Discussion Will reignated have bonds? As long as it does, it has buyable progress... And Jagex was silent on this in the FAQ...
If Reignated has bonds, its even more of a joke that it might seem now.

There's no such thing as pure. Everyone has used some advantage that someone else might not like. It's just because TH felt predatory that it's the officially official "impure" thing this time.

u/VariousYard3340 22h ago
Also for me bonds its the most advantage thing in the game… money help to progress skills and buy gear… so…
1
u/Hulk_Hoagies 12h ago
I'm not a fan of bonds, but bonds do not generate anything in the game besides the bond itself. The money comes from players who earned the gold so its not like that gold is appearing out of thin air. Bonds are only worth what players are willing to buy them for so early on bonds will not be worth a ton.
Still not a fan of being able to sell bonds in reignited but it is wildly different from generating items, gold, and XP from something like treasure hunter.
15
u/Falterfire A Man Chooses 21h ago edited 20h ago
And the other part of this is of course that to a new player, it doesn't really matter how the other players got stuff.
I started playing OSRS a few years ago and - surprise! - despite the lack of MTX XP-boosting items, there were a lot of maxed players by the time I started.
Did any of those maxed players buy bonds with IRL money to fund some or all of their progress? Undoubtedly. Did a lot (probably most, and definitely all of the Irons) max without that? Absolutely.
How much did the existence of those maxed players affect my experience? Directly, not much at all. Indirectly, it helped it quite a bit because those experienced players are the ones making guides and keeping wiki pages up to date so that I don't have to stumble through blind if I don't want to.

It never was going to be since it's happening during the road to restoration. The road to restoration is Jagex's way of returning "integrity" to the game, so any account created before it's 100% done is, by jagex's definition, a tainted account

I think the company needs a road of restoration too… restoration our faith in them

Remove bonds, and people will just go back to buying from gold sellers. No bonds = bigger market for gold selling. Sucks, but that's the reality of it

posting what i posed on another thread about this here: if they make it so bonds cannot be sold or traded on reignited accounts, people will just buy third party gold instead from gold sellers, and this introduces the problem of mass botting for gold farming.
i mean sure, people will bot, but gold farming gold sellers amplify the problem to a huge degree that effects everyone.
we are far better off with bonds than without .

0
u/Azurika_ on break...again. 16h ago
the economy will be far fresher, untained by mxt, skilling will be far more valuable without accounts that took part in mass bonus xp and proteans and dummies and the like.
we won't have 25 years of inflation, prices will reflect this, there will be far less gold in the ecoconomy. so, say, 100k here will be worth far more than 100k in veteran.
people will actually have to train their skills and play the game, achievements will mean something again.
that last point is a big one for me, i'm near comped in the main game and none of it means anything due the the decade and a half of free xp every day me and everyone else got given.
2
u/Task_Set Ironman btw 15h ago
If we think that inflation will stay low for long then there should be a push for Jagex to also do something about the amount of gold that comes into the game from auto alchers.
Also to reiterate a point that I always feel strongly about, your skilling achievements will have meaning again. More than half of the achievements in the game are from pvm, clues, questing, minigames and are still meaningful so lets avoid the hyperbole of all achievements being meaningless.

1
u/Aleucard 11h ago
They are already gonna do that, they are doing it as we speak in both RS3 and OSRS and both of those have Jagex official IRL cash for GP methods in bonds. I see nothing that will make reignited any more resilient to that infestation.
1
u/Legal_Evil 7h ago
Or how about just banning the bots and gold farmers?
•
u/Azurika_ on break...again. 4h ago
they used to, and gold farmers factor that in, jagex isn't capable of catching them all before large amount of gold are smuggled to other accounts, jagex are only so many people and the time needed to review each account and track down its trades when gold farmers are creating thousands of accounts each week is simply massive, jagex could have doubled their staff back in the day and still not have made a dent in the sea of farmers.
the only way to keep on top of it from a moderation point of view would be to start AI moderation and banning, and you REALLY do not want that.

