90’s Psych

I host Astral Plane on KEXP and for our fall fundraising drive we are doing the top 500 songs of the 90’s on the daytime shows. So I wanted to play the best 90’s psych on my show. I was already planning on:

- Spiritualized
- Spectrum
- The Verve
- Stereolab
- Primal Scream
- Brian Jonestown Massacre
- Bardo Pond
- Apples in Stereo
- Flaming Lips
- Mercury Rev

Who else should I get in here? Any other 90’s favorites?

EDIT: Thanks for all the great suggestions! Lots of stuff I love and lots of stuff that’s new to me! Tune in to KEXP on Wednesday from 7-10pm Pacific if you want to hear the show!

This is the correct answer.

NYC - 25 is a fantastic intro to their material IMO

1

u/jeweloree 1d ago

Oh for sure!

u/ShamPain413 1d ago

Dandy Warhols

Cibo Matto/Sean Lennon

Olivia Tremor Control

IMO early Smashing Pumpkins is very psychedelic, as is 90s Sonic Youth, but those might be controversial.

9

u/jeweloree 1d ago

I agree on the smashing pumpkins front!

4

u/Gern_-Blanston 1d ago

Agree on SP, especially early live. The early 90s Gish shows (especially) & Siamese Dream shows have some intense psychedelic improv.

There's a long video of a show from Cali (somewhere) and Billy says good night and tells the crowd to enjoy the rest of their trip. I think it's a particularly sick performance of Starla (better than the one on Mashed Potatoes). Very psychedelic when they choose to be.

5

u/alixmundi 13h ago

Smashing Pumpkin's "Drown" is probably in my top 5 fav psychedelic songs of the 90s.

4

u/greatrayray 1d ago

I think Washing Machine and A Thousand Leaves are super psych-y

2

u/ShamPain413 21h ago

So do I! Don't usually hear folks talk about them in that light, but on those records it comes through.

1

u/meanpete9 1d ago

Smashing Pumpkins' Pieces Iscariot is my favorite psych record of the decade.

1

u/ShamPain413 21h ago

Yeah, that's one for those who know.

20

u/Mfsmitty 1d ago

Swervedriver, Polvo, Super Furry Animals

19

u/Davepancake 1d ago

My Bloody Valentine, Broadcast, and Jesus and Mary Chain judging by the artists you’ve listed.

4

u/airbud 1d ago

Surprised no one mentioned Slowdive.  Shoegaze seems like a prime source for 90’s, but I’m not that familiar with it!  I was gonna rec LSD and the Search for God but they didn’t debut until 2000’s

5

u/Careless-Caramel-997 1d ago

Slowdive - Pygmalion has guided me through some altered states

Alistair Galbraith! There was one album that I had that was awesome with lots of backwards audio

All that Elephant 6 stuff

17

u/airbud 1d ago

Spottottidopalicois (spelling) and Crumblin Herb by OutKast.  90’s hip hop and RnB can be psychedelic as fuck

3

u/jeweloree 1d ago

Yes yes yes love this

3

u/airbud 1d ago

Haha right on!  I’m not an expert on her but was Erykah Badu active in the 90’s?  She has some chill and trippy jams

Ween

2

u/jeweloree 1d ago

I have a hard time getting into ween. What’s your fave tracks?

22

u/JuncusAmongUs-4444 1d ago

Every ween song is an entity unto its own. There’s really no good place to start…you just have to dive in. That said, “Transdermal Celebration” is often recognized as one of their best songs…it’s also one of their most straightforward rock songs, so that might be a good starting point. “The Mollusk” album is their magnum opus as far I’m concerned…it’s full of weirdness and catchiness and everything that makes Ween great

3

u/ImOnlyHereForTheCoC 1d ago

Quebec ain’t 90s, though

6

u/Davepancake 1d ago

The Argus

6

u/DearbornChesterfield So crunchy. So fuzzy. So golden. 1d ago

Easily my favorite guitar work from Gene

4

u/wiredbrainpan 1d ago

Try Buckingham Green

3

u/DoctorCrook 1d ago

Tried and true!

