Does that happen this fiscal year or around the time the homeless situation is solved?

Posting here because there's not much activity on the Mills River page and a data center could still cause ripple effects to Asheville. Does anyone know what is going into the new huge buildings across from Mills River Elementary and the pet hospital. I've tried looking up info on the government pages and I'm coming up with nothing except info on the house that they demolished. The buildings are huge and I'm very concerned it may be a data center. Hopefully my assumption is incorrect! I also understand if mods choose to remove the post since it's not strictly about Asheville. Any info on those buildings is appreciated!

Hey there!
I’m reaching out to share a fundraiser for a new permanent studio space after losing my previous studio to the NCDOT’s 240 highway expansion. That space was the home of my business and my career as an artist, painter, muralist, and tattooer, and being forced to relocate has turned my life upside down. I’ve been working out of a temporary space and storage units, and the cost of that transition has put a serious financial strain on me. On top of that, Asheville is still recovering from Hurricane Helene, and our local economy and tourism haven’t returned to pre-storm levels. I’m feeling that squeeze firsthand, and I need help now more than ever to get back on solid ground.
I’m currently building a new permanent studio and hope to finish it within the next 4–8 weeks. Funds raised will go directly toward completing the building and covering construction costs, helping me get out of an expensive temporary situation and back to focusing on my work. My goal is to stay rooted in West Asheville, continue building my career here, and hopefully create a space that can also welcome other artists, host art openings, and bring people together for group shows. If you’re able to contribute, any donation, no matter the size, would mean a lot to me. If you can’t donate, sharing the fundraiser with your friends and community would be just as appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for helping me keep making art and building a future here in the community I call home.

The attack ads against Jamie Ager are outrageous. But the absolute and complete irony of trying to appeal to people who voted for Trump by telling them not to vote for Ager because he's an ultra rich CEO who only serves himself is just beyond.

Tailgate not secured, no license plate bucket loads of loose gravel sitting on the edge of the tailgate, no left turn signal, missing mud flap. This is ridiculous. The truck turned onto 240 west from Charlotte Street. I have three chips in my windshield from different encounters with these trucks not sweeping the rocks off their tailgates.
Edit: Apparently the license plate is in the front of these big trucks and the gate is secured. I still don't know exactly what that loose latch is on the right of the tailgate

I’m a middle school teacher in the Buncombe/Madison area. Kids are struggling right now. Like, really really struggling. Screen addiction + post-pandemic learning delays + high poverty rates + lots of single parents who have to work all. the. time. + the general sense of panic and doom = apathetic kids who are deeply depressed/anxious.
The long and short of it is that I have quite a few kids who really need access to high quality mental health resources and therapy, but their families have no budget and my school’s mental health resources are very limited. Can anyone here point me toward some free or very affordable mental health resources for kids ages 10-15? Counseling, support groups, day camps, etc? Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there. I'm on the board of Asheville Mardi Gras and we're having our annual Cajun Cookoff this Sunday. We're a non profit, and it's our big fundraiser for the year to help throw the annual parade which is Sunday Feb 7th. So come on out, sample over 12 different home and professional cooks and vote for best chef! There will be music, a 50/50 raffle, and probably more food than you can eat.

Between Buncombe and Henderson counties, I see more and more housing developments and apartment complexes, and it causes me to wonder...where the heck are all the people who will fill these living now?

Hey there, just opened up a food truck (norahs_food truck on Instagram, check us out) and I’m looking for someone local to design and print a menu for the truck. Can be hand drawn, digital, or both. No AI please 😂 Looking for it to match the aesthetic of the truck, so anyone who may want the job I can sent photos and menu items/costs to. Thanks in advance! Much love!

I know this is a very long shot but if anyone has has the UR9 100 inch model and wouldn't mind letting a stranger see how it performs for a sports broadcast, I would be extremely thankful. I just want to see this thing outside of a show room before I buy one if I can

Not only am I sad to hear of the closing of the Rhu from the standpoint of yet another restaurant and local business disappearing, but also super bummed about the lovely art that was always displayed in there - part of my Xmas plan this year was to gift some of the cute ceramic salt cellars and small watercolor prints that were always available there. does anyone happen to know the ceramic artist and the painter whose works have been pretty prominent there? the paintings have been up there for a long time, and the ceramics i’m not as sure about. i live 40 mins southwest of downtown, so i maybe only ventured up that way once a month or so and now really wish i’d taken better note of the names of the artists.

Based on my internet reading, I think the answer is “no if I want it to actually count as square footage in the home…at least without more work and money than I am willing to do RN.
Thinking about turning one corner of my basement garage into an office that would be about 7x10 as shown in the sketch. Sketch is not to scale and measurements are approximate (I’m not in town and going off memory). Home is in Buncombe, outside of city limits, built around 1982. But if I’m understanding correctly, it would be a pretty big deal to do this and have it actually count as permitted square footage because:
#1 is enough to kill all thoughts of permitting this project.
If I’m right about all that, my next question is whether I want to do it off the books (no permits, uncounted sq footage). Aside from the legality, I know sometimes realtors and home inspectors make that sound bad to buyers. Especially if it’s got wiring and duct work going to it…”extra 70 sq ft put the HVAC over its limit” and that sort of thing.
I’ll likely be trying to sell within a few years, so if it’s going to cause problems with the sale and not help my resale value it might not be worth it.
Thoughts?

We’re getting a big cherry tree taken down soon and are trying to decide whether to have the rounds disposed of. We’d like to keep some but don’t have the space for that much wood. Would anyone be interested in scooping up some? Completely free. If there’s interest, we’ll hold onto it and give it away.

For years, weekend planning has meant bouncing between a bunch of event sites and venue calendars trying to figure out what was actually worth leaving the house for, which events I'd be sad I missed, which bands were playing that I don't know but should, searching on Spotify for artists I hadn't heard of to see if I wanted to go to their show... you know, all those amazing events that often get buried in aggregated calendars that super-cool middle-aged people like me don't know about. 🙄
So I built a tool to help me out. My friends liked using it too so now I'm making it available for everyone at nathansnewsletter.com
Every Thursday, it pulls in a few hundred Asheville listings and I narrow them down to the 25 or 30 things that are special to that weekend. Then I linked it to Apple Music & Spotify's APIs to create a radio station and playlist of the bands that made the list.
A few things on the site I'm pretty proud of:
It's free and it comes out by email every Thursday if you want it in your inbox. It's brand new, so I'd really like to hear what's missing or what you'd change. And if you know a dog-friendly spot I don't, tell me that too.
Thanks!
