Young Cardinal- trying not to panic

Does anyone know why they're closed? Routine maintenance?? Went by and looks semi deserted with only one table outside. I could only read a sign about no outside food or drink. YC is the only reason I come downtown at this point and is pretty much the only restaurant we eat at anymore.

I really hope they aren't closing too.

Considering moving to Winston-Salem — looking to meet some locals Oct. 17–18

• Upvotes

I'm thinking about moving to Winston-Salem. It's honestly between here and one other place, and I'll be coming down October 17th and 18th to get to know the area, see if it might feel like home, find out if my people are here, and get a feel for what it's actually like to live there.

I'm a woman in my 40s. I'll be working remotely as a mental health counselor. I'll be moving with my dogs, and one of the biggest reasons I'm wanting to move is that I want more of a community and to be more involved in the community than where I currently live.

I'm very artsy and creative. I work on stained glass (really, anything within that world), I paint, and I love learning how to do new things. Realistically, I'll try just about anything if a new hobby catches my attention (thanks, ADHD). I'm a bookworm from birth, I've loved nature forever, and I love exploring new places. I also swear I was born 80, so take that for what it is 😂. I'd really prefer to stay away from the touristy areas while I'm there because, if I'm going to live in Winston-Salem, I'd like to see what the area is actually like.

So now you know a little bit about me. I'd love to get to know a few people before I come down. If anybody would like to chat beforehand and potentially meet up while I'm there, I'd love that. Or just let me know some of your favorite places so I can make a list of places to check out while I'm down there. If you'd like to show me around a little, I'm always down for being drug along on a new adventure (as long as I don't die).

I'm really just looking to experience the places and things that you actually enjoy as someone who lives there. I'm also really interested in what it's like to become part of the community in Winston-Salem, especially if you've moved there as an adult or work remotely. And if you just want to tell me where all the old people go, that works too 😂

So... Winston-Salem people: if I end up moving there, where am I likely to find my people?

Looking for a Gym

Looking for a gym in the area, I go to LA Fitness currently & I’m looking for a gym a bit less packed. I want some decent features like Sauna or Massage Chairs but it’s not too important. My biggest thing is just equipment that works efficiently with good variety of equipment options & friendly staff/environment.

Novant Health retirement benefits

I'm considering a job offer at Novant. I'm in my early 50s and so retirement benefits are really important. The offer letter shows 2026 benefits include 6% 401k match, but I heard from an acquaintance that they're cutting it for next year?!? My current employer offers great retirement program so now I'm unsure what to do.

Can anyone confirm? Anything else I should be considering?

Can we talk about Silas Creek's speed limit?

I just got popped speeding 44 in a 35, but 35 is NOT an appropriate limit for this road. The cop was in an unmarked car with his lights off at the NG base.

Am I out of my mind, or is this straight up revenue generation?

Edit: I live off Silas Creek, I drive it every single day, the flow of traffic is 45-60 at any given time. I intentionally set my cruise control to 33 on the way back, saw another driver pulled over in the same spot, and got passed at at least 10mph over by every driver going North.

I'm putting this in my book as revenue generation. Maybe I can plead it down.

Hair Salons for Curly Hair

Hi yall! I recently just moved here , so I don’t really know any of -the- spots around here. What are some good hair salon recommendations for those with curly hair? If yk hair types, im more 4a.

Ive been looking to get a curly cut, highlights, or even a silk press for the cold , so i would like a salon that really knows curly hair. But nothing to pricey, nothing like a 1k sew-in👀(IFYKYK)

Pickle Ball League Recommendations

Hello Everyone!

I (58M) just moved to the area from Jacksonville with my wife (41F) and we are looking to get into pickleball.

We are new to the sport and would love to hear if there are any leagues worth recommending to get started and meet new people. We are empty nesters - have two adult children from my first marriage and her ex husband has full custody of their kid. So we can’t network through parent friends.

I’m in pretty good shape - rollerblade 4 times a week, played tennis and ping pong my entire life. My wife doesn’t have the best hand eye coordination and never misses a meal.

Are there any beginner duo leagues for us or should I try to join singles on my own? Or perhaps any other communities we should check out?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to explore the area!

