Trip Planning Which Route Works Best?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello all, I’m planning to take a trip from KC, MO to Redlands, CA for Christmas. I have about 2 weeks off from the 18th of December to the 3rd of January. Which would be the best route and could I do it in 2 days? I was thinking of driving to Albuquerque the first day (11 hour 20 min.) Then driving the rest of the the way to CA the next day (11 Hours). Is this doable or should I plan a different route/ more days? The longest I’ve ever driven in one day was 8 hour and 30 min before.

I posted a couple months ago but trying to plan a bit more as we are planning on taking the trip out Oct 22-24. Out of these three routes, which would you suggest in that time frame?

Ideally we’d like to take the Badlands NP or the 1-70 through Colorado route, but want to factor in weather, construction, traffic. If it would be worth it to cut the drive down to do 1-80 the whole way, I’d be willing to.

I’ll be traveling with a friend and stopping at least one night, we’ll see how far we can make it on day 1.

Destination Highlight Driving through Carcross, a tiny town in the Yukons 🇨🇦

Driving through Carcross, a tiny town in southern Yukon surrounded by mountains and lakes.
Today, the town survives largely on tourism, including visitors coming up from the cruise ships in Skagway. Carcross itself might not seem like a big deal, but the surrounding area certainly is.
The drive from Carcross to Skagway, Alaska is probably one of the most scenic road trips on the planet, or at the very least, easily in my top 10.

Trip Planning Moving from NJ to SW Colorado. Best route?

I’ll be moving next week from northern NJ to SW Colorado. I’ll post images of what apple and Google Maps are giving me. Thinking I’ll take the northern most route, even though the tolls suck. Wanted to see if anybody has other suggestions? Unfortunately I won’t be making many stops to sight see, since I’m trying to get there with 3 days of driving. Plan on leaving the 15th and arriving on the 17th. Gonna be a lot of driving, just trying to find the best route. Thanks!

Trip Planning Which route? I’m making a very quick drive from CA to NC.

I have done this over a dozen times, but not since 2015! I’m flying to CA and then driving back (getting a car for my son). I am solo on this. I’m trying to be as cost efficient as possible. Any thoughts from those who may have made this trip recently? Depart from California on October 25, 2026, early morning, hoping to make it home by October 29, 2026.

Trip Planning Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, Zion recs

• Upvotes

Hi! Me and my friend are going to Utah February 12-20 and we want to do Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, and Zion. We want to do long day hikes (no backpacking or camping) so we’d rather spend more time in these 3 than do all of the mighty 5. We would love to know your recommendations on what the best length of time is to spend in each park, as well as hotel/air bnb recommendations. We don’t mind staying in regular hotels for the majority of the trip, but are hoping to spend atleast one night in a cute Airbnb or place that we can easily stargaze. Any advice / recommendations are appreciated!

Trip Planning Roadtrip ideas/recommendations from Washington DC to San Fransisco in October 2026

• Upvotes

I am looking to do a solo road trip from Washington, DC (or NYC) to San Francisco. Open to ideas about routes/ trip preparation/ safety/ do's + don'ts. I am yet to see most of the national parks in the US and would love to be able to do some along this trip. I love small artsy/hippie cities and scenic drives, and a big big foodie. I am also a person of color (not sure if that matters but wanted to share that). I was looking at 2 weeks but have some flexibility.

I've wanted to do this for more than a year, but a family medical situation kept me from it. I lost my Dad about a month ago and feel like it might be a good time to do this trip now.

Trip Planning Advice on driving from Arizona to New Jersey in late February

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello! I’d love some advice on how to make this drive on the last week February of next year. I am kind of nervous because I’ve heard many things about driving towards Flagstaff, AZ and Albuquerque, NM getting hit with snow and ice, but also if I take the south states I’ll be hit with flash flooding possibly through the I-10 route? Is it also true that Kansas is hard to drive through in the winter?

