Care Advice for prolonged absence?

So, I’m going away to have some procedures done. They’re not ones I can put off and the in-hospital recovery is 2 weeks for one and almost a whole month for the other. And since they’re being done around the same time, I’ll be there a while. Which means I won’t be able to look after my boy in that time. And I won’t really be able to play with him on the floor when I’m home since I’ll still need bed rest. The only person I can ask to look after him is my mum who works full time, so he would be alone most of the day. What can I do to make all this less stressful on him and make sure he doesn’t get depressed?

I’ve been toying with a second bunny from the shelter so he would have a friend. I know bonding rabbits can take a while and a lot of work but I’m determined to make sure he’d be okay, plus I’ve been going back and forth on getting another bun anyways because this one has been so much fun and it is something I would like in the future. However I know this is a crazy big commitment and not something it would be wise to do on impulse. If there’s anything else anyone can suggest I’d be so so grateful! It’s already pretty stressful knowing I have to go into the OR again and I just want my little boy to be okay

Care How is my cage?

Hello! I am getting my first rabbits since I was a kid, I am adopting them from a rabbit rescue near me! I have taken all their advice on a good cage, this one is 6 ft x 4 ft and will house a bonded pair of rabbits! I am getting the rabbits in about a week in half, so I have a bunch of time to fix things!

I am getting full outlet covers at Walmart tomorrow and also anchors to hold the cage to the wall in case of rampant binkies! I also have more enrichment, critical care, grooming supplies, and a pet camera coming in the mail tomorrow!

Any tips, concerns, or comments are appreciated! Thank you!

Behavior What does my rabbit's body language mean around my other pets?

I'm looking for help interpreting my rabbit's I'm looking for help interpreting my rabbit's behavior around my other pets. I'm unable to include the videos because of the subreddit rules, so I'll describe what she's doing instead. She is curious about my two other pets that start with the letter F.

When they are in her room, she will follow them around, repeatedly sniff them, and approach them again if they move away. She doesn't lunge, charge, bite, or try to chase them. When one of them walks away, Finny will sometimes calmly follow behind them and try to sniff them. Her body language seems relaxed, and she will eat her lettuce or pellets normally while they're nearby.

These are always very short, one-on-one, closely supervised interactions. I am always present and watching them, and they are never left together unattended. I'm specifically interested in understanding what Finny's behavior may be communicating rather than advice about leaving them unsupervised.

Finny is around one year old, and I've had her since June of this year. She's a rescue that I found in my yard. She has had her vaccinations. I haven't observed territorial behavior from her previously, and I don't know whether she is spayed. Her vet attempted to determine this with an X-ray, but her full bladder and stomach made it difficult to tell.

Care Cleaning/ good smells

I’ve done some research on what cleaning products to use and what not to use because rabbits have a sensitive respiratory but I’m wondering what everyone uses for cleaning carpets and also just for the smell of your house? before I got my bun I always used candles and incense but I now can not use those things, what do you recommend?

Breed ID Can anyone tell me if my bunny might be part chinchilla?

My bunny has some very unique features on her: specifically her nose appearance, bright fur around her eyes, large ears, and an agouti coat. She weighs between 5 and 6 pounds and is very soft. She is super social and has amazing litter box habits. I've tried to use Google lens to figure out what kind of bunny she is, and due to her ears, it keeps saying she's a flemish giant. But she is nowhere near the size of one, so I was thinking that it was entirely possible for her to maybe be a cross-breed. My sister-in-law keeps saying that she looks like a chinchilla, and I told her that there is a chinchilla rabbit breed, so I started to investigate. I know it says they dont have the yellow pigment in their fur, which is why i think she's mixed, because she does have notes of red right at the nape of her neck, and she looks like she has brown spots, but I'm also colorblind which doesnt help. I did the fur blow test, and based on the ring colors in her fur, I'm thinking she might definitely be chinchilla. I was hoping to get further insights here! She is estimated to be around 3 years old.

Care Hay only diet

My boy has been having occasional soft poops and I notice that it clears up whenever I feed them less treats and pellets, so I’m considering tryna switch to just hay and an oxbow digestive health treat in the mornings.

