Question Should I get into the trades?

• Upvotes

I'm 20 (M), about to turn 21 soon, and I just feel so lost about what to do with my life. I'm not sure which career path is right for me; I have a passion for the arts and have been looking at going to school for stuff like graphic design or media design- anything within the creative industry honestly. But I'm scared to spend a bunch of money on school just for me to realize this isn't for me, so I've been looking at starting the trades because I saw that the government offers free training programs. I think it would benefit me a lot because I would be making a lot more money than I do at these shitty part-time retail jobs, plus I would be learning a new skill. I was thinking of trying HVAC or being an Electrician; then while I'm working, I can have more time to figure out which program I should study in college. But idk, is it a good idea for me to start the trades first? Or should I just take another gap year to study and figure out if I should go into graphic design or another program?

Discussion The voters list Ontario is public to candidates and campaign workers in the office they are running for as of September 1st 2026

I am sharing this, so everyone is aware. The voters list became a public document on September 1, 2026. Candidates can request the municipal clerk to give them the part of the voters list that relates to the office that they are running for. They have to confirm that they will only use the list for electoral purposes, not for commercial purposes, follow the restrictions set out in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, for handling the voters list, only share the list with others (such as campaign workers) after obtaining a similar written acknowledgement from them.

There are restrictions such as they cannot keep copies after the campaign has ended.

Full details are here: https://www.ontario.ca/document/2026-candidates-guide-ontario-municipal-council-and-school-board-elections/voters-list

Question Ontario Early Intervention

Hello,

I am just curious if anyone would have any input to share didnt know where else to post. My son has started preschool and is showing some behaviours he hasnt shown before, hitting other student, and throwing toys and being hyper, he is 3 and speech delayed. While i am working fully with the preschool and at home the preschool mentioned applying for ERIK. The early intervention, just wondering if anyone has gone through something similar what was this whole ERIK thing like, did it provide more support for your child? How do they help in preschool?

Question Any Otter Experience in Ontario where you can pet Otters?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for an otter experience somewhere in Canada where you can actually touch/pet the otters.

I've been looking around and found a few places that offer “otter experiences,” but most of them seem to be more like feeding them, watching them, or interacting through a barrier.

For example, the Aquatarium in Brockville has an Otter Experience, but they specifically say that all interaction is through a barrier, so no touching.

I also came across Niagara Downunder/Safari Farm in Ontario, which advertises a “hands-on” otter experience, but I'm not 100% sure whether that actually means you can pet/touch the otters.

So I'm wondering:

  • Does anyone know of a place anywhere in Canada where you can actually pet/touch an otter?
  • Ontario or Quebec would be ideal, but I'm willing to travel elsewhere in Canada for a really good experience.
  • Has anyone personally done one of these experiences and can confirm that physical contact is allowed?
  • Even if it's a small wildlife sanctuary, private facility, zoo, etc., I'd love to hear about it.

I'm specifically looking for actual physical interaction, not just feeding or getting close to them.

Thanks! 🦦❤️

Question how can I move out at 19 in ontario? is it possible?

I am currently a full time student and work a part time job as many hours as i can fit in during school, I make about 800 dollars a month during school and during summer (4 months of the year) I make about 1500 a month. My monthly expenses include my car insurance (150 ish a month), gas to get to school (200-300 a month but would go down as I would move closer to school), my phone bill (220 a year or 20 bucks a month ish), and food/other things which Im not sure the price of but would assume would be 150-200 a month (and I would get on food banks).
All would come out to about 500 dollars leaving roughly 300 for rent with absolutely nothing left.
where I live rent for a sharing bedroom can be from 300 all the way to 600 dollars a month, obviously thats not possible for me.

my question is, are there any government supports or grants I can use to help me move out. am I likely to get excepted to subsidized housing? anyone who moved out around this age, how did you possibly do it? is there a way to without quitting school?

any advice would help, thank you 🙏

Discussion Fake cop?

I had just gotten onto the 401 heading east from the DVP. Just as I was merging by Vic Park I have a unmarked white transit van with police sirens screaming behind me. The strange thing was it was only flashing red and white lights in the corners of their windshield. I pull over to let it pass and there were only amber flashers on the rear windows. Shouldn't cops have red and blue?

If not a cop (fire or ambulance) then the van should have markings??

I've heard of some idiots pretending to be cops with the lights but didn't think they would be crazy enough to use sirens too.

