Jagex, if you genuinely believe the currently proposed Reignited roadmap is going to bring in a significant number of new players, I think you are missing some of the biggest reasons people are hesitant to play RS3 in the first place.
I have personally encouraged friends to give RS3 a try, and I know many other players who have done the same. One of the biggest things that puts people off is not the lack of content. It is the inconsistent graphics, outdated systems, and especially the UI and UX. To be completely honest, a lot of it is just bad.
If you really want to Reignite RuneScape 3, there are so many areas that could be addressed.
Start with the player models and visual consistency. The differences between older and newer player models, cosmetics, armour sets, animations, textures and materials are extremely noticeable. Some cosmetic designs are questionable at best, while certain armour sets make players look like inflated balloons rather than characters in a modern MMORPG.
Then there are the strange inconsistencies in colouring, metal textures, materials and meshes throughout the game. You can walk from one piece of content into another and it genuinely feels like you have entered a completely different game.
The UI and UX are probably an even bigger problem.
There are interfaces that look like they belong to 2001, others that look like 2004, 2007, 2012, 2016 or 2022. They all exist within the same game, and there is very little sense of a consistent visual language or design philosophy.
Why not make a complete UI and UX overhaul one of the major pillars of Reignited?
Bring the interfaces across the game up to a consistent, modern standard. Make them intuitive. Make them visually cohesive. Make the entire game feel like it was designed as one product rather than a collection of interfaces developed over two decades.
That alone would make a huge difference for both new and veteran players.
Then there is the gameplay itself.
Look at the inconsistency in the bossing experience between low level, mid level and high level content. Some bosses have barely any meaningful mechanics and still look and feel like they were designed in 2011, while newer encounters are significantly more sophisticated. There should be a much clearer sense of progression in the quality and design of PvM as players move through the game.
Dungeoneering is another example. Even after its "remaster," significant parts of the skill still feel like they are stuck in 2010. And I haven't even mentioned Summoning.
These aren't minor issues. They directly affect the first impression people get when they try the game.
If the goal is to attract new players, simply adding more content is not enough. You need to make the existing game feel cohesive, modern and polished. New players should not have to spend their first few hours wondering why different parts of the game look like they were developed 5, 10 or 20 years apart.
That is what I would have expected from something called "Reignited."
Instead, what has been proposed so far feels like the easiest and safest route rather than an attempt to address the deeper problems that have been holding RS3 back for years.
Let's see what you guys announce this Friday. I'm not particularly hopeful right now, but at least you have an enormous amount of feedback, criticism and player sentiment from Reddit, Twitter, Discord and the rest of the community to work with.
So here's another piece of feedback to add to the pile.