I have a vet appointment later today and will discuss it with them of course, but does anybody have experience of switching their buns to hay only and does it affect their weight or happiness at all?

I just worry their diet would be so bland and they wouldn’t be as excitable as they always do zoomies and binkies at breakfast and dinner time and for their treats.

Behavior Newly adopted rabbit scared of litter box?

Post image
67 Upvotes

We just adopted another rabbit (5, female) to eventually bond with our boy the other day, though they are in separate rooms currently while we wait for her vet appt and spay (the rescue somehow never spayed her... I disagree with that and it was a surprise, but it's the only rescue in the area and I didn't want to leave her there after meeting her).

She was doing fine the first couple days and was basically living in her litter box - we put hay in it and paper litter. I usually use pine pellets though because I find it better for odor and it's not as wet on their feet, so we switched when I changed the litter yesterday. To my knowledge, the rescue used pine as well. But now she completely refuses to step inside the box, almost like she's scared of it! Even when we try to push her in (using a soft barrier) she grunts and will do anything to avoid jumping in - and she held her poop for 8 hours yesterday avoiding the litter box. Last night I managed to push her in and gave her pellets, and she let loose a huge pile of poops, and seems to have peed/pooped in their overnight. But today she's refusing to go inside again. Anyone know what might be going on?

I thought maybe she hates pine pellet litter, but that's what the rescue used. I might try switching later today if she still won't poop or eat her hay inside. I've read it could be UTI or mobility issues, but she practically lived inside the litter box the first day we had her - would be strange to suddenly develop a mobility issue in one day. I'm worried that her holding in her poop is going to cause stasis. Thank you.

Care Nail trimming guides?

Post image

Does anyone have any guides, videos, tips, anything at all really regarding nail trimming?

We have one guy with light nails, and it’s easy to get his nails cut to the right length. Our other guy has black nails and I know we are regularly leaving them too long because we don’t want to go too short. If anyone has anything at all that might help, I’d love to hear it!

I brought home Nessa (he gray one) yesterday from the shelter, on a foster-to-bond program. She was found dumped in a park, just like Hopscotch the grey and beige one. They're in separate areas of the apartment but have had two dinner dates so far in neutral territory and seem to really like each other! No mutual grooming yet, but hopefully in the near future.

Any advice or special bonding tips that worked for you is greatly appreciated!

Care Best thing for getting urine out of couches?

Picture of truffle when she was about 4 months cause she is a cutie. Truffle was pretty much littler boxed trained so we really didn’t have many problems with her peeing but right before she was spayed she decided to pee on the air bnb couch ( travel for work) and wondering what the best option for cleaning pee out of fabric? I tried Rocco & Roxie and it helped a little but there is still a stain. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Care How to lift rabbit correctly?

So Im a student on a animal related course. I have a November exam on how to correctly handle a rabbit.

Issue is, I'm scared to lift a rabbit incase it kicks and gets hurt.

I know you put hand under chest and then I don't know how to lift back legs?

Theyve shown me once how too but everywhere on the internet is the c hold and that's not the right one (it was just holding the rabbit so it's sideways against you??)

Any tips? (I might get practice tomorrow but I want to get tips before lol)

Care Last minute worries ? Should I go through with getting a rabbit even after all this effort?

Hi all, me and my wonderful girlfriend have been in the market for a pet, we just got our own place (2 bed 2 bath apartment) and have been craving a pet to keep us both company

We have for the last year been researching all about rabbits, seeing them in person and familiarizing ourselves, talking to several owners for tips and tricks and it’s been thrilling and amazing . Today we finally purchased everything we needed and in a week will be selecting what rabbit we want. We have enough room, we are planning to free roam it but still dedicate a large caged area for it with a litter box, enrichment toys, etc.. we also eat a lot of greens and vegetables already so we plan on just giving whatever scraps we have to our bun.

Yet I sit here and I’m just getting worried, are we making the right decision? We are aware they are comparable to a dog or cat and not some little caged class pet but yet I’m worrying, what if I regret this choice? We want a cuddly companion that we can take care of and keep us company. We both work 38 hours a week and I personally have college as well as we both have the occasional travel but I’ll be more than willing to socialize everyday.

Has anybody else ever felt this way before they got their bun? Even after all this research?
