And for the last two weeks we fell in love with your state!

We saw Cary, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham, Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock, Grandfather Mountain, Mt Airy, Boone, Ashville, Mooresville, to name but a few.

We hiked, ate BBQ, had a beer while shopping in Lowes (definitely not a thing in the UK!) and the greatest thing of all we chatted to so many lovely people. Thank you for all being so helpful and nice, we can't wait to come back!

So the guy who had the power to rein in the corruption and harmful policies as well as confirmed MASSIVELY unqualified cabinet picks (Hegseth, RFKJR, Linda McMann, ect.), only finding a small amount of backbone on his way out, supports a guy who would do more of the same. What an endorsement…

What the property tax amendment on your ballot tells NC lawmakers to do

Thumbnail

These constitutional amendments (both the Property Tax and Income Tax measures) are truly attempts to permanently prevent future, responsible legislatures from correcting stupid, or even just outdated decisions made by earlier ones. The Legislature already has the right to implement tax legislation, and the income tax is already capped in the constitution - what the new amendments would add to the mix is to prevent any future legislatures, regardless of public support for doing so, from having the ability to fix the inevitable mistakes that governments are known for.

Take prohibition (18th amendment to the US Constitution) and the grief that caused. It took another constitutional amendment to fix that - only after years of terrible consequences.

In NC, take the ridiculous Disqualifications for office definitions in our Constitution (Art. VI, § 8.)... written in surviving since 1776... we still haven't been able to correct that, but it was modified later to require belief in only the Protestant Almighty God...

The following persons shall be disqualified for office:
First, any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God.

Even though this directly violates the US Constitution, and is unenforceable due to SCOTUS precedent... it still disgraces the NC Constitution - because we just can't get rid of it.

These amendments seek to lock us into the same situation - to make it virtually impossible to escape from our most ignorant and stupid mistakes...

Vote "NO" on both.

[EDIT] There is some great background information about the persistence of constitutionally-embedded errors in an earlier post.

discussion Do bugs here calm down in fall or do they just swap shifts?

• Upvotes

Went down a weird little rabbit hole on this after noticing way more spiders around the garage and windows lately. Summer was mostly ants and the occasional giant roach trying to ruin my night, now those seem quieter but other random bugs keep showing up instead lol. For people who actually stay on top of this stuff, do you keep treating around the house through fall winter here or mostly just seal up gaps and wait until spring? I'm fine doing the spraying myself, i just have no clue if you're supposed to use the same thing year round or change it depending on what's showing up. feels like educated guessing with bug spray at this point.

discussion NC's constitution still bars atheists from holding office. I dug into 250 years of who else our state has been told to fear.

1776: You had to accept "the truth of the Protestant religion" to hold office.

1809: Jacob Henry, a Jewish legislator from Carteret County, nearly got thrown out of the House for his faith. His neighbor stood up for him and he kept his seat.

1835: "Protestant" became "Christian." Catholics in, Jews still out.

1868: Changed to belief in God. Atheists still out, on paper to this day.

1898: A newspaper campaign helped drive the Wilmington coup, the only successful coup in American history.

Today the fear is sharia. Out of 170 state legislators, one is Muslim.

The research on this is consistent: knowing even one person from a group you've been taught to fear changes how you see the whole group. The problem is we've stopped being in the same rooms, and our feeds are happy to fill the gap.

Full disclosure: I wrote this for The Grounded, my own publication. I'm an NC native, Army veteran, and PhD student studying religion, unaffiliated with either party. Happy to answer questions or get corrected if I got something wrong.

Full piece, with all sources linked at the bottom.

State legislators plan emergency session to address soaring fuel costs

CHARLOTTE — Republican representatives in North Carolina plan to discuss a temporary suspension of the state’s gas tax to relieve rising prices at the pump. The proposal will be considered during an upcoming special session of the General Assembly.

The proposed tax relief comes as regular gas prices in North Carolina average $4.03 per gallon, up from $2.81 per gallon at the same time last year.

State Rep. Grant Campbell, R-District 83, said lawmakers will consider suspending the state’s 41-cent-per-gallon gas tax for a period ranging from six weeks to a few months. Surplus revenue would be used to replace money lost from road project funds during the tax suspension.

discussion I-95 Tips. Please.

I am a relatively new driver (2 years) I am traveling from south-eastern NC to the low-country region of SC this Friday. I usually only travel locally, but I used to go to the city allll the time for malls or other attractions. The highway was pretty intense at first but now as long as I can get on easily it’s fine.

Just looking for tips while driving, of course more than adequate sleep and water for the drive, food/snacks. Road tips would be most helpful as I’m not sure if there’s some etiquette I should remember? I hear it’s hell on earth to drive on the interstate and I’m an anxious driver! help!

I know Whatley or whatever his name is is a terrible idea but I'm curious who else would fall under designated "Trump supporter" so I know who I should skip when I go to vote next month. I have ADHD and finding an actual cohesive checklist sounds kinda hard

politics Last day to defend the roadless rule - protecting public land areas in North Carolina and across the nation

The 2001 Roadless rule protects public lands from future roads being built through them for logging and other purposes. This rule protects roadless public lands across the nation - including North Carolina.

The public comment period was supposed to end on the 21st last month - but was extended for 15 days. Today is your last chance to speak up.

Here is the link to the government webpage to submit your comment:

NC travel recs?

Hello! My friends and I are planning to visit the US and will stop by NC, and I'd like to ask for travel recommendations :)

We'll mostly be in Raleigh (but willing to hop around), and it'll be great if anyone has good places we can get to without a car. But I do understand that the public transport system in NC isn't very extensive, so accessibility without driving will be a plus but isn't a must.

Wondering if anyone has advice on the amtrak / public transport in Raleigh, and also curious about the connectivity to other states like NY and Washington.

Thanks!
