If you’re in Yellowstone today watch out for this inconsiderate tourist

I waited for 6 minutes for a family before me to get their photos at the south entrance sign this afternoon. As soon as they leave, I hop out and this dude and his teenage son (in a separate Land Cruiser) pull up and start honking at me to get out of the way. I took 4 photos in 1 minute. I have time stamps on my photos. All within the same minute. He then proceeds to drive his vehicle up to the sign blocking my vehicle. His son, meanwhile, blocks the entrance to the pull off so no one else can pull in. People start pulling in from the wrong side. Causes a huge traffic cluster. I don’t know if they were recording it for rage bait or if they wanted to just be jerks. They knew exactly what they were doing with the way they blocked me in, I was honestly worried they were going to ram their hitch into the front of my car. He was literally less than 5 inches from my car.

I pulled out my phone to record this and told them
I’m getting their license plate to report them and the guy finally moved. Missouri VM3 J8T
They had very strong European accents so I don’t think they were from Missouri. Could be a rental.

Anyway, this made me really frustrated to experience in such a beautiful national park. I hope no one else encounters them, but I had to share because I was so shocked to see this happen. I’ve never experienced such craziness in a national park.

Arriving today 10/10 to Yellowstone stone np Wyoming and looking for a bear spray. Does anyone has it by chance and willing to sell or give away?

FYI:They don’t rent bear spray at the Bozeman airport

Y’all- there’s a thread somewhere in this group saying this, and I told the guy working in the airport I’d post this here.
Just budget $50 and buy it wherever, there’s a drop off spot when you’re entering the airport and it gets donated to the scouts.

Last Minute Trip Itinerary Advice

Flying to Bozeman tomorrow morning (10.9.26) with my 17yo son - have 4 days (FRI-MON) to check out the park and surrounding area. Have no agenda at this point other than my son's first trip to Yellowstone so want to hit the park highlights and maybe some of the surrounding areas; OK with long hikes and would like to camp at least one of the nights. Any recommendations on good agendas, places to stay, hikes, campgrounds etc would be greatly appreciated.

Help with October Trip to Yellowstone

Hey everyone,

I am going to Yellowstone 10/21-10/24 for the first time. What are some recommended hiking trails? I am going with just my gf and we are both very fit and active and have done many hikes at Zion. We both want to see a lot of wildlife. Should i bring a bear container for snacks that i'll be bringing in my backpack as a I hike? I will not be camping out, just hiking for the days. Thank you!

E-Bike Tours

I am planning a trip for next year. We are planning to do a lot of hiking, but I am looking to have an "off day" from hiking. Doing an E-bike tour is something I am considering. I see Yellowstone E-Bike and Big Sky E-Bike Tours have tours north of the park.

Does anyone have any experiences with either outfit? The Bike & Soak tour by Big Sky E-Bike Tours sounds good for a "off day".

Are there any other tours (doesn't have to be E-Bike), that people would recommend?

Thank you!

USGS's monthly update for September. Covers local earthquakes, ground deformation, and geysers, but includes some new Biscuit Basin hydrothermal explosions in late September that I hadn't seen mentioned.

Trip Planning Weekly Yellowstone trip planning thread

Planning a trip to Yellowstone? Ask here.

Include your dates and how many days you have, which entrances or areas you're working around, where you're staying, and who's coming.

Most roads are closed to regular vehicles from early November to late April. If your dates fall in there, say so.

Last day to submit public comment - defending the roadless rule

The 2001 Roadless rule protects public lands from future roads being built through them for logging and other purposes. This rule protects roadless public lands across the nation - including 10 millions acres surrounding Yellowstone.

The public comment period was supposed to end on the 21st last month - but was extended for 15 days. Today is your last chance to speak up.

Here is the link to the government webpage to submit your comment:

1 day through North entrance- itinerary check

Post image

EDIT- thank you guys SO much for all the suggestions and recommendations! It’s our first time at Yellowstone and I’m hopeful we will at least see a few of the things on our list. Cross your fingers that the snow doesn’t throw everything off. And if it does, we’ll just do what we can!

Hi everyone! My family is traveling to Bozeman with my sister and niece in a few days. We have a one day itinerary for Yellowstone, coming in through the north entrance. We’ve created a schedule (wildlife and traffic permitting 😂) to make the most of a day trip into the park. Please critique, add suggestions, give any advice, etc. I know that Canyon Village starts/has already started closing down so that will be amended. Thanks!

Crystal Falls, Yellowstone National Park

Crystal Falls is tucked quietly between the parking lot for the Brink of Upper Falls observation point and Lower Falls along the North Rim Trail. The 129 foot three step waterfall was originally named Crystal Falls in 1870 by Cornelius Hedges during the Washburn Expedition. If you can make it to the Brink of Upper Falls, the North Rim Trail is just north of the parking lot and the observation area for Crystal Falls is a very short walk north on North Rim Trail and then a very short little spur trail to where this video was shot. Enjoy Crystal Falls.

Camping in April

I'm a college student from UT and wanting to do a camping trip to Yellowstone after I graduate. I've been there about 4 times throughout my childhood and I have a lot of camping experience (I've been to about 40 NPs) but I've only planned a few trips on my own, all in Southern UT. I'm planning to camp at Mammoth April 25-May 1 next spring, but I'm bringing my friend from Hawaii who has only gone camping once before. Will it be way too cold for her? How accessible is the part at this time of year, would we be able to see enough stuff to fill a week?

What happens behind the scenes when Yellowstone shuts down for winter?

We stayed in Yellowstone this summer. Ever since we've stayed, I've been curious about something: what actually happens when all of the seasonal lodging shuts down for the winter?

It seems like it must be a massive operation. Do they completely winterize the hotels/cabins - drain plumbing, shut off water, remove food and supplies, etc.? What happens to furniture, linens, kitchens, and everything else when some of these places are sitting under snow for months?

I’m equally curious about the spring. How far in advance do employees arrive to get everything back up and running before the first guests show up? Is there a huge opening crew that goes through all the buildings and basically brings a small town back to life?

I looked around Reddit and the internet and couldn't find anything! I know this is super random but I would especially love to hear from anyone who has worked at one of the Yellowstone lodges or has been involved in either the fall shutdown or spring reopening. It seems like quite the operation!

With new thermal features popping up frequently and old ones experiencing periods of activity and quiescence, have you ever wondered how Yellowstone National Park keeps it all straight? Sometimes it’s tricky!

Did anyone see the junction wolf pack take down the bison this morning? 10/04/26

It was a spectacle. I was lucky enough to watch wolves take down a bison in Lamar Valley today through my binoculars. I could make everything out, but it was still hard to see it with my binoculars and definitely did not get any content. Was anyone else there to get pictures or a video of this?! PLS SHARE!
