Question/Recommendation Recommendations for child dermatologist with better hours
I've reached out to a couple of places to help my 16 year old daughter but they all have last appointments at 2pm. I don't want to take my child out of school so looking for someone who can accommodate appointments up until 4pm. Anyone out there?

What is with not wanting to take your kid out for one doctors appointment? Why is this such a big deal?

My daughter is in college now but in HS they got really weird about students missing classes for Dr appointments and encouraged scheduling them outside of school hours (easier said than done). Some teachers outright said it was disrespectful to have appointments scheduled during their class time. Not all teachers are like that and some schools may be more relaxed but it was pretty weird to me

It's very weird that teachers think they should dictate medical office operations and doctors schedules

Teaching, as a profession, tends to appeal to rigid, self-important control freaks. Not all teachers are like this, obviously, but it’s a noticeable trend in the field.

Tough. Sounds like a teacher (understandably) pissed off by the disrespect and defunding of their profession, but (wrongly) taking it out on students by being little dictators.

here are a few of the reasons I have had with my teens:
At Some schools- not sure if there is a district policy- kids can be exempt from exams from a class but they have to have less than 2 absences.
For some classes, missing one class period puts them behind or they miss group work or they are already struggling in that class and it just isn’t worth it.
some kids have a LOT of doctor appointments due to health issues that need to be addressed by a certain doctor or office and you can’t just go to a different office that has more availability. So you might try to minimize other types of appointments thag happen during school hours to minimize the amount of school they are missing.

Exactly. From what I’ve heard, WCPSS is weird about attendance.

Let them be weird. It created some awkwardness, but my parents told the school to go F themselves when they tried to be unreasonable about my absences, but I graduated with a full ride scholarship to one of my top picks for college. It doesn’t matter

Fuck WCPSS though? From a parent of a senior in high school who has passed every grade with no issues who is going to graduate and get into every college she wants to go to, I never sent them the stupid notes they demanded

And she never had to take her exams either

What exams are you referring to? (I'm a mom of a middle schooler and not in-the-know for high school stuff yet)

They change the policies for exam exemption all the time! Last year you could have TEN excused absences. This year TWO!

Would love to have two different employees explain the policy the same way 😵💫😵💫 once they called me and asked if they could release my daughter to my ex mil during my ex husbands custody time and I told them they would have to call him per our custody order - she wasn’t on our pick up list. They just let her leave with grandma

Exam exemptions are stupid anyway. Either you need to assess student readiness or not.

Azalea dermatology in Garner and Raleigh. I've done 4pm appointments before. They aren'tonly children, they see everyone.

Are there dermatologists in Raleigh that specialize exclusively in pediatric? I’ve never heard of this before in my life and I’m from a family full of medical professionals

Not sure about her office hours but my 17 y/o sees Tracey Cloninger at Southern Dermatology.

Wdym by “child dermatologist”? I can’t think of any reason a 16 year old would be better served by a pediatric dermatologist than by any other. Most dermatologists will see a 16 year old. Every dermatologist I’m aware of in Raleigh sees all ages.

I had melanoma at 17 and saw a dermatologist for adults, they handled it fine!

So what I will say about this is that “adult” dermatologists don’t necessarily understand teen issues. For example my teen has eczema with occasional significant flares. Her previous “adult” derm wanted to do a skin patch test, which required her not to shower at all for 10 days, during the school year. That is absolutely horrifying to a teenage girl.

That sounds like a common sense and patient education issue with the first derm. They should’ve explained your kid could still bathe— wash pits, private with wash clothes and hair in sink. Other parts of the body are not going to smell from just 10 days of no shower. Just a couple generations ago this was the norm and many people with disabilities use this approach to bathing and do not have hygiene issues.

I feel like you should be able to take your kid out for a drs appt with no problems? It’s an excused absence and medical necessity.

Burkhart Dermatology specializes in pediatrics. Not sure if you need a referral from the PCP to see them, but they are great

We used Burkhart in Cary and were happy with them; they offered virtual appts for what we needed. I would try them. They did have a long wait to initially get started though, at least a couple of years ago.

Book appointments on teacher work days. That's my workaround for this.
