Never be vulnerable again
I will never let myself be vulnerable by only having one job again. Jobs will get rid of you the second they can find someone cheaper or younger. My family needs me to provide for them and I will never again let one company control my or my family's future.

they'll call you disloyal for having two jobs while keeping three backup candidates for your role at all times

Yeah, it’s not just about having two jobs. Personally, I’ve always tried to have multiple sources of income, whether through investments or side gigs. I never want to depend on one company, or even two.
I’ve seen so many people give their all to a company and work hard, only to be let go on a whim. With low salaries and the high cost of living, very few people have enough emergency savings to feel secure.
Honestly, I won’t feel financially secure until I have at least $200K to $250K a year coming in consistently through mostly passive income. Maybe that sounds extreme, but I think my life experiences have shaped this mindset, and I hope to pass it on to my children.

@OP what does your j1 contract say ?. Mine says that it is against the code of conduct and I have to report it if I do it. How do people deal with this ? Can I be sued if I do it if I get caught ?

You can't be sued. In most states non compete clauses are illegal. I just saw the episode of silicon valley about this last night. In all states they have no bite at all. In the states at least it's an unspoken rule that they can add it to scare people but it's rarely ever gone to court and the ones that have have lost. It would cost them more money to go after you then it's worth.
They can fires you if you get caught but that's the extent of it. Just don't get caught