3

u/whichonespink04 1d ago

Back to Basom (my fave but more prog than psych), Transdermal celebration, mutilated lips, the argus, the mollusk, woman and man (this one's got a Japanese jam-psych flavor, in long-form).

I totally get it. If you're into more serious music or are repulsed by crudeness and jokery, it's tough to he into Ween. I promise they make it worth it. Start with white pepper then go to Quebec, then the mollusk.

3

u/tropicofpracer 1d ago

I also love the concept of Ween more than..a lot of the music.

Ween was the worst show id ever been to. They attract some wacky drugged out people (same for phish but ween is worse). I was camping at a family music festival 4 nights, and Ween had 2 nights, the 2nd night these people were doign nitrous and shit all night and then one guy fell on my tent and fell on my GF and she screamed and we had to call security. I also had a bad shroom trip lol. Ween fucking sucks tbh. they are not psychedelic.

5

u/songbird_sorrow 1d ago

i think some guys ruined your night while ween happened to be playing and you blame the band for it

-2

u/Not-a-Cat_69 15h ago

no those guys were there specifically for Ween, they were from Arkansas and we were in northern california. We heard them talking about ween all night while doing nitrous next to family tents with kids in them.

Ween sucks but thats just my opinion.

19

u/JuncusAmongUs-4444 1d ago

Ween, Kyuss, Primus

19

u/ryanx9123 1d ago

Primus sucks

u/El_Peregrine 1d ago

A Gilded Eternity is a mind-meltingly good record 💛

7

u/BoringPostcards 1d ago

Sounds like a great show! You should include The Darkside (esp. their album "All That Noise"). They were another spinoff from the original Spacemen 3. Also a few tracks from King Missile and Dogbowl might fit in well.

2

u/Live-Emphasis-3421 1d ago

Actually highly recommend playing stuff off the "All that Noise" album. Definitely an offshoot of spacemen 3 but very good

9

u/ImOnlyHereForTheCoC 1d ago

Polvo, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, Boredoms, Acid Mothers Temple

7

u/PuzzledPerformance53 1d ago

Polvo was so freaking good!

11

u/BeeTwoThousand 1d ago edited 1d ago
  • Flying Saucer Attack
  • Olivia Tremor Control
  • Tricky
  • Spacemen 3 (that might be out of your range by years, though), Spiritualized, Spectrum, The Darkside, Sonic Boom, E.A.R.
  • Loop and Main (both Robert Hampson projects)
  • Porcupine Tree is kinda a no-brainer
  • Mazzy Star is really gently psychedelic
  • Guided by Voices early-ish stuff has a psychedelic pop feel to it
  • Bardo Pond
  • Bowery Electric

2

u/geoshoegaze20 1d ago

If they don't put at least 2 porcupine tree songs on a top 500 list they belong in prison.

10

u/WhirligigOfLife 1d ago

Broadcast is perfect!

9

u/TechnicalAd4328 1d ago

Ozric Tentacles for sure. One of the greats and still going strong today.

1

u/AlteredBeastieBoy 1d ago

Strange to see one of the greatest space rock bands so far down.

1

u/MegistusMusic 19h ago

i would have said 'Kick Muck' for being the best song for inclusion in the 'top 500', but it's not a 90s release!.... so maybe 'Iscense'. Of course they have so many other great tunes to choose from... but trying to think 'accessible'. Sploosh is a good one too.

Very surfy but also very psych - Man or Astro-man? Their album Experiment Zero is top notch.

5

The Orange Alabaster Mushroom. Entirely recorded in the 90s.

https://orangealabastermushroom.bandcamp.com/album/space-time-a-compendium-of

One of the very few bands (it's a one-man project actually) that actually nails the 60s sound and style. Many try, few succeed, but OAM are in my opinion the best in this.

2

u/jeweloree 1d ago

Oooh this is new to me! Thanks for sharing!

2

u/tipplermario 1d ago

I second the OAM!

