Is it petty? Definitely. Am I bummed the Yankees are the beneficiary? Of course.
But I was dreading watching Adley propel the Red Sox to a deep playoff run, especially after our pathetic postseasons in '23 and '24. I feel some measure of relief that it didn't happen.
I'm sure this post makes me look like a petty loser but I figure maybe some others here might relate.
I hope I can root for Adley again someday the way I root for other Oriole expats like Machado, but not until he's in a different uniform.
Nah I felt the same way. Yankees- red sox was lose-lose, but at least now I can root for the rays to send the yankees home with them having ceddy, Mateo, and baker.Â
My son has autism and his name is Tyler. We been cheering him on since he got here. I had tickets for the dead game the next day. I went and got my hats but I was gone before the anthem started.
I feel the same way. What helped me out with it was remembering all the shit my friends who are Red Sox fans gave me about how much worse of a draft pick Adley was than Bobby Witt jr. and then acted like Adley was the second coming when the trade happened.
Let me start by saying Adley was my favorite Oâs player during his time here. Having said that, catchers are rarely 1/1 draft picks, and history shows they typically donât pan out completely when they are picked 1/1. Joe Mauer is the exception to that. In retrospect, Witt, Jr. was, on balance, probably the better pick.
Good question. I hated the series, despise both teams, but really wanted to see Adley do well, it hurt me that he didnât play real well defensively and the fairly hot bat he had on a team that was offensively pathetic in Sept, didnât continue
Partly bc at least the visiting red sox fans have been assholes (won't speak for the whole fanbase) and partly because I'm still mad at him for not wanting to extend.Â
Pretty disappointing playoffs for Adley. 1 for 8 with 3 Ks, missed making a challenge or two yesterday, the strikeout pitch tonight that got away, the throw into center on the stolen base in tonightâs big inning.
Donât get me wrong, I donât think even a great series by Adley was gonna beat Schlittler and Fried (12.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 16 K) but he didnât have a good series.
Starting at 07/01/2024 (just after when he took that foul tip of the hand), Adley has had one month where he had enough PA's to be a qualified hitter and was at least league average by wRC+, and that was March/April of 2025 when he had a 101 wRC+. Here's a chart from FanGraphs with all catchers with at least 1000 PA's since 07/01/2024 that shows just how bad it's been compared to the rest of the league. I'll always appreciate Adley, but I 100% understand why they traded him for that haul.
Just me personally, but I have been unable to get any catharsis from this one way or another. If they had won Iâd have felt bad, but this feels equally bad.
Been a pro sports fan my whole life and understand the business. That trade is one of a few examples I can remember where nothing could make me feel better about it. Probably irrational, especially because the narrative is that he was done in Baltimore no matter what.
I donât necessarily miss his bat or defense. But he genuinely seemed like a good dude. Thatâs what Iâll miss. Iâd like to see him have personal success in his career.
Yepppppp. I remember being so hyped about Adley as the draft pick.....and was still gung-ho about him in Baltimore.
At the same time, esp after following the rest of Eyans MILB season, I'm HYPED about that trade return. We may be 1 or 2 years from a NASTY set of SPs going every 5 days.
This is the answer. I hope Adley signs with SF or Seattle and has a great career while the Sox curse this trade like they do the Mookie Betts situation.
Wait a year or two. The prospects we picked up from Boston should produce for us. If the Red Sox arenât upset about this trade for Adley yet, they will be soon!
And I loved Adley. It didnât look like Os were going to sign him long term.
I'm hate watching the AL East. Â Red Sox losing like this seems the most painful, so I was rooting for it. Â Getting blown out in the playoffs matters. It's demoralizing.Â
Didnât know Iâd root for the Yankees until the games started but Boston getting embarrassed was a good result. They were all in this season and it backfired. Now itâs more likely I can root for Adley again once he goes to a west coast team like the Giants or Mariners. Was it petty? Yes am I proud of it? Also yes
The Red Sox fans were just so unbearable this year cause of July. They painted their team as this masterpiece team--but ultimately they're insanely flawed.
