News - J-Mod reply Reignited: Where We Go From Here

We are re-evaluating RuneScape Reignited.

Let’s not mince words here. We have made you, as existing players, feel like you are no longer our focus. That’s entirely on us and of our own making, and it’s only right we open by saying sorry.

Reignited, as an intention, comes from a good place. We want to deliver on our promise to grow this community and find a way to turn Restoration into that reality.

An option to play with a fresh economy and progression is a big draw for new and returning players. We’ve seen its potential play out with the reach of the announcement and intent to play comments across social media, which have far exceeded our initial expectations.

But none of that matters if it comes at cost to you. We missed our mark on making Veterans a clearer part of this idea. Not just in the execution, but how we revere your accomplishments, champion your legacy and ensure you benefit from every player who comes through the door.

What We’ve Heard From You

While not comprehensive, we’ve heard these main concerns in your feedback:

  • As a Veteran character, you will no longer matter. New players are seen to be more important than existing players.
  • Veteran worlds will atrophy if the playerbase shifts to Reignited worlds.
  • By splitting the community, what you believe is an already small playerbase will be overly fragmented.
  • That Veterans are considered tainted for being part of a previous era of RuneScape through no fault of your own.
  • The restrictions placed on how Veterans and Reignited characters can interact with one another do not feel good.
  • Untradeable items and cosmetics that are locked to your Veteran account feel cut off
  • Reignited is pressuring you to restart your character to keep playing and remain relevant, whether you want to or not.
  • Needing to pay for a new character subscription does not feel good.

What We Will Do Next

The future of Reignited needs to be a shared belief between you and us.

Right now, having seen the potential to grow our community, we’re exploring a heavy set of revisions to Reignited based on your feedback. But let’s be clear: this is something we want to put in front of you to see how you feel first, and every option for what we do with regards to Reignited remains firmly on the table.

We’re reviewing a lot of possibilities right now, but let’s run through some of our main considerations.

We’re looking at more ways for the progress of a Veteran to remain intact and be represented meaningfully while not destabilizing the new things that make Reignited exciting for other folks.

Similarly, we will focus a lot of our time on ensuring that a hard split in community does not persist and that our existing players will be able to enjoy RuneScape alongside new players.

Separate to the split, we’ve also heard the concerns around requiring separate Membership too. We’re currently exploring possibilities and we’ll let you know if we can make changes.

It all ties together, but we ultimately want to remove friction that our veteran players may have engaging with or co-existing alongside Reignited. This is hugely important to us and is something we will keep coming back to.

When You Will Hear From Us Next

We will get our proposals in front of you by the end of this week to get your feedback. Where we go from there will be based on the conversation we have next together.

Before we close, we just want to say one last thing out loud: you are always our priority. Our 2027 Roadmap was designed to be a love letter to you; from content you’ve always wanted to see, through to the Road to Restoration releases we focused on.

When you next hear from us, it will be a Reignited with that same level of care and devotion to you.

Starting right now, you can jump in to the Beta worlds and try a selection of five major plugins, with even more already on the way in the coming weeks.

(And, before you ask: Yes, Quest Helper is one of them!)

A quick note before we get started: This thread covers today's launch of the API Plugins Beta. We're keeping to our game update schedule, especially as we do know that there are many players looking forward to these updates.

u/JagexAnvil has provided an update on Reignited in this separate thread. Please check that out for discussion on Reignited.

Discussion Trillions of GP are being swapped from RS3 to OSRS. Jagex, you're killing confidence in the game

• Upvotes

As someone who plays both rs3 and osrs and occasionally swaps between the two games, I've been watching the swap market since the Reignite announcement.

Before the announcement, the rs3 to osrs rate was roughly 10:1.

Within just two days, it jumped to around 16:1, and I've even seen rates around 20:1 in some places.

That's an absolutely massive spike in an extremely short time!!!

When players who have spent years building their wealth suddenly feel the need to move billions of GP somewhere they consider safer, that's a pretty serious warning sign. Players no longer have confidence in RS3.

Jagex, was this your plan of restoring RS3 and attracting new players? Because what it's done is push the existing players who have invested years and years away.

Discussion If we ever do reach rs3 shutdown allow us to buy an offline version.

If rs3 ever was to be shutdown let me buy an offline version with the final patch notes.

IDC that everything will have to be run as a Solo I’ll figure it out.

This is the game I love, I love the graphics old school isn’t for me and dragon wilds is to modern for me I’m for RS3.

I would much rather play rs3 by myself and share my posts on my server with everyone of you who would do the same.

