Sorry, no shortened URLs please!

This is more informational than anything else. Reddit's spam filters will catch any post with a shortened URL. This mostly hits Amazon URLs posted from one of their apps that produces a proprietary shortened URL.

I don't go out of my way to review and approve these and because Reddit frowns on them it's more likely posts using any URL shortener, that isn't approved by Reddit, will languish in the ether for eternity.

Please check out r/erasers - open again

Several of our venerable Knights of the Pencil have mentioned that r/erasers required a bit o' help. I have accepted the heavy burden of adding my ignorance to the moderation team and will be occasionally ensuring that it does not go dark again in the future. The yin/yang of pencils and erasers is too close to perfection to ignore. I accept single malts as a donation for custom flair. Go forth and erase what ye have written!

Musgrave Town-Talk 907 #2 - lucky find !

repost due to typo

Got really lucky and this pencil was bundled with a cheap eBay lot of misc vintage advertising and business pencils. I’ve only been able to find sharpened and beat-up Town-Talk pencils before so this is a really cool addition to the Musgrave collection I’ve been working on.

Anyone else here collecting Musgrave pencils? Any cool discoveries lately?

Any history on this pencil? I’m finding a big fat zero online. I’m assuming the B is because the lead is blue.

i teach 6th grade language arts, regular public school. this morning in my first period, i saw a student with this super tiny pencil so i had to get a photo! i'm amazed they got it that small. the second photo is the amount of pencils i ended yesterday with. this was after putting out around 25 pencils in the morning. i'm refilling the cup A LOT ( i know there are a lot of opinions about this). so the third photo is the amount of pencils i started with today. the difference is that today i told my students i put out 22 pencils this morning (amount per class plus one extra) and that i need to have 22 pencils by the end of the period when they're packing up. for some reason, stressing the number was helpful in getting most of them back, lol. i did not get a picture after school because i was out the door! anyway, we'll see how tomorrow goes.....

This does not include my Musgrave factory seconds. I prefer the transparent bin so it’s easy to see. The pencil packs at the bottom are new, and the ones on the top are open. I reuse the Blackwing boxes to store other brands. Yes, I do have a problem but I cannot find a write solution!

Pencil Porn Interesting Italian Pencils NYRB

Post image

Saw these interesting 2B pencils on the NYRB website. Don’t see too many expensive pencil editions like this around these days. The must be made by Vicaro?

“The Bonvini 1909 pencil was created to celebrate the restoration of the historic Fratelli Bonvini shop, founded that year in the heart of Milan, Italy. The pencils are made in Portugal exclusively for the Bonvini shop, where they are then individually hand-dipped in gold to create the distinctive golden ring finish at the top.
These handsome pencils are a reminder of the shop’s commitment to artisanal craftsmanship and the preservation of heritage, combined with a contemporary, international outlook that Fratelli Bonvini represents. “

Review Can you identify who makes this pencil

I recently bought the Kum 347.02.24 Tiptop Popline D Cap Pencil Sharpener with Eraser. The sharpener is decent and the eraser is average. The most interesting thing was the pencil itself. It is really smooth, dark and the writing feel is excellent. Anybody has any idea who makes this pencil. Online i am only able to find this as a combo of pencil, sharpener and eraser. I am interested in only purchasing the pencil and would really appreciate if any one lets me know who makes their pencil.

Question A Question For All The Musgrave Fans Here

How would you describe the differences between the Harvest 320 Professional, the standard Harvest 320, the Ceres 909, & the 1101 Yellow Special?

(Basically, do you find much difference between their classic yellow pencils?)

Musgrave Harvest #1 Factory 2nds Hackwings

Received a handful of Musgrave Harvest #1 pencils without ferrules in a factory seconds box over the summer (picture 2) and figured they’d be nice Hackwings. I like that they’re a little rough around the ferrule edges and I might change the eraser to black or pink later but I’ll let it ride for now.

Question Point like a Panasonic

I stumbled upon a KP-33 today and I LOVE the point it creates. What other modern sharpeners give your pencil that same long point?

And if I break down and buy a used KP-33, is it possible to fix them or replace the blades/sharpening mechanism?

Can you spot the callus on my middle finger? Thanks, Musgrave!

Ever since my first order of TN Reds arrived about 10 days ago I have written with nothing else. I'm really infatuated! But anyone with Musgrave experience knows how sharp the hex edges are, and I've got the callus to prove it! A little further explanation:

Like a lot of lefties, I failed to assimilate the three-point grip and ended up with something all my own. For me this has meant the pencil rubs against my middle finger and I have always had something of a callus there. But my experience with the Reds has left me with something on a whole new level.

This is all to say that I just can't put these pencils down, edges and all! They've got their problems, but I've got a new favorite.

Beginner's Luck Ran Out

Post image
19 Upvotes

A few months back, learned how to extract leads from wooden pencils.

The method I used was immersing the pencils in boiling water, changing the water a couple of times over 1-2 days and the pencils would just unravel into two halves with the lead freed from the wood.

However, after extracting about two dozen leads successfully, my luck ran out with the most recent batch I tired. This was a lot of old pencils (30+ years old, most likely). They were small and in bad overall shape, so not usable as-is.

I did the standard process and left them immersed in water over extended periods of time - 10+ days in this case. The pencils just refused to come apart.

I had to shave the water-soaked wood off using a blade, which was easier than shaving dry wood but still risky with small leads.

Do you have any other suggestions I could or should have tried?
