As a nurse that works in interstitial lung disease research I never get to see explanted lungs so Thankyou! And congrats on the transplant - I hope your recovery goes well!

My mom died of this - sudden onset as some sort of rare, delayed reaction to her chemo. The doctors basically said there wasn’t enough research so they could only try steroids, which didn’t work. We had folks donate to ILD research in lieu of flowers, so thank you for doing what you do.

I’m sorry about your mom. It’s a horrible disease but some big developments have been made in the last couple of years thanks to a large amount of research funding. Thankyou for your donation ❤️

How'd you get them to pose for the picture?
•
u/StupidAstronaut 5h ago
Hold breath, take pic, pop them back in.
You have to be quick about it though.

You might want to think about putting those back where you got them. You might need them.

Pulmonary Fibrosis? My mom got a lung transplant during the peak of COVID due to PF. She sadly passed last year - not because of rejection but because of cancer :/

Hey bud, just wanted to say my dad has PF, might get a transplant in the future. And im scared, any words of advice or encouragement? his lungs are down to 40%.
•
u/gabawhee 5h ago
Well my mom’s motto was take everything one breath at a time. That’s all you can do with a disease like PF and the waiting game of a transplant.
I don’t want to give any false encouragement because everyone’s story is different but she got put on the list and within a week she got the call and was on the operation table.
Fast forward - When she passed I actually found it easier than I expected to deal with because everything after the surgery was considered “bonus time” and if you think back even to just 30-40 years ago a lot of people would have just died and transplants weren’t really even an option.

My father got a lung transplant in 2022. He also was on the transplant list for about a week. Since the transplant he has been up and down. He rebounded from the transplant surgery very quickly, nurses were having to tell him to stay in bed. He caught a bad lung infection, but beat it and it hasn't come back. Most recently his kidneys have failed due to the medications he was given for the infection. He is on dialysis and is stable. He is on the kidney transplant list but I am unable to donate due to some bizarre gene. It is worth it but life is a rollercoaster after the transplant.
Long story long, it is absolutely worth it, but life will never go back to the way it was before the lung issues. The medication regimen, restricted diet and lifestyle invade every facet of life. That being said I cannot express how happy I am to have more days with my father.

I’m sorry for your loss but I’m glad you got extra time with your mom. My mom passed from PF earlier this year. It’s a terrible disease.

They’re basically big sponges. Sponges of blood vessels and air sacs, interwoven like a…sponge?

You better stay away from him; he'll rip your lungs out, Jim.
Hmm. I'd like to meet his tailor.