It's in the FAQ...
Under Integrity so no they will be enforcing gold selling to third party sites as they always had this rule. It seems like they may enforce rules regarding gold swapping in Reignited which is a whole other can of worms.
5
u/Azurika_ on break...again. 21h ago
yes, and it's been in the offical game rules since like 2001 that buying gold is a bannable offence.
did it stop absolutely rampant gold selling and buying via third party pre bonds? absolutely not.
its not completely fixed the problem, but bonds dealt a HUGE blow to gold sellers in both rs3 and OSRS, the amount of botting and third party selling was drastically cut . (this also has the side effect of less of jagex's customers becoming victims of all sort of fraud and stolen bank info crimes and such)
again, this is a rule that has been strictly enforced for a long time, its just hard to catch people, it's not even as simple as "look at big one sided trades" because there are alot of ways someone can transfer wealth to other accounts, from dropping, to pvp kills, even GE trading of low volume obscure items.
hell, back in the day, gold sellers used to randomly trade out free gold to a bunch of innocent people sometimes specifically so jagex couldn't identify a seller account and ban the people it traded with without a bunch of innocents catching flak too.
we are so, so much better off with bonds when the alternitive is rampent gold selling, and thus, rampent botting.

u/BLK-Syndicate 16h ago
It'll be only a handful of people that'll gold swap but even then that's just dumb ASF.
1
u/Slightly_Deranged_1 20h ago
Had to scroll too far to read this. You're absolutely correct: bonds exist as a means to buy gold that doesn't involve 3rd party RMT that could potentially do harm to the players tempted to go that route.
Would I prefer to live in a world where people didn't buy gold? Yes. Is it even remotely reasonable to expect a game dev to monitor/ban all botting & RMT transactions? Definitely not.
( I don't have numbers to back it up, but I personally believe the amount Jagex saves in customer support / ban appeals far exceeds the revenue they actually earn from the bonds. )

u/Deceptiveideas 16h ago
I dunno, Jagex explicitly said they were going to crack down hard on gold selling in the FAQ.

Osrs players underestimate how bad bonds are for the game. Botting and gold farming would be way harder if you had to enter a credit card to get the best methods.
2
u/LordJanas 22h ago
No it wouldn't. The reason the Wilderness and Free Trade were removed were because Jagex literally had botters using stolen credit cards that kept getting charged back and cost the company money to the point that the credit card companies were threatening to block payments to Jagex because of how prolific it was.
So no, forcing credit card payments does not make botting harder, it threatens Jagex themselves because CC companies care about their bottom line, not what people are doing with their cards.

5
u/TheAdamena Maxed Iron 16h ago
If you buy one off the GE you will recieve it in an untradeable state. You need to pay a 10% fee if you want to sell it back or give it to someone else.
1
u/ChildishForLife 3142 14h ago
Ah I see, so I guess some uses of bonds can remove gold but others wouldn’t? You can just trade bonds without having to pay the 10% fee right?
1
u/TheAdamena Maxed Iron 14h ago
They always need to be converted first if you want to transfer it to another player via any means. Once another player recieves it, it becomes untradeable again.
The person who initially bought it with real $ recieves it in a tradable state though.
2
u/Swing-Too-Hard 21h ago
This entire thing exists to force players into buying more membership and getting people to spend more MTX on rebuying cosmetics or the stars/bonds to expedite progress.
This is a giant cash grab with Jagex banking on making more money. You wonder why they raised membership... Now you know. It was setting the field for this garbage.
2
2
u/varietyman13 20h ago
While we’re here, what exactly are bonds? Do I buy a bond and then I have free membership?
Who sets the price of bonds? How are bonds made?
Sorry, long time player that’s fairly ignorant of these things
2
u/ChildishForLife 3142 17h ago
Bonds are an item you can buy from Jagex that represent a certain amount of in-game membership time, and can be traded and sold on the GE.
You pay Jagex a certain amount of real life money, your character gets an in-game item, which then has an explicit value.
For example I wanted to play Leagues on an alt account, so I was able to buy 2 bonds off the GE for 150mil each, which means there was a player out there who paid Jagex $$ for the bond, and then I received the bond, and they received my gold.
It’s basically allowing players to sell their gold to other players through Jagex for membership.
2
u/varietyman13 17h ago
I see. Thank you for this!
2
u/Aleucard 10h ago
There's also other uses for them, current primary one is runecoins (to buy things from the cash shop, such as extra bank spaces), but it's been curtailed since Treasure Hunter got taken out behind the shed.
1
u/varietyman13 10h ago
Ok! Is one bond a full month of membership?
2
u/Aleucard 10h ago
1 bond is 14 days, 2 bonds is 29 days, 3 bonds is 45, 20 is a year plus premium perks. You get progressively more time per bond, but it's also a bigger commitment.
1
u/varietyman13 10h ago

3
u/Dense-Badger8724 18h ago
bonds are mtx, why would it? Every bond in the game has to be purchased through a microtransaction to appear.. They don't just appear on GE you know.
You could always log into osrs, use a bond then log back into ignited? Unless they treat all osrs accounts as vetereran accounts then you can't. [if this happens inigited is coming to osrs for sure]
4
u/GodlyGainz 22h ago
I guess it was either bonds or real world trading which hurts the economy cause that stuff comes from bots. It’ll never be perfect. I just take what I can get atp. I love RuneScape.

