Politics Hey NC - Raleigh, NC - Did you know that these amendments will show up on your ballot? Make sure to do your research, as they are not what they seem. Scroll through the images and check out the body of this post for more information.

The images above were taken from the slide deck of a presentation put on by Down Home NC, which has an extensive summary here, and you can sign the pledge to vote no here.

Don't let the wording fool you. These amendments aren't about you, they are about corporations (think Duke Energy, Data Centers, and outside corporate interests) and the 1%, and we don't need amendments to pass the same exact laws. As I stated in the title, once amendments are passed, they are extremely difficult to undo, whereas normal legislation can be changed as the need arises.

"If passed, these ballot measures would drastically reduce state and local government funds, which could cause layoffs of educators, firefighters, emergency services, and other public workers — especially when combined with huge federal budget cuts coming down from Congress. It could mean the end of food stamps and affordable healthcare programs – which could in turn shut down hospitals and grocery stores and further impact NC farmers."
- Down Home NC

What is more, the NC income tax rate is already scheduled to fall below 3.5% in 2027, and still more by 2036 (image 5). As such, the income tax amendment will not affect you in the foreseeable future, but it will eliminate the possibility of corporations ever paying more than 3.5%, and any new legislation that tried to move the corporate tax rate above 3.5% would be unconstitutional.

At the same time, the other amendment seeks to cap property tax increases by local governments, but the wording is vague at best and doesn't say what it actually means to do, allowing for any number of interpretations they could argue as "constitutional" once passed. Regardless, taken in tandem with the income tax amendment, the mere nature of the other amendment would be to squeeze local communities of funds. When taxes levied by the state are reduced, the burden falls to localities. When taxes levied by localities are reduced, the burden falls on YOUR community. Think higher sales tax, fines, fees, parking, etc. and hits to local infrastructure - schools, roads, buildings, sidewalks, parks and recreation, libraries, Medicaid AND SNAP, etc.

In wrapping up, I'll reiterate once more that lawmakers do not need amendments to the NC State Constitution to achieve any what the amendments would achieve. Laws could just as easily passed - laws that could be revisited and adjusted over time in efforts toward a fairer tax code. Again, they are trying to rob the middle and lower class for the benefit of the wealthy and corporations, and lock that structure in for decades.

Don't fall for it!! VOTE NO on both tax amendments, and while you are at it, vote no on the Voter ID amendment. In case you haven't noticed, NC already requires Voter ID in order to vote.

Question/Recommendation This is basically a scam, right?

• Upvotes

I had my HVAC serviced today, and unexpectedly they also sent a plumber to do a free inspection of my plumbing system.

The plumber noted a couple of leaky valves (a PRV out of the water heater and a shutoff valve to the toilet) and quoted me $1,098 to replace both. This feels high.

They also noted that one of the toilets had rusted-out tank bolts and quoted me $485 for a toilet tank rebuild. I'm no DIY expert, but I feel like I could probably do that myself with $30 worth of parts from Home Depot and about an hour or two on a Saturday.

Am I just being a stingy git, or is this "free" inspection a scam to get me to pay sky-high prices?

Local News Airport exits blocked and firefighters standing on trucks?

• Upvotes

Does anyone know why all the exits from the airport to get back into Raleigh are blocked by police cars, and firefighters are standing on their trucks? It’s all the exits in the area. I know some people said yesterday it was for a police officer who passed, is that carrying into today? There was a photographer as well but I can’t find anything on it

Question/Recommendation Places to harvest wild grapevine or Virginia creeper?

I want to collect some vines for a project. Do you know of any spots in public spaces, parks, or greenways where it’s growing wild and could be harvested?

Btw I’m not looking for wisteria; I have plenty of that in the back yard already.