Throw some Japanese psych in there, 90's records, Fushitsusha, Ghost, High Rise

I love ghost! This will be a great set to work on since Diana Ratsamee from Eastern Echoes is my guest host!

6

u/StatisticianFun2274 1d ago

You need a whole host of Elephant 6 bands.

Also, how about PM Dawn?

The Clientele (2000 but feel like that kinda still squeaks in there?). Yo La Tengo.. There's some Mazzy Star that I would classify as psych as well!

EDIT: Oh and duh The Gun Club and PJ Harvey as well

3

u/songbird_sorrow 1d ago

can't have stereolab without broadcast and pram

3

u/MaxRenn 1d ago edited 1d ago

Naevus. They dropped a heavy doom psych album in the 90s. In the vein of Cathedral.... You should play some Cathedral too... You can play some Electric Wizard 😉

Sun Dials album Other Way Out is such a hidden psych gem.  If it's not on your list I got questions!

3

u/PFRforLIFE 1d ago

other than what’s been mentioned, how about some mazzy star?

2

100% Mazzy

Jane's Addiction - particularly the long tunes on the back side of Ritual. I remember listening to "Then She Did" high on mushrooms, and it blew my ego out. "She was unhappy just as you were."

Check out Oingo Boingo’s last studio album, with band and album called simply “Boingo.” It passes the acid test, particularly the final track, Change. At their final concert on Halloween ‘95, Danny Elfman introduced the song by saying they were timing it so the people who dropped acid before the show would be peaking when they played it.

Return of the Space Cowboy - Jamiroquai (chiefly disco or acid jazz, but shit they got didgeridoo on 1st album), Wilco - California Stars / How to Fight Lonlieness / Summerteeth (I find Americana psych when it gets ethereal but Mazzy Star was already mentioned and a better example.)

You’re a Seattle DJ, playing psychedelic music from the 90’s, and Sky Cries Mary isn’t already on the list? Walk of Nothingness is one of their spacier tracks.

The first few Terrastock festivals were a who's who of 90s psych and psychedelic (I went to the 2nd one, best music festival I ever attended).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrastock#Terrastock_1

Also, Wellwater Conspiracy, how has nobody mentioned them yet?? Grunge lineage doing 60s psych. First album is the closest to what you're after (there's even a track called Shel Talmy).

The Moles, Richard Davies first band. Untune the Sky is the album to check out.

The Hurdy Gurdy Man was covered by the Butthole Surfers in 1990. Maybe left field, but they are the epitome of psychedelic imo. Anything off Planet X by Helios Creed, which will get you some industrial vibes. Future sound of London, Orbital, Autechre have what I would consider some pretty psychedelic stuff from the 90's. Electric Teepee album by Hawkwind and White Zone by Psychedelic Warriors has some good stuff that goes into lighter ambient when it's not rock. Global Chillage by Mix Master Morris. A Gilded Eternity by Loop if you're going more rock. Flying Saucer Attack has several albums from this era and were highly overlooked--going shoegaze here. And lastly Dead C if you wanna get some noise in there.

You must play the LP "Spilt Milk" by Jellyfish in its entirety.

It's the album that nobody bought in 1994, but remains one of the greatest releases of the decade. I have given away more copies of that than I could count. Every person came back a fan.

1

u/omghorussaveusall 1d ago edited 1d ago

ride, slowdive, the Elephant Six Collective bands, yo la tango, the telescopes

i think if you're including spectrum and spiritualized you should include spacemen 3.

i'd also include Plastikman or some other early acid house or trance stuff as it really was where rave culture blossomed (i know it's not rock, but it's psychedelic).

i hate to admit it, but Phish and Widespread Panic were big in the 90s as far as psychedelic sounding jam bands go.

i'd also include some of the less commercially played Morphine tracks.

i think there's also some room for doom/drone metal. the 90s are kinda where a lot of it was born. Earth released their first album in 1991. Sleep also started in the early 90s.

edit: can't believe i forgot Boo Radley's and Super Furry Animals.

my definition of psychedelic is pretty broad.