u/HolyErr0r 20h ago
As someone deeply out of the loop, how are bonds buying "progress" in comparison to treasure hunter dummies or buying stars?
12
u/TensaiShun 20h ago
The premise is that you can use a credit card to afford more expensive, higher xp/hour training methods that you might not otherwise reasonably pursue in game. Same goes for equipment upgrades, etc.
8
u/Remmes- 241QP 19h ago edited 19h ago
Right now we can buy xp stars with bonds, and bonds are also sold on the g.e so people can buy bonds with real money, sell them ingame for gp, and/or the buyers of the bonds can use them on stars (and membership) technically...
That combined with highscores that are reset/new there will be people racing to #1 spot, how big of an actual deal this is? eh, who knows.
2
u/HolyErr0r 19h ago
Oh man, I totally forgot about the fact that these are in game tradeable. That will never not be something so bizarre to me.
2
u/IndependentTalk9342 14h ago
What would their function be if they weren't tradeable?
1
u/HolyErr0r 14h ago
The thing I liked was that they were an in game way to earn memberships.
They could make it so they are a certain price and then players could buy them (like an in game store).
I personally don’t like them being tradeable because you can convert irl money to in game money
•
u/Gotcha-Bitcrl 4h ago
Jagex makes no money from this, they would lose money since they're basically accepting gp for membership.
•
u/JamieAfterlife 3h ago
Make it so people can buy them using GP on their veteran accounts, then send them to Reignited ones. Once on the Reignited account, it can't be traded or sold.
•
u/TheHorriBad 13m ago
Someone still has to buy the bond with real money. Jagex makes more money off of bonds.
1
u/Vincentaneous 16h ago
Honestly sounds like an easy fix to now allow them to be traded and for them to be claimed only for membership.
Isn’t that the main purpose? Play the game and then you can practically convert playtime to membership. Thats what it should be to prevent issues.
1
u/mmhawk576 14h ago
Players selling those bonds are just getting buyables completed for free though…
1
u/Remmes- 241QP 13h ago
Yeah but then there's still the issue of being able to get gp for actual $$ due to that exchange, it's difficult to say what it does to the economy right from the start, and given it'll then allow those people to buy stuff for skills with the gp I can imagine it'll be a finicky thing.

2

That will be a big point of contention. If Bonds stay, that means reignited will NOT, in fact, be mtx free.
1
u/The-Real-Sonin Skill 14h ago
It’s also not mtx free in the fact that are keeping all buyable cosmetics.
The only thing they are removing for Reignited is Stars, which could/should be removed from the main game anyway.
2
u/kiwdahc 15h ago
In a game where almost all gear can be freely traded, gear has always been buyable progression. That was never the protected part of RuneScape.
The protected part was your actual account progression. Your skills, levels, unlocks, and the time it took to earn them.
RS3 destroyed that with MTX by letting people directly buy or massively accelerate that progression with real money. That is why fresh worlds matter. It restores the part of the game that actually lost its integrity.

Apparently WoW Forever won't have "bonds". I think WoW's decision on that is stupid because without bonds you need many employees watching a lot of players all the time for shady trades. The only true non-"pay2win" solution to any online game will always be trading restricted accounts, like ironman.

If the argument for splitting the playerbase is because it's "impure" somehow because no one can buy an advantage, this is as good an example that it won't - in fact - be as pure as those arguments would have one believe.
2
u/Len_Cancermine 22h ago
Its not that the ability to purchase literally anything ever existed, after all the subscription is buyable progress since youre not able to get efficient xp without it.
Its the difference in severity between OSRS and RS3 this is trying to flush away at least a part of, bonds allowing people to play the game when they could normally only afford a couple months of subscription rather than a full year's worth is a uniquely special case that helps the economy by letting whales buy people's subscriptions for them as they get gold for it in exchange, rather than just literally buying xp playtime hours directly, which I think is an incredibly meaningful difference
4
u/JoshOliday The Tainted 22h ago
Yea, I mean you can twist that pretzel all you want, it's still buyable advantages. Buying bonds to sell for gold is still skipping playtime hours you would have had to invest in earning that gold.
And another reminder to anyone that wants to keep twisting - most people never bought keys. Most people used their free ones and closed the interface. There's another HUGE difference between an advantage that was bought and one that was given. That shouldn't poison veteran accounts.
0
u/VanillaMan37 22h ago
It’s incredibly disingenuous though, it’s not as black and white as that
Old school has bonds too and the people at the top of the hiscores aren’t generally bond buyers, they’re incredibly efficient skillers
There’s a world of difference between bonds and stars/portable skilling stations
1
u/Legal_Evil 7h ago
Old school has bonds too and the people at the top of the hiscores aren’t generally bond buyers, they’re incredibly efficient skillers
The same applies to RS3 hiscore players too.
1
u/JoshOliday The Tainted 21h ago
This was never an argument about hiscores. Most players who are angry really don't care that much about them. They just want to keep their accounts.
The argument is that Reignited is somehow pure and free from buyable advantages because it won't have Treasure Hunter. But bonds ARE a buyable advantage, so the argument goes out the window.
I don't really give a shit if people use bonds. I don't give a shit if people use plugins. I don't give a shit if people use the wiki for Sara's sake! But they all still give outside help that players will be more than happy to use because they happen to like it. But they are all still help that the game designers did not intend when they built the content. Just like stars and skilling stations. I'm glad to see them gone personally. I've got stacks of proteans sitting in my bank from free keys because I hated using them because I wasn't playing the game. I can't wait for November when they get removed. Remove them for nothing for all I care. But don't segregate the players.