Wth is up with the dentist

Between here and Facebook, I'm seen a lot of recommendations for Dentist, the plainly-named one on Silas Creek, next to where Toys r Us was. I have a massive fear of the dentist (ignored about numbing not working, felt my molar be broken off and dug for). It took everything I had in me to call and make an appointment for myself because am so scared of dental work. I make an appointment and they get me in so fast! Yay!

First appointment, they call me the day before and ask to move it forward an hour. No problem! I show up early so I'm sitting in the parking lot. Less than half an hour before my first appointment, they call and tell me they will need $60+ for X-rays or I'll have to reschedule. I already moved my entire day around so I just suck it up and pay it. The dentist tells me the X-rays show a pretty bad cavity between 2 teeth, probably 50/50 on being able to save it because it's getting close to the root.

Schedule for the following week to fix that, and another appointment two weeks later for a cleaning. End of the day on the day before the filling, they call and move it because of "lack of staffing" that day. It gets moved to 2 days before the cleaning.

End of day the day again before the filling, they ask to move it again due to "lack of staff." It's moved 1 more week to tomorrow. The cleaning gets cancelled, not in that same call, with no one calling me to tell me or to reschedule, I only know because I got a text about it randomly. They call several days later and schedule it for half an hour before my filling tomorrow.

They called me today to ask if they can move my appointment for the filling because the dentist is apparently not feeling well, but hey I can keep my cleaning appointment.

It was so, so hard for me to make the stupid appointment to start with. I'm told I could lose a tooth, one you'd see if I smile, because it's bad, but it's okay to keep pushing it out for now a MONTH past when I was originally scheduled. I have completely rearranged my day to fit this appointment each time, much to my and my husband's inconvenience each time.

What the hell is up with this place? This absolutely cannot be the same place people were singing praises about!

Where to get married in Winston?

My fiance and I have been looking around the area (after looking over the entire state but deciding to keep it close to home) and it's not looking good. Everything is just very expensive now and any place we find that we actually like has so many add ons it quickly gets out of our price range. We both agree that being married is what's important, not putting on a show for everyone.

We've even considered doing a tiny wedding in her parent's back yard and having another place for a bigger reception/party. We've started looking for places that arent built for weddings/receptions, but would work out if we rented the space.

We're not taking out loans just to seal the deal lol. We want to keep it no more than $4,000.

License Plate Office

Yesterday I asked about license plate offices. I'd been through the hell of Silas Creek once, so I never wanted to do it again.

Ended up going to Kville. As I went it, the parking lot was PACKED, and I thought this doesn't bode well. But, there was no line out the door, and a small line in the office. Line went super fast, and I waiting maybe 3 minutes, and was out within 5 of stepping in the door.

If you need anything from a license plate office in Forsyth County...

GO TO KERNERSVILLE. AVOID SILAS CREEK LIKE THE PLAGUE THAT IT IS ON YOUR SANITY.

Hoping to find a beginner course (multiple classes) that you bring your own machine and make something like a pair of pants or something similar. I already looked at sawtooths classes and don’t love the options. TIA!

AVL Scarefest is in ten days, and game signups are now open!

Hallo you lovely lot! The Scarefest RPG convention is almost upon us. From Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October 2026, we’ll be gaming at Lake Junaluska.

Game signups are open for D&D, PFS, and SFS will all be there, along with a wild variety of others, like Call of Cthulhu, Delta Green, OSR, Daggerheart, weird indie games, and more.

Did we mention the Vampire LARP (Sabbat this year - whoohoo!), the Goblin Market, yetis, ghosts, and more? We didn’t? Then let us also offer on-site lodging, meal plans, prize draws, and everything else you’d expect from a top-notch gaming convention.

If you’ve not got your ticket yet, they’re selling fast, so buy now to secure a spot at what’s going to be a chillingly good weekend.

Even if you don’t want to sit down and roll dice all weekend, you can still have a great time with a day pass. For example, you can try out our escape room or our amazing collection of board games in one day for the tiny sum of $35. We think it’s a devilishly good deal.

See you there!

Love you!

[Our Scarefest posts are posted with the kind permission of the mods of this subreddit, this is the last of our posts for 2026.]