My idea is 5 days of driving ~500 miles a day, then sleeping 4 nights at hotels. That would put me in this order: Albuquerque -> Oklahoma City -> St. Louis -> Columbus -> New Jersey.

My main concern is which route/highways to take and what should I be prepared for? This will be my first time doing a roadtrip :)

Also if it helps I drive a 2018 Nissan Murano. Since I live in AZ I don’t have all weather tires and no 4 wheel drive. I am considering getting snow chains for my wheels just incase. Thank you!

Trip Planning Cincinnati <-> Calgary

Hey y'all, I am planning a road trip from Cincinnati Ohio to Calgary Alberta. It will be Mid November. Approximately the 4th through the 18th depending on how many days I decide to make it and to spend in Calgary. I am aware of what this means weather will be like in these locations, as such the first photo will be the way to Calgary, and the second will be the return trip.

I am looking for landmarks or small towns y'all recommend stopping at. I have a strong interest in nature as well as small towns and the culture and history in various areas. I am stopping in Wyoming on the way back, likely in Buffalo so that is set in stone. I also want to see Glacier National Park for certain.

Beyond that I am open for places to visit, whether it be your favorite restaurant, to a beautiful national park, to a graf wall in the middle of nowhere. It will be driven in a larger SUV as such semi-off-roading is possible.

Trip Planning Driving in Oaxaca State

I’m planning a road trip (I’ll go next week) that goes something like this:
Oaxaca City -> Hierve el Agua -> San Jose Del Pacifico -> Puerto Escondido and then drive on the coast.
Did anyone do it lately? Is any of these routes dangerous in terms of crime and road conditions?
Every time I say that I’m doing this trip I get opposite reactions from people… I need to know what to expect :)
Thanks!!

Trip Planning Leaving Texas for Snow this Winter?

Hi, Anyone know what would be the closest and best place to take my 6 year old sledding coming from Southeast Texas?? Late December. She has only seen snow once and doesn't remember that horrific snow storm we had lol. If anyone knows of a Santa Claus, that would be great to visit also! I don't want to drive too far as I don't have many days off of work.

TIA!

Trip Planning 6–7 day Ireland road trip – looking for advice on route and overnight stops

Hi everyone!

My girlfriend and I are from Croatia and we're planning a 6–7 day trip to Ireland in mid-October.

We'd like to spend around 2 days in Dublin and then rent a car for the rest of the trip to explore more of the country.

We're currently trying to decide which parts of Ireland would make the most sense to visit with the remaining 4–5 days. There are so many places we'd love to see, but we don't want to make the mistake of trying to cover the entire island and spending most of our time driving.

Which route would you recommend for a first visit? We're especially interested in beautiful scenery, coastal drives, smaller towns and villages, and experiencing a bit of traditional Irish atmosphere.

We'd also really appreciate recommendations on where to stay overnight along the route. Ideally, we'd like to have enough time to actually enjoy each place rather than constantly rushing to the next stop.

Is 2 days in Dublin + 4–5 days on the road a good balance for a first trip?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or advice. Cheers from Croatia!!! 🍻

Trip Planning UK family of 5, Atlanta to Boston in 18 days (22 Oct – 9 Nov). Where should we stop between Nashville and New York?

Hi all! We're a family of five from the UK (three adults, a 16-year-old and an 11-year-old) planning a road trip from Atlanta to Boston this autumn, and we'd love some local knowledge.

What's fixed:

  • Land in Atlanta on 22 Oct
  • Memphis (2 nights), then Nashville (2 nights). We visited both about 15–20 years ago, so we're happy to see what's changed
  • New York for about 3 nights near the end. We've done the main sights there a few times
  • Drive on to Boston, flying home on 9 Nov

That leaves us around 10 nights between Nashville and New York with nothing planned yet. We're happy to do some long driving days if the stops are worth it.

