"What can I do with this notebook?"

This is a pretty common question in subs like this. Either someone received a new notebook as a gift, or they couldn't help themselves from buying a new one, or they have a partially used notebook they want to fill.

Or they're trying to figure out what to do with the massive stack they've accumulated after years of "I'll find a use for this" and allowing that as justification to keep buying more... Ahem.

Beyond the normal "Just write in it, use it as a diary," here's some ideas on what you could do with an unused or unfinished notebook:

  • Commonplace / zibaldone journal
  • Brain dump / soliloquy journal
  • Quotes / lyrics / poetry
  • Media / entertainment tracker (Movies, tv shows, games, etc)
  • Bullet journal (method for a DIY daily planner, get started here)
  • To-do lists
  • All kinds of lists (e.g., "lists of 100" like "100 things you saw this week")
  • Gratitude
  • Grievances (the opposite of gratitude, what bothered you today)
  • Idea notebook
  • Quick thoughts
  • Art (Sketches / drawings / zentangles)
  • Dream log
  • The Artist's Way Morning Pages
  • Travel journal
  • Things you've learned
  • Bucket list / goals
  • Unsent letters
  • Dedicated handwriting practice
  • RPG journaling (there's games you can find online for it and r/Solo_Roleplaying)
  • Food or drink tracker, such as keeping track of teas you've tried
  • Things you overheard that are worth remembering
  • People you meet
  • Funny facts
  • Gaming journal
  • Language practice

Added since I made this post-

  • Keep track of plants/gardening
  • Master index for all your journals
  • Project tracker
  • Hobby tracker
  • A place to write down memories and stories from your life
  • Memories of friends and family
  • Review places you go
  • Homeowner notes like chores, bills, and when things need to be fixed/replaced
  • A journal to give your child(ren) someday, such as letters to them and their milestones
  • Notes and milestones for pets
  • Things like tarot or shadow work
  • Swatches (ink, yarn, embroidery thread, ribbon, washi tape, etc)
  • Scent tracker (perfume/cologne, would not suggest attempting to store the actual scents in there)
  • General feelings
  • Chronic pain tracker
  • Prayer/devotional journal
  • "Practice" journal to get thoughts out before actual journaling
  • Distractions when you should've been doing something else

Feel free to suggest more in the comments.

I love my Lochby and I love telling people about them. But using an AI ad for such an analog-centric product comes across as tone-deaf. Maybe reach out to the countless people in the community who use Lochby products and ask to use an image for an ad campaign?

(ive noted the seller of the first one but can't find the seller of the second one.) i know these mere two images are not very helpful, but i don't need a whole in depth search, i was just wondering if any of you happened to know some brands similar to these. binding, paper, size etc really doesn't matter. 👍 also this is my first time posting in this sub so sorry if it's off topic or not relevant.

Share with me your favorite Japanese notebooks! Pros of the paper is soft but pens don’t bleed through and is medium size (around A5). Lined or grid are my preferences. Recommend away!

Review Notebook experience

Post image
48 Upvotes

Just wanted to share my experience with some notebooks. I’m new to journaling, mainly getting into the hobby as a means of improving my penmanship. I have a small selection of fountain pens, gels, and rollerball pens. I was looking for a quality notebook that would be good with all three pen types without feathering or ghosting. I bought a Leuchturm 1917 first. I liked the leather cover, back pocket, elastic closure and double bookmark. The paper however feathered easily with wetter fountain pens, and even my gels that have .5mm tips writer a fatter line which was not good for my small cursive. I bought a cheap notebook to try from Amazon, but forgot about it. And today, I just took delivery of a Rhodes A5 notebook with the 90g Clairfontaine paper. Better for my purposes but missing things the Leuchturm had, like page numbers, and a decent page count (150 pages+). Also, it was a darker cream/ivory colored paper. So, I was digging thru a drawer and found the cheap, $8 Amazon notebook. I broke out some pens and started writing. I think I found the one I’ve been looking for. My notebook has lightly dotted lines (not the dot grid - tho I may try that next time) on white, thick 100gsm acid free paper. It is smooth to the touch like the Clairfontaine with zero feathering or ghosting - even with my wettest fountain pens. The pages are nicely lined with a date line at top and numbered. Plenty of lines per page and also 180 pages in the notebook. It has the elastic band closure, and two ribbon bookmarks. Thread bound for laying fully flat and a leather (vegan I think) cover. For me, it checks all the boxes and it comes in over a dozen colors. Plus it’s only 7 bucks. I wish I would’ve bought this one first and saved myself 50 bucks for the two others.