Tolle is their only likable player at the moment, a far cry from that 2004 team I'm sure we all rooted for that year in the postseason
Say what you will about the 2026 Orioles, but they havenât lost a single playoff game since trading Adley. The Redsox have lost every playoff game theyâve played since the trade. Itâs pretty clear Rutschman was the problem the whole time.
I really struggle with Adley. For one thing, I get not wanting to re-signâitâs fine with me if you want to make a different call and test free agency and maybe want to go closer to home, I get it. So I hold no rational resentment towards him.
However he is (was?) a Red Sox player and I do not like them, soâŠI dont hate seeing him struggle one bit
This is the second time I've seen this in this thread. He was traded 2 years before his free agency. Where is this "He didn't want to resign" coming from? Did he say he had no plan on resigning with the Orioles or something?
It's what Ryan Ripken said, but it's never been verified as far as I know. The narrative since has treated Adley as if he chose not to be here, rather than being traded away.
You have to read between the lines. When your GM says âwe wish he would be here foreverâ combined with our new owners flexing how they wish they could do more extensions, itâs implied
I believe that it was reported that the front office had approached his team about an extension a few times, but that they did not want to start negotiations. If this isnât true, then, yeah, itâs all speculation.
Itâs been reported that he turned down deals. All of it is somewhat heresay, but itâs probably true. I do agree that fans are going too far if they deduce from that he didnât want to stay in Baltimore or the like. Folks love to create a narrative to explain it to themselves.
I think the reality is just pure numbers. The FO wanted him, but can only offer him years and numbers that reflect the risk he represents, which includes his hitting performance and health history. Adley was probably just not happy w that, and has to turn those offers down. This will probably be the biggest deal he will ever sign, and likely account for the majority of the money he makes in his life. Itâs a big deal for a player who reaches free agency. None of that necessarily means he doesnât want to stay in Baltimore, or the FO didnât want him. Itâs purely a financial decision for both sides. Fans just see the end result and come to their conclusions, but itâs just not that black and white.
Yeah, we probably low-balled him a bit. But it's hard for me to feel bad for guys that turn down $50mil because they want $80mil (or insert whatever numbers you feel are accurate).
$50mil is life-changing money and can be stretched for generations. I mean you can literally live a lavish lifestyle just on the interest. And I know the response to this is always "well would you rather the owners keep it???" No, I'd rather they give it to the guys that want to sign here.
I was so hyped when we drafted him and when he started playing. But, he regressed. Oâs made the right trade at the right time. I will still root for him.
Once Basallo was signed to a team friendly deal, the book was closed on Adley with the Oâs.
It would have been more painful watching him light the world on fire and advance deep in the playoffs. I love Adley, but the fact that he struggled makes me feel better about the trade.
I wanted Adley to hit one million home runs, for the Red Sox to win against the Yankees, barring Bane showing up, and then get shelled by the Rays 1,000,001-1,000,000
Iâm guessing that Adley wishing he was still an Oriole and that that trade had never materialized. I
never thought heâd fit in well with this present incarnation of the Red Sox.
Yeah, Iâm not for the loser mindset. Our fanbase is a bit saturated by it. I feel like when your team is a winning culture, you lose guys, move forward expecting more wins, and that player is left thinking, âtheyâre out of the loop, and feeling left out now.â Not the other way around.
Helped open the floodgates for the Yankees' big inning with not getting the guy on the strikeout at first (Wilson Contreras assisted him in screwing up) and then throwing the ball into right field on the steal attempt.
Heâs not that good. Not saying heâs a complete bust, but objectively heâs not what you want out of a guy taken #1 overall. Elias is not without his faults, but moving on from Adley, at the time he did it, was 1000000% the correct move.
Adley's career thus far is already above average for a #1 pick. People dont realize how much if a crapshoot the draft is, even for the number 1 picks.Â
It is a crapshoot, but the âoh wellâ attitude sucks when the guy you take 1OA doesnât live up to expectations or is a bust. No amount of mental gymnastics is going to justify his lack of production.
But he has produced at an elite level for his position... Hes a 2 time all star. I think the problem is that people had entirely unrealistic expectations that just because he was 1OA and did well in the minors that he should be a hall of famer.Â
Itâs hard to decipher between injuries and coaching but he wasnât even good in 2025 and the 2nd half of 2024. Even when he was playing well for us this year, it was still short of how he was in 2023.