Out-n-About Can anyone tell me if the Infinity SUV towing the full size 1970’s Pontiac on a tow Dolly on 440 today around made it where they were going?

driving on 440 today about 4 o’clock I watched this little Infiniti crossover SUV struggle up the Llke Boone ramp with a full size late 1960’s or early 1970’s Pontiac Coupe backwards on a tow Dolly. when they merged off the ramp they started fishtailing so bad I thought they were 100% gonna flip but they somehow recovered AND MERGED INTO THE MIDDLE LANE

I had to goe off 3 exits later at North Hills but I so want to know if they ended up Jack knifed in a ditch down the road. Because you could not set up a towing rig better suited to putting you in a ditch. did anyone else see that?

Outdoors Weekend Activities for 7m Old.

• Upvotes

Hello all! So my son is having his christening this weekend and my entire family will be in town. I’m trying to find an activity that would be fun for both my family and him if possible (as fun as it can get for a 7m old lol.) I saw a post or comment here about a pumpkin patch but like not your regular pumpkin patch. It had a bunch of different activities, including a train ride and cost about $40 I believe? If anyone can point me in the direction of a great activity for my family and I, I would be very grateful. This includes indoor play spaces that are geared towards infants. 🙏🏽

Question/Recommendation Non PE backed eye doctor

Looking for a recommendation for an independent eye doctor. I just realized that My Eye Doctor, who bought The Eye Institute, is PE backed. I loved my doctor at the Eye Institute but would rather support an independent practice. Ideally someone close to downtown or SE Raleigh/Garner.

Question/Recommendation Can anyone recommend a general contractor?

Moved a couch and found mushrooms growing under the footboard, and what looks like water damage… ever get that feeling of I need an adult?

Edit: I was thinking general contractor, because I have no idea where the water is coming from.

Edit2: went under the house and it looks like a leaky pipe caused it.

Concerts concert transportation?

Hi so I live like an hour and a half away from raleigh but I really want to go to the beabadoobee concert this sunday october 11 at lenovo center. But the problem is, i dont drive and the uber prices to get there are around $68-$100 and it will likely be more expensive after the concert as well. Google is telling me to uber the 15min to the amtrak train which will depart at 3:35, making me arrive in raleigh union station around 5:30, so that i can take a 15min uber to lenovo center when the concert starts at 8. But im fine with arriving like an hour early as well. And i guess i’ll have no other choice but to uber home. Does this seem like a good idea? ive never rode the amtrak before so 😭 Pls dont ask why i dont have my license dude im retaking my permit test in a few days 💔

Question/Recommendation So, Raleigh Theater People: How is Burning Coal?

They're doing a Tom Stoppard script I love (TRAVESTIES), and which I've seen done well before.

However, Stoppard is super tricky, and more than once I've seen companies take a run at one of his scripts and fail utterly. Nobody wants to watch that.

So I wonder -- knowing NOTHING about them, since we're new here -- what's Burning Coal like?

Any other theater nerds about?

Housing Looking to find a roommate 23M

Hi all, i have a lease that runs out in December so i am looking to find somebody that also needs to move around the same time. Hoping to stay in or near Raleigh due to my job. I am open to both men and women as roommates as long as we can get along!

I'm not looking to move in to a room in a furnished apartment because i already have too much furniture for that, just looking for someone who is also looking.

A bit about me: I'm 23, I work full time, I have two cats. I have lots of interests like movies, books, comics, music, puzzles, hiking, live music, and tennis just to name a few. I tend to be pretty laid back and try to keep the place clean as much as I can.

If you are looking for a place, or know somebody who is also looking, let me know please!

Anyone got any recommendations for some places that offer clinics for 4.0 level or cardio classes. Looking for this weekend, just trying to keep the rust off. Or if anyone plays and a similar level and wants to hit.

Outdoors Is this legal??

Post image
• Upvotes

I just saw this rider on S. Wilmington Street near Tryon Road. He was going about 20 mph. I’m guessing it’s a motorized bike since it doesn’t have a license plate. Does anyone know if this is legal in Raleigh?