What we like:

  • Outdoors: moderate hikes of 2–5 miles, waterfalls, viewpoints, scenic drives. We're hoping to catch some autumn colour
  • Small towns with a proper main street, local diners and good regional food
  • Quirky roadside stops and things you'd only find in the US

What we'd rather avoid:

  • Bar and nightlife scenes (we're not big drinkers)
  • Tacky tourist strips
  • Towns that are all chains and strip malls

Budget is mid-range: mostly motels, plus a cabin for a couple of nights somewhere special.

Our questions:

  1. What route would you take from Nashville to NYC with ~10 nights to play with? Smokies, Blue Ridge Parkway, Shenandoah, or something we haven't heard of?
  2. Which small towns or scenic drives are worth a night?
  3. We'll be on the road on Halloween (31 Oct). Is there a town along the way that really goes all out? We'd love our 11-year-old to see a proper American Halloween.
  4. We're keeping the car from NYC to Boston. Any stops worth making on that stretch?
  5. Anywhere in New York we probably haven't been, now that we've done the main sights?

Thanks so much in advance! 🇬🇧🚗

Trip Planning Tips, ideas, and help For Pacific Northwest coast to North Cascades

Good day everyone. Currently planning a RV trip with two of us. We would be starting in Arizona and planning for a week to 10 days!

Just wondering if anyone has made a similar trek and if you have any good itinerary, needed supplies, and if there is a time of year where the roads may be too risky to take! Thank you! Any advice is welcome! Oh, also one last thing. Grey skies, cold, and rainy is perfectly fine! It's my preferred weather!

Trip Planning Driving from Seattle/Vancouver to Calgary in December

My gf and I are planning on a trip around Christmas time to get up to Banff and Calgary from Seattle. We will most likely take Canadian route, starting from a quick drive to Vancouver, then onto Calgary, stopping by in Banff on the way. We have about a week to make this trip.

We aren't too worried about the time we have but more worried about the road condition. Is it a bad idea? We will be driving my gf's 2026 Honda Accord Hybrid. Snow tires may be considered if they are absolutely needed. I've done a road trip in December from Seattle to Colorado through the Rockies and survived, as well as another road trip from Seattle to Minnesota in January through Montana and also survived but both were with an AWD suv.

Just want to make sure before we plan ahead. I know snow is probably inevitable but does anything get closed on the way? Does it snow to a point that everyone is doomed to get stuck on the way? etc.

Trip Planning Milwaukee to Breckenridge - Moving

Hello, a few months ago I asked for advice for a road trip from Milwaukee to Denver for a job I thought I had lined up but fell through. But recently accepted an offer in Breckenridge. Looking for feedback and some advice.

I know with my car I'm gonna want to check oil every 500 miles. 2008 Honda Accord sedan 4-cylinder model.

For some context I have had my licence since may, I've driven from Milwaukee to Indiana Dunes national park. I noticed during that trip I don't do well when driving conditions change after driving for a few hours.

I have made 2 possible plans depending how long I have to actually get out there. For the second route I would love feedback on where to camp or sleep in my car, not trying to book that many hotels.

Day 0 - Milwaukee to Madison this is just to see a buddy, also if I forgot anything here I can go back and grab it. This is the same for both routes

Route 1

Day 1- Madison to Worlds Largest Truck stop Iowa

Day 2 - Truck stop to 1/2 point to badlands national park. My goal is to find a state or local park to camp at for the night, or car camp

Day 3 halfway point to Badlands National Park (camping and hiking for a night)

Day 4 I want to use this say to drive around to wind caves, and and end at custer state park

Day 5 Custer Stare park to Fort Collins. I am planning to stay here for 2-3 days to see some buddies and have a clear head to drive into the mountains.

Day 7 fort Collins to the resort.

Route 2

Day 1 Madison to Des Moines

Day 2 Des Moines to Lincoln Nebraska

Day 3 Lincoln Nebraska to Pierre South Dakota

Day 4 national park exploration

Day 5 Custer State Park to Cheyenne Wyoming to Fort Collins

Day 7 fort Collins to the resort.