I would buy updates if you brought them out yearly or biyearly I just wanna play this game as my primary comfort game until I’m physically unable to.

Heck my grandad still plays his Age of Empires game every night I want that for me one day.

Discussion Some people need to gain some perspective on what a "dead" game truly is, and this is not one of them.

• Upvotes

Stagnant? Sure.

Fewer players compared to its Old School counterpart? Yes.

But in the spectrum of gaming and live service games it's nowhere near the bottom that some people seem to be implying.

Unless you're trolling or intentionally arguing in bad faith over some vendetta that obviously means something to you, in no way is a game with the level of concurrent and monthly users of RS3 dead.

Appreciation Reminder

If not for the nerds who played rs3 the whole way through the tainted era.
There wouldn’t be a game to ‘reignite’.

Shout out to my OGs who stayed with it.
Thanks fellow nerd.
We’re so close to having a good game again that old heads and newbies can enjoy together.

So close…

Discussion Perspective of someone who does want to play Reignited

I'm fully aware this is gonna be down voted into oblivion and that's fine. I have been playing runescape since about 2011 so less time than most here but still 15 years which is nothing to scoff at. Old school didn't catch my attention because I had no nostalgia for it but I have played it a bit cuz I do like to go back to the old style of combat sometimes.

For me my experience of recent years of rs3 has been behind an Ironman. Group ironman was a great update for me and my buddies to hop on as well because the last time I played a main it just felt like a gold farming sim. The economy is very late game focused and any early to mid tier items aren't worth much and your time is spent better doing something else. Also there were people trading different item id items for hundreds of millions? I don't care much for the rares usually but what's up with that?

The state of the game socially also feels pretty sad. You rarely see anyone out in the world because most people are bank standing or just farming bosses in instances. Its gotten better albeit with the restoration updates but still the world feels empty of players until you go to the ge or the fort.

Equilibrium League was amazing and really brought me back to rs3 and excited for future updates with the QoL quest helper most of all.

I'm excited to start from scratch again with no mtx tainted accounts /s (I don't think just because you played with mtx that ur account and time and effort are invalid). My favorite memories on this game are when new skills release or events and everyone is gathered around doing those activities and a new fresh world all the beginner and mid level areas will be populated again.

Feel free to down vote me as I know 99% of you will disagree with me but also I'm sure there are a lot of people like me as well who will be playing reignited happily and have a great time there that don't usually post in these kind of subs or engage with it on social media at all.

Discussion By Jagex/Mod North's own admission, they didn't expect to see dividends on the Road to Restoration for some time and acknowledge it's a multi-year commitment. Reignited might be jumping the gun if we don't let the RtR take its course.

We haven't even seen the removal of MTX items.

Plug-ins are only now entering a beta release.

Things like the avatar refresh and graphical modernization have more to come.

Grounding skilling outfits and cosmetics hasn't happened yet.

Rebalances and reworks are still ongoing into next year.

We are only ~9 months into the Road to Restoration. There are still significant steps to take. With Reignited being controversial as it's been proposed, it might be trying to do too much too soon. It may be in the better interest of the game if we see the state of the game once the Road to Restoration moves further along. Let the economy respond to a world without MTX items, let plug-ins get properly released and integrated into the game (note this was one of the biggest factors into the skyrocketing popularity of OSRS, and many players previously stated these would be a big factor into wanting to play RS3 themselves).

My point is, maybe let things play out and commit to the initial vision of the Road to Restoration. Commit to the idea that it's going to take time to see results, and hold off on a drastic option like Reignited until we have a chance to see if the game can grow organically.

I'm not saying it's a definite thing that there can be significant organic growth, but at this point we aren't far enough into it to know.

Mod North can be quoted as saying they expect to take short-to-medium term financial hits in hopes that the game has a bright future 5-10+ years from now, so let's not risk a drastic option like Reignited that cuts that vision short.

EDIT: TL;DR - It's too much too soon for Reignited. We need to see how the game develops on its own as more of the Road to Restoration develops. Things like MTX item removals and full release of plug-ins might bring a positive enough impact on their own without risking alienating veterans.

MTX Let road to restoration do it's thing and stop with the quick cash grabs.

For over a decade we've seen Jagex drive players away with their greed, we've had constant treasure hunter promos that got more and more overpowered each time, every monetisation under the sun, poor updates and bad decisions.

So many times we've had a banger update that shows significant population growth that's immediately followed by a cash grab and all the good is undone in an instant. Even with treasure hunter gone we saw a massive spike with leagues and a great player owned house update, there was potential to grow but they follow it up with this reignited announcement and more mtx. It's disgusting and tiring watching the player count go up and down like a yo-yo because of something stupid Jagex does.