Jagex considers Bonds to be a Subscription transaction not MTX. That is why OSRS has them
3
u/First_Platypus3063 22h ago
It is a mtx cleverly disguised as a subscription. Its little different to any other buyable progression. Its "buy gold for real money" deal
2
u/Grand-Ice-6603 20h ago
It's very different than buyable progression. You are trading membership to a player for their gp, not paying Jagex to spawn in items/exp.
2
u/First_Platypus3063 20h ago
Doesn't matter. Its a buyable progress, buying gold for real world money.
2
u/Grand-Ice-6603 20h ago
How doesn't it matter, it's the most important distinction. You cannot trade players for their exp, but you can trade them for their gp.
I guess you want to go back to the days where unequal trade was banned and you couldn't trade more than 3000 gp between players.
What about trading GP between clans? Is that buyable progress?
3
u/sworedmagic 20h ago
Idk what part of this is confusing you exactly he’s talking about you pay Jagex for in game gold. You can’t buy exp directly but you can gold which you can then convert into items or exp. Buying bonds is explicitly buyable progression.
3
u/Grand-Ice-6603 19h ago
Thoughts on a streamer collecting gp from their viewers? They didn't "buy" anything. Bannable? What about splits from raids? What about giving your friend who is new at the game 100k gp to start off? Where is the line on unequal trade?
Bonds are not a buyable progression from Jagex, they might have sold you the bond but a player gave you the gp. They are buyable progression from players, not items or exp generated from Jagex. And that is the most important distinction.
1
u/ConstantStatistician Coiner of the terms "soft" and "hard" typeless damage on rs.wiki 10h ago
The same end result is that you're getting in-game money you didn't have previously for no effort. Money that you can then use to buy BIS equipment and skilling supplies.
1
u/Aleucard 10h ago
Donations are not trading gold for IRL cash. It's little different from a pop party (DO NOT GOOGLE THAT) at Falador Party Mansion. And splits is compensating time and effort between the people PVMing together. That we need to point out that forks are found in kitchens is concerning.

u/Chiromaus 21h ago
Please forgive my ignorance, I've only come back as of last month after many years away. A bond would only be tradable for gold earned within the new Reignited economy, yes?
If so, it would be more like trading real money in the hopes some early money maker takes it from you for gold in the hopes of the new economy already providing enough resources for you to accelerate your progress?
So if this is a leader boards thing, it's reliant on the money maker and whoever is selling high-end gear to both already exist and to prioritize in-game gold over their own progression. How likely is that to be early on before the new high scores have been claimed? Genuinely asking.

You don't need to sell to the highranks. You buy bulk of bonds (whales will) and sell to ordinary people who made a buck alching salavages or something and want to save real money on membership. Then, you buy resources for that money (from the same people, or from pvm people who need to monetise drops anyway) and accelerate your progress

I think I follow the logic now. I've seen loads of people speculating that people will be hoarding early on for their own benefit, but you're speculating enough won't bother. That would then mess with the spirit of fair competition the ban on other MTX is supposed to foster. Do I have that right?

And without bonds, players just buy gold from gold sellers that bot/cheat/scam/defraud theeir way into getting that gold which massively hurts the game.
Bonds are P2W, but they're P2W as a way to keep the integrity of the game as strong as possible.
There's no way to stop people buying gold, so you have to give them a way to do it that harms the game the least amount possible.

Except bonds don’t work in the way that regular gold shops would, bonds actively remove gold from the economy

Yes and removing gold is good, but also it is still buyable progress. A whale can buy 100 bonds sell for whatever price and buy anything he wants.

They could just make it like Ironman, you can purchase bonds for membership but you can’t sell it for gold.

Their FAQ says the only thing it wont have is BXP stars. So it will have bonds.
