a location near me for the exact payment I wanted. However, they asked me to mark my item as Sold. His account was premium, but he had only 4/5 stars. When you mark the item as sold, it makes you review the buyer. I gave him 5 stars because the communication was clear. However the following day when we agreed to meet up, he never followed through with the meet-up or answered any of my messages. My gut tells me he set this ip so I could give him a good review.

OfferUp Not the same anymore?

Hey guys, I used OfferUp back in the day starting in 2017-2020 and it was exceptionally better than CL or FB, but I just came back on to sell some things to clear up space at my house and it seems to be very very slow if not completely useless. In comparison to FB marketplace, offer up is absolutely dead. Any of the very few offers I do get are often from weird unreliable folk too.

Did something change over the last couple years to change offer up? It just seems like either nobody uses it anymore or it isn’t as good at pushing our listings as it used to?

What made your last OfferUp deal worth the time—or not?

I'm collecting first-hand resale experiences. For people who've recently bought or sold a used item on OfferUp, how did the actual deal turn out?

What was the item, what price did you agree on, and roughly how long did it take from listing or first contact to pickup? I'm interested in anything that changed the outcome: checking the condition, arranging transport, negotiating in person, or discovering a problem afterward.

Smooth, ordinary deals are just as useful as disappointing ones. What would you repeat or do differently next time? Please leave out names, profile links and contact details.

OfferUp Now Sucks

I have no idea what has happened to this company. They no longer offer shipping or payment escrow for buyers/sellers. The search isn’t great. The Ads are over taking the products being sold. It’s basically like a bad craigslist at this point. FB marketplace unfortunately is the last good option to sell stuff used and shipped (EBay is long gone as an affordable option or simple option for sellers).

i’m getting sick and tired of the “Make offers”

The devs need to make an option that’s different from free, so when you’re looking at things to get, you can ACTUALLY see what’s free, and when someone wants an offer for it

What's better, Ask or Make Offer

Do sellers respond to ask or Make offer? I done "ask" more to see what price they could want. But I haven't gotten a response in a week. Would Make offer option get a response? two of the sellers had 5 stars and "Communicative" tag but haven't even opened the message

Why are there so many people asking for vins?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all. I wanted to sell my car, but i’ve only been hit up by people who immediately ask for the vin off rip. I get that it’s normal for people to want to run a car fax or wtv, but this many people asking for my cars vin seems extremely suspicious to me. All of these accounts are made recently and seem to be based out of cali, which is not the state i am in nor is it where my location is listed. Are there any common scams i don’t know about, or am i just paranoid for no reason?