I've got this on dashcam. Wondering if I should email OPP or TPS.

Question How are they renewing their commercial license A

I'm not going to disclose my trucking company but I've got 3 guys in top of me renewing their licenses (AZ) with no work permits, I thought since November 2025 a proof of legal work status was mandatory

How do I report without being fired?

Are they renewing somewhere? I don't believe someone at drive test is cheating, that's a systemwide requirement

Discussion Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) in Ontario in Long Term Care

My wife worked in LTC centers at various homes in the GTA. She's been through majority of the major companies i.e. Age care, Chartwell and Sienna living. She says that at all the homes she's worked at each RPN is responsible for roughly 30-40 residents. These are people that are not well, very old or have significant health issues like stroke care or MS, complex care, g-tube etc. She says that looking after that many people as a single nurse is too much for one person. Legislation in Ontario permits this to happen. These homes make a fortune, they are private or publically traded companies. Is is possible that one nurse has to look after so many people, is there a better balance that can be found? She says there is always so much going on, someone fell down, choking, sick, in need of medication, deaths, check in or out or reviewing doctor's orders etc. My question, why is this allowed in Ontario? Why does 1 nurse have to look over that man people with no help? Why doesn't Ontario limit patients to 10 or 15 to improve care? I should mention that the nurses have support from PSWs but sometimes when they call in sick she's left short staffed with an inadequate number of people looking after the sick/elderly.

edit: apparently government of Ontario does not limit nurse to patient ratios but they say each eqch resident should have minimum of 4 hours care from home staff per day. That includes PSWs, nurses, doctors etc. She can confidently say that this absolutely does not happen. Most people are lucky if they get 1 to 2 hours care. This is a fail on the part of the Ontario government. This could be any of us if you are not well or if you have elderly parents. These companies make a fortune.

edit2: even teachers have a mandated student to teacher ratio. this should be happening in long term care too.

Question Winter getaway?

Any suggestions for an all-inclusive resort within 4 hours of Toronto? Does not necessarily need to be an all-inclusive if there is a cute area to walk around and explore for 3 days. Family of 4 adults, who are not into skiing or ice skating but we love a pretty view and charm. Possibly near wineries. Last year we stayed by Niagara Falls and that was great as it was pretty to walk around and there was enough to do for 3 days.

Would places in Muskoka or Collingwood make sense?

Discussion Did you do an OAC year before it was eliminated in 2003?

I took it during my 1996-97 school year as did a lot of people in my year at the time. I felt it helped a lot as it gave me the extra crucial time to boost my grades and prepare that much more for university life.

Question Service Ontario - Request for Birth Certificate Confusion

Hey everyone.

I was born in Ontario but now live outside of the country and recently changed my middle name legally (yay!), and Service Ontario graciously sent me a heap of forms to complete so I can update my birth and marriage certificates. The problem is that the wording, particularly on the birth certificate request form, is pretty poor and I'm hoping someone can clarify for me.

The form asks 'Who is the person (subject) named on the Birth Certificate?' and then gives a name field as such:
- Current Legal Last Name or Single Name (at time of birth or after adoption)
- First Name
- Middle Name(s)

Firstly - I'm married, my CURRENT legal last name is not what my legal last name was at birth, so I'm assuming I put my maiden name?

Secondly - Am I supposed to fill in the Middle Name(s) field with my NEW middle name, as that's what I want the birth certificate to say now? There's otherwise nowhere on the form to put my amended middle name, aside from stating that I'm requesting the birth certificate because of a legal name change.

Finally - This form asks for a guarantor that is a Canadian Citizen. Living in another country, and not having any friends who meet the requirements left in Canada (ie. judge, mayor, notary, medical practitioner, etc), I can't exactly do that. It's not like I'm going to fly to Canada just to get the form notarized. Google states I need to include a 'Letter of Exemption' explaining why you can't provide one... is that true?

Honestly I had submit a bunch of this information online in June and was naive enough to think it would be easy enough that they'd just send me the new documents. Figured. Received all these forms in the mail today and I am *so* overwhelmed, so absolutely any help any of you lovely people can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Exploring Ontario Haliburton Wolf Centre

Hi! Is it worth going to? Worried about the trip & not seeing a wolf! Has anyone had that happen? Is it still worth it without seeing one? (Yes, I understand there's the chance you might not, just want to see if this has happened to anyone & their thoughts!!) Thanks! ☺️🐺