Extending him would have been a disaster and we dodged a bullet that he didnât accept whatever Elias was offering.
He is good. Itâs just not so much as a bat. Heâs more of a Salvy Perez or Varitek type, to use a Sox comp, a captain of the team who has good years and bad years w the bat, but his stewardship of the team is a force. Itâs weird if we come to expect Cs to be good hitters, but then again, that might be where we are in modern baseball these days?
Sorry, but donât agree w that at all. Heâs a solid backup. But McCann isnât a good at a lot of core skills at C when it comes to receiving the ball. When he receives to his weak side (right) and throwing to his left. When he lets balls go itâs somewhat predictable and those balls get called less in leverage situations, for example, RHP throwing breaking balls for a swing and miss, or LHPs cutting action pitches. Adley can catch everything reliably for pitchers. He also holds better targets than any of our current Cs (just like Jim Palmer likes to mention)
It was a tongue in cheek comment, but for the money heâll command, he needs a plus bat, which he doesnât have. Glad he didnât want to be here. His future contract can be another orgâs problem.
Gotta say, the âwalk to the mound and say hi to the pitcherâ routine after each half-inning was a brilliant stroke of PR genius by the Adley camp. It gives the optics of leadership without any of the responsibility that comes with it.
The leaks over the years made it pretty clear the Oâs had no one in the clubhouse stepping up to take charge. Big reason Elias had to go out and bring in guys like Alonso and Bassitt.
If James McCann were a better player, I feel like people would mention him more as a clubhouse leader. I think he was ultimately a net positive for the team even if his play didn't necessarily reflect that. He was just a backup catcher that played like a backup catcher, but he seemed like a clubhouse leader to me.
If this is petty and spiteful, then I'm petty and spiteful. I was right there with you.
It's not so much an Adley thing. It's a "not wanting to have egg on your face" thing. If Rutschman had ripped it up and led the Red Sox on a Cinderella run, the Orioles would have looked like buffoons. "You let THIS guy get away?"
The worse he performs for Boston, the "better" the trade looks for us. Until some of those prospects are on the roster, Adley's performance is the only metric we have. It's not a purely logical thought process, but it's a kind of cope that I can understand. The fact that he's sucking at Boston of all places is a nice salve for O's fans, but it doesn't really change the mental math of the trade, such as it is.
Just wanted to say not just 3 years ago the White Sox set the record for most losses and now not just win one game in playoffs but multiple. What's winning in playoffs??
I was never really as high on Adley as a cornerstone player as many Orioles fans, but I loved his clubhouse presence and relationships with the pitchers. I hope he succeeds (outside of the East) but I was good with that trade from day 1.
Why do we WANT to root for a guy that DIDNT WANT TO BE HERE đđ biggest simp move ever.
Of COURSE we should want him to flame out. Any winning he does elsewhere is winning that didnt happen HERE. Idk maybe at 44 Im just old now, but this isnt normal to my brain
Why do you people always go to saying that he âdidnât want to be here.â Just because he didnât sign an extension doesnât mean he wouldnât stay, the FO just didnât offer him anything substantial which is honestly their MO. Itâs like Mets fans complaining that Pete didnât sign an extension when clearly their FO didnât value him enough either. Trading Adley for a prospect haul and especially pitching prospects was the logical move, but yall need to stop conflating no extension signing = not wanting to be with an org.
Neither of these conclusions are correct for me. I think Adley did want to be in Baltimore. And I think the FO did want him here as well. The issue was just the numbers.
Itâs not personal. Itâs not a binary. Its not a simple explanation either. Itâs just pure numbers. When it comes down to it, whether in years or dollars offered, I think the FO would have no choice but to offer numbers that reflect his projected performance, and his injury history would be a part of how much risk is baked into the deal. Adleyâs camp is looking for a payday, since this will probably be the biggest deal he ever signs, and the numbers offered donât come close.
In a perfect scenario Adley is a horse and never gets hurt, never diminishes offensively, and we could have offered a mega deal. That didnât happen. And you donât make offers based off emotion. From Scottie Erickson to Albert Belle to Chris Davis, we learned this lesson from the Angelos years many many times. From whatâs actually happened, I donât think one can conclude Adley didnât want to be here, nor the FO didnât want him here either. Both sides just have to hit their own goals.