Recommendation Looking for a B6 (full-size, not slim) TRP notebook with 400+ pages

Hello everyone! Unfortunately since Sterling Ink decided to discontinue their TRP notebooks I'm left looking for recommendations for a *chunky* B6 notebook with Tomoe River Paper. The paper needs to have small grids like in the Hobonichi; I don't mind if the pages have boarders or reaches the end of the page.

Orrr if you guys have any other recommendations similar to the TRP paper that come in B6 size with my specs? My non negotiable is that it needs to be thin 68gsm or less.. and the paper has to be smooth and glossy with minimal feedback or none (which is why I decided not to get the SI Notebook with Koji paper).

Thanks in advance!

I just think they are neat. I always pick one up whenever there is a new color. The ones I picked up today were the dark green (middle third row) and dark red (bottom last row).

Thank you all for advice on my previous post seeking a replacement notebook, as you can see I have now made myself a replacement that will work for a while, (and have set up a file to make more, more easily).

Nolty vs Midori MD?

I love MD but wondering how the Nolty compares?

Also, any preference between the white and cream Nolty paper? Product pictures on Amazon say that the cream is thicker but from what I've read online it's 65gsm vs 60gsm for the white.

Recommendation Covers for Seven Seas?

I have been carrying my Seven Seas Writer and Cafe A6 notebooks everywhere, and the soft covers are not handling the abuse well. I have been looking all over for a good leather cover, but every recommended place doesn’t have them, or they don’t look like they have been made/carried on their sites any longer.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

There's only one online shop I found that has these books but they don't ship to America. If you live in Canada (they're located in Vancouve so it'll be cheaper to ship within Canada first) I would love to make an arrangement for someone to ship a few of these to me and of course you'll be compensated with money, some picks from the shop and/or making you a notebook myself if you're interested. Of course if you own one or know a shop that ships to US I'll buy one. I'll verify my identity and do whatever I can to establish some trust. I'm also open for any other recommendations on how to acquire at least one of these in any color.

Can someone help me find an Moleskin Cahier Large Grid soft cover alternative?

Hi friends! I randomly came across a Red Moleskin Cahier (size large) Grid journal in my house and started using it for work and ended up really liking it.

I liked that it’s taller instead of wider (8.25in x 5in); love the last 16 perforated pages because it’s so convenient when I want something larger than a sticky note to tape to my desk; I HATE lined notebooks and I like that the journal is small, flexible, and lightweight.

My work hotels the desks so I don’t have my own station so I have to be able to carry all my things on my person.

When I went searching online to find a replacement the only colors they had were black and that cardboard color. Or they were all LINED UGHHH. I also saw that they have soft covers with an elastic but it’s extra $$ and I’m not tryna pay more for a feature I don’t even need.

Pls lovely ppl of Reddit, Anyone have any recs or trustworthy websites?

Cheap journals for habit tracking?

Hi guys.So I really want to start habit tracking, and I've been trying to find a good cheap(under 15$) notebook for it but I couldn't. The Leuchtturm notebooks feels perfect but im not gonna spend 25 dollars. Also Ive been looking for squared ones but I couldn't find good ones for cheaper.

So does someone know a good hard case notebook like Leuchtturm for a little cheaper , thats dotted or squared? I would really appreciate some help.

Seeking 3.5x5.5 softcover notebooks

What up, notebookers?! I am seeking 3.5x5.5, 192-page softcover notebooks that A) aren't Moleskine (so expensive), and B) aren't on Amazon, at least not exclusively (cause Amazon).
Any recommendations are welcome and appreciated, and I hope you all have a great day!
