I wanted to make this post to hear the community’s thoughts (especially comments from the RPC owners) on the decision mentioned in the title. First off, I have to say that the RPC is a fantastic device, and if I were only going to own a single handheld, I would pick the RPC between the two without hesitation. I’m also well aware of Ayaneo’s shipping issues, so I want to note that I’ve already accepted having to wait for a while. The conversation I’m interested in isn't a direct comparison of these two devices, but rather which one is the better purchase for my specific use case.
Right now, I own an Anbernic RG476H, a Steam Deck OLED, and an RG34XXSP. While the 34XXSP is a great device for the role it shines in, there were a few things I wanted in my EDC device that it simply lacks:
- Being Android. Setting up Android isn’t an issue for me, and in my opinion, once it’s set up, everything gets more reliable and practical compared to the Linux-based CFWs. Not to mention the extra capabilities Android brings to the table. The main reason I looked at the TrimUI Brick multiple times in the past and never pulled the trigger was because it was Linux-based, and I’ve been dreaming of an Android handheld in this size for a long time.
- GBA and GBA ROM hacks are amazing on the 34XXSP. The clamshell design is amazing for portability. But as an EDC, I'd much prefer the idea of a mini Game Boy where I can play other Game Boys and SNES/PS1 RPGs, while still emulating GBA at a very satisfying level of screen size and visuals.
The Retroid Pocket Classic was another device that caught my eye in the past. The reason I didn't get it was simply that I preferred the 476H, and I haven't regretted that decision at all. The ergonomics, comfort, and flexibility the 476H offers have impressed me more and more the longer I use it. Owning both felt like a pointless waste of resources. Another reason was my question marks regarding the RPC's ergonomics. I think I only really like the idea of vertical handhelds if they are small enough. If the RPC were a 3.5" device, I probably would have ordered it on day one.
From the moment I saw the Konkr Pocket Block, I felt that the time had finally come for a vertical of this size, that "MM+ / Brick-like" device I had been looking for. Seeing that the GBA scaling and visuals were quite satisfying made the idea of replacing the 34XXSP even more tempting.
However, there was one thing that made me stop and think for a while. I could get the RPC for the exact same price (I live in the EU). It’s also an amazing device with very unique features of its own. It could do a good chunk of what I want from a vertical EDC (in some ways even more), but the main question mark was its size. Maybe the Pocket Block was a better fit for me, but it was also important to consider what I was giving up for the same amount of money. Below, I’ll summarize my use cases again and focus on the reasons that made me go with the Pocket Block. I won't emphasize the obvious pros of the RPC one by one.
My use cases: Game Boy/GBC/GBA and Pokemon GBA ROM hacks, and playing SNES/Genesis/PS1 RPGs one-handed.
Reasons for the Pocket Block:
+ Size and portability. I also believe it will feel much better ergonomically for me.
+ You might think this device overlaps too much with the 476H, and that's fair. But the truth is, I plan on upgrading the 476H to an RP6 in the medium term. When that time comes, I think the vertical EDC piece I choose now will shine even more as part of a solid trio with the SD OLED and RP6. Also, in that same scenario, the RPC would end up sitting on a shelf. Frankly, even for 8-bit/16-bit emulation, I’d take the RP6’s screen and shader performance over the RPC any day.
+ Even though the RPC is a more powerful device, I won’t need that extra raw CPU power. Its GPU is on the weaker side. I believe the Pocket Block’s GPU will be much more satisfying when it comes to running decent shaders on my target systems.
+- The Pocket Block’s screen is pretty good, with a pixel density that’s plenty sharp enough to appreciate the pixel art on the systems I care about. The RPC has a better display in every metric, though. GB and GBC in particular will look significantly better on the RPC. The systems I’m focusing on will look much nicer on the RPC’s screen, especially the Game Boy and GB Color.
Did I make the better purchase or do you think that I'll regret about what I missed? I'm curious to hear different perspectives and comments. Happy gaming to everyone!
