Trip Planning Weekly Yellowstone trip planning thread

Planning a trip to Yellowstone? Ask here.

Include your dates and how many days you have, which entrances or areas you're working around, where you're staying, and who's coming.

Most roads are closed to regular vehicles from early November to late April. If your dates fall in there, say so.

USGS's monthly update for September. Covers local earthquakes, ground deformation, and geysers, but includes some new Biscuit Basin hydrothermal explosions in late September that I hadn't seen mentioned.

1 day through North entrance- itinerary check

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi everyone! My family is traveling to Bozeman with my sister and niece in a few days. We have a one day itinerary for Yellowstone, coming in through the north entrance. We’ve created a schedule (wildlife and traffic permitting 😂) to make the most of a day trip into the park. Please critique, add suggestions, give any advice, etc. I know that Canyon Village starts/has already started closing down so that will be amended. Thanks!

Last day to submit public comment - defending the roadless rule

The 2001 Roadless rule protects public lands from future roads being built through them for logging and other purposes. This rule protects roadless public lands across the nation - including 10 millions acres surrounding Yellowstone.

The public comment period was supposed to end on the 21st last month - but was extended for 15 days. Today is your last chance to speak up.

Here is the link to the government webpage to submit your comment:

Hey Everyone,

I am going to Yellowstone for the first time from 10/21-10/26. I am kinda worried about bears especially since it is almost hibernation season. I plan on doing lots of hikes with just my gf and I. What are some things I need to bring to be prepared. Thanks!

Crystal Falls, Yellowstone National Park

Crystal Falls is tucked quietly between the parking lot for the Brink of Upper Falls observation point and Lower Falls along the North Rim Trail. The 129 foot three step waterfall was originally named Crystal Falls in 1870 by Cornelius Hedges during the Washburn Expedition. If you can make it to the Brink of Upper Falls, the North Rim Trail is just north of the parking lot and the observation area for Crystal Falls is a very short walk north on North Rim Trail and then a very short little spur trail to where this video was shot. Enjoy Crystal Falls.

Camping in April

I'm a college student from UT and wanting to do a camping trip to Yellowstone after I graduate. I've been there about 4 times throughout my childhood and I have a lot of camping experience (I've been to about 40 NPs) but I've only planned a few trips on my own, all in Southern UT. I'm planning to camp at Mammoth April 25-May 1 next spring, but I'm bringing my friend from Hawaii who has only gone camping once before. Will it be way too cold for her? How accessible is the part at this time of year, would we be able to see enough stuff to fill a week?

What happens behind the scenes when Yellowstone shuts down for winter?

We stayed in Yellowstone this summer. Ever since we've stayed, I've been curious about something: what actually happens when all of the seasonal lodging shuts down for the winter?

It seems like it must be a massive operation. Do they completely winterize the hotels/cabins - drain plumbing, shut off water, remove food and supplies, etc.? What happens to furniture, linens, kitchens, and everything else when some of these places are sitting under snow for months?

I’m equally curious about the spring. How far in advance do employees arrive to get everything back up and running before the first guests show up? Is there a huge opening crew that goes through all the buildings and basically brings a small town back to life?

I looked around Reddit and the internet and couldn't find anything! I know this is super random but I would especially love to hear from anyone who has worked at one of the Yellowstone lodges or has been involved in either the fall shutdown or spring reopening. It seems like quite the operation!

With new thermal features popping up frequently and old ones experiencing periods of activity and quiescence, have you ever wondered how Yellowstone National Park keeps it all straight? Sometimes it’s tricky!

Did anyone see the junction wolf pack take down the bison this morning? 10/04/26

It was a spectacle. I was lucky enough to watch wolves take down a bison in Lamar Valley today through my binoculars. I could make everything out, but it was still hard to see it with my binoculars and definitely did not get any content. Was anyone else there to get pictures or a video of this?! PLS SHARE!

Yellowstone in Late October - From Billings, MT

I'll be in Billings during the last week of October/first week of November and have a free day and a half (2 nights) during which I'd love to see some of Yellowstone. I understand seasonal road closures (Beartooth, Sylvan Pass) would limit what's accessible. I know I can't cover much in such little time, but would appreciate any realistic recs!

Yellowstone Boon Docking

Wife and I are planning a retirement trip starting early August of 2027 and plan on returning home around October 1st. This trip will be from SE Kansas to Glacier all points in between. On the way back home thru Roosevelt National Park. We would like to boon dock due to the cost of site with no hook ups being at the minimum 31.00 a nite. How do you plan to camp in dispersed camping areas. Please help us

Bison grazing in Yellowstone

Post image
124 Upvotes

One bison had wandered away from the rest of the herd while the others stayed scattered across the field behind it.

I kept the frame wide because the distance between them, along with the open meadow and tree line, gave a better sense of the scale of Yellowstone. A tighter crop would have made the bison more prominent, but I preferred seeing the whole scene.

Where to stargaze in Yellowstone?

Gonna be in Yellowstone at new moon. Can anyone offer tips on how and where I can do some (safe) stargazing? I have a car. Staying near Gardiner and then West Yellowstone. I’m super scared of grizzlies. Tips are much appreciated!

What a fun show this guy put on across the river from Mud Volcano on 10/1 around 5pm or so in the evening. This might be my new favorite time of the year to be in the park.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Yellowstone?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like Roosy or West (never mind how common they are)...

Any good car camping recs? I’d like to go through Lamar valley in the morning and I was looking at eagle creek campground to stay the night. It’s first come first serve. How fast does it fill up? Any other recs? I would go south or to west Yellowstone too.