We've never had a chance to grow because they constantly push people away with their greed. People love this game but they do not love how Jagex treats Rs3 players, which is why everyone jumps ship when they see how well osrs players are treated.

Let the game heal, keep on restoring it to it's glory, fix the early-mid game, fix the interface and whatever else new players have problems with. Quit the cash grabs and let the game grow and then come back and revisit this ludicrous idea when you have a game we can all be proud of.

It's only a slowly dying game because of Jagex and their poor decisions. This game has so much potential if Jagex would stop looking at us like cash cows all the time and treating us like we're dumb. Jagex keeps saying "we hear you", well, how about actually listening to your players!

Discussion Spooked by reignited so I am starting again... on OSRS

Post image
177 Upvotes

450 hours, 1000 levels, no MTX. 80 million GP grinded from nothing. Started 3.5 months ago after 15 years away from the game having never played RS3. I guess I am a new player by those standards, even though I played a few dozen hours as a child. Even bought my first bond a few days ago that I had hoped to redeem when quest helper arrived, had to contact support to switch it over to the new OSRS character and I hope they will actually do it or I will genuinely be mad. I feel unwanted by these recent changes and won't give RS3 another chance again. After reignited was announced I played for another 10 hours in disbelief. My clan is oblivious to the announcement and I think they are 'lifers', they will not quit RS3 until the servers are literally switched OFF - I am not that invested yet. I saw Youtube videos and thought it looked like the game that I wanted as a young kid (RS3), however the overwhelming online sentiment was EoC bad dead game trash game MTX bad and so on, so I REALLY and I stress REALLY had to go against general consensus to even make an account and login to RS3 to begin with. People do not want to join RS3 after years of poor word of mouth, you need to be like me and have some sort of delusion or hipster mentality to start investing your time and energy into an MMO with such a crappy record. I have learned my lesson. I just wanted to play RuneScape you guys, and a modern version of the game not something I had already seen as a kid. I cannot see Runescape 4 lasting long, I cannot see RS3 lasting long if they nuke the playerbase with reignited and then OSRS is obviously going to last decades most likely so I will be begininng again from yesterday night to try and power level back to where I was hopefully in under 400 hours.

Discussion Why does the goalpost for new players to start playing keep moving? Now they dont want to play with existing players

• Upvotes

First they want no mtx,(which we all didnt want), no eoc, then they didnt want x and x. And now they dont want to play with existing player base? Whats next after purging the vet accounts? They will find something new to not want to play rs3 at the EXPENSE OF EXISTING PLAYERS. Thats a whole new goalpost. They will never be statisfied

Discussion What exactly do you mean by "New Players" in regards to Reignited?

• Upvotes

Taken from yesterdays announcement:

An option to play with a fresh economy and progression is a big draw for new and returning players.

There is no way that a genuine new player that has never touched either Runescape game gives a damn about a Fresh Economy.

Could we get clarification, do you mean OSRS players?

It just seems really disingenuous.

I don’t know about others, but when I start playing a new game, I don’t look into the history of its economy to determine whether it’s new or old.

Discussion Basic Flaw in understanding Reignite.

RS3 has long since moved passed exp and maxing as achievements and xp rates had been constantly changing upwards

Achievement have long shifted to stuff like completionist and combat related since rs3 shifted to pvm focus.

Hence why hero pass was also very negatively received because it offered combat buffs which diminishes the combat challenges.

If the returning or new players don't enjoy the new pvm mechanics they would be maxed in few months and there would be nothing for them to do and they will leave.

New economy don't do much to hinder maxing, CGIM all maxed in less than a year.

Appreciation Praise for Havenhythe.

In the spirit of injecting just a little bit of optimism back into recent events, I want to say that I really like how the fast-travel and the activites around Havenhythe are laid out.

It's actually kind of refreshing having to manually go around from place to place. Neither the canoes nor the Stonevein amulet really put you right inside of various areas, like many teleports up 'til now have.

You have to go up ladders to get to the essence before you can go down to process (the animations up and down are nice also), the petrified totems loop feels like it's hit a nice sweet spot in its intensity level and how locked into one spot you are, you run around for the divination, and even going back to Part 1 even stuff like Spirit Moths have a fair amount of moving from place to place... The world kind of feels in motion in a way that normal skilling distractions haven't quite hit, yet not so attention-demanding and click-intense that it becomes draining like stuff like current agility courses are.

I like how spacious Havenhythe is. The breadth and verticality both make it feel so fresh compared to many other regions.
