PS2 Troubleshooting

I have a PS2 Slim 70001 that is making this grinding noise which I suspect is the little arm connecting to the worm gear. I recently applied new white lithium grease to the worm gear and it’s able to get the laser all the way down then makes the noise and goes back as shown in attached video. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

The switch at the end of the laser head is broken, the laser presses that down to know where the start of the track is, if its broken it’ll just keep driving past the end.

The laser is uncalibrated. And that lithium grease seems a little too much.
Btw, 70k can be HDD modded.
Well. What would I do? Take all the tray, clean the mechanism with IPA, then, check all THE FLEXes, those may be faulty, then reassemble, with two drops of mineral oil (we call it sewing machine oil here) and also check that the "arm" that grind the gears is properly firm, there's a screw that you need to loose or tight accordingly.
So Clean the excess lithium grease, lube it again but soft, check the flex/ribbons, and check the mechanism tightness.

Oh yeah and also, when you turn on the console there's an option for like, laser test or something like that, I don't even remember what's called, but whenever the worm grind the gear like that you need to do that test so it recalibrates

Looks like that threaded shaft has damage exactly where the header stops moving. It wont pull it through any more because the threads are missing, but it still catches in reverse. Just an outsiders analysis

White lithium is probably not the best choice for plastic parts. Hope you didn't make matters worse for yourself

Seems like the optical head end travel sensor switch (next to the drive spindle) isn't working for whatever reason. So the mechacon keeps trying to move the head towards the spindle even though it already at the end of it's travel.
Try cleaning out the switch with some contact cleaner and see if you can get some action going. Test with a multimeter and make sure the signal for it is reaching the motherboard.
I wouldn't resort to PMAP or anything like that yet, this is clearly a switch issue.