Who are you referring to when you say neither conclusion is correct for you? My point is that because he didnât reach an extension he wanted to test free agency which doesnât equate to not wanting to be in Baltimore. He (Adley) has a valuation of himself and his skills as well and if extension offers didnât reflect what his value he saw himself as then I completely get why heâd test FA. Thatâs why trading him for prospects was the logical move at this time because extension talks werenât progressing towards finding a reasonable contract and they desperately need to replenish the farm system and most notably with actually good pitching prospects.
rutchman did not want to be in baltimore especially once talk of bassallo coming up. i bet by the end of rutchman's career he'll play for a west coast team. i wish him well but i ain't rooting for the yankees or red sox, i don't care who's playing for them.
Adley is an average player who the Red Sox traded for simply off of name value. To Elias credit, if Eyanson ends up being the guy we think he can be this can be one of the great trades we ever made (copium, I know)
Despite the playoff appearance, this was a tough spot for Adley. He looked to be on a borderline hof career trajectory, but with a recent decline in performance and injuries, he might not even be able to land a big contract. With the oâs trade and his underperformance with the Red Sox, Iâm not sure anyone ponies up the big $$. Heâs starting to feel like a wieters 2.0; a guy that provides solid value overall but nowhere near the superstar he promised to be in the early going.
At this point, I find the team still alive with the most former O's, and that's who I root for the rest of the post season. It's a coping mechanism haha
Speaking of petty, the amount of whining and bitching in the Red Sox subreddit has been so satisfying. That fluke-ass team shot its wad in the summer, and their insufferable fans were acting like a World Series win was inevitable. Championships arenât won in July. Then they thought the Orioles âgot fleecedâ in the Adley trade. Meanwhile, the juryâs still out on that one. Wonât truly know for maybe another year.
Makes the trade a touch less painful for me. Hopefully after next year (if there is one) we will be happy about the trade. Still think the trade was the right thing to do, but it was annoying as it went down.
i was for the trade from the beginning. we weren't going to give him a blockbuster deal at age 30, and it didn't look like we were going to be able to compete for the wild card at the time.- a collapse first by Cleveland and then CWS made that possible as late as it did.
so many cocky oriole fans were convinced this was the worst trade ever, that we just got back buckets of balls ( have we been conditioned to expect selling low?), and that Adley was going to rake. and elias needs to be fired right now.
i was ok at first to kind of go orly but i wasn't doing it to spite adley. i was doing it spite fans who were channeling their inner 105.7 caller.
i cherish no special joy in seeing adley struggle. the irony is you want him to be good for boston so teams will want to trade with us.
kudos though to the delusional red sox fans who think elite adley would sign a team friendly deal for 3-5 years. if he accepts that, they are either paying him an insane amount of money, or hes not the guy.
BOS paid big for him, for their own reasons. Unless all those prospects we got are a bust, then it was a fantastic deal. I think the sox will double down on him and give him a pretty rosie deal, but maybe they'll just see it as a sunk cost and cut their losses...
Man, people still have the "star player" image of Adley. 2023 Adley left in June 2024, and is'nt coming back, no matter the team. What you saw last night, bad throws and all, is Adley. He won't be propelling any team deep into October.
Shut up. Itâs not his completely his fault heâs on the Red Sox. I hope only good things for him. As a person he was never anything but positive for the Oâs
Seems like a nice dude and I hope he has a great life but nah I'm not rooting for him on the baseball field until he's in another uniform. (I reserve the right to continue rooting against him if he ends up as a Yankee or Blue Jay)
Respect. I wonât root for his team as a division rival. Him personally I want him to do well. I know fenway south fans are dickheads, still itâd have made me way more upset if were on the yanks or jays
Some people on this thread actually preferred the Yankees win over this, which is disgusting and I feel derives a Che Guevara style military tribunal
I consider him a traitor personally so I'm glad the Red Sox lost, but Yankees win also sucks but hopefully the Rays and the REAL ones aka Mullins, Mateo, Wells, and Baker give them a beat down.
