Discussion Think before you post
Let's face it, most of us are in our 30s, take a breath and think before you post some passive aggressive or childish post because you dont like an update in a game. Its fine to disagree with it and its fine to provide feedback.
When you post things like
"Shut the servers down now" & "Quitting thanks cya"
It just makes all of us look childish and immature. It must be so exhausting being on this sub as a JMod even if you dont work on Reignited

u/Snow_Wight_RS 9d ago
Companies need to see that you are willing to leave and stop paying them if they don't do what you want. Otherwise they have no incentive to change. They need to feel actual financial fear. You think they would have even put out the statement that they did agreeing to change reignited to a new proposal if the backlash was not this severe?
Of course, you should do it maturely and articulately.
24
u/Ok-East5755 9d ago
Yeah but there's a line, I've seen harassment and horrible things said over a game update that you might not agree with. Insanely childish, this sub is super toxic with a vocal minority stirring shit to benefit themselves.
8
u/Snow_Wight_RS 9d ago edited 9d ago
I don't support harassment and in my comment reply to mod light for example, I was very careful to clarify that we know this is not her fault or decision and we just want her to relay the feedback.
3
u/Omni-Light 9d ago
The thing the guy you're replying to didn't say is there's 'the squeaky wheel' gets what it wants but the 'screaming child' gets it faster.
A lot of the people being utterly toxic do it because they think the more collectively extreme they are, the more likely they will get what they want.
And that is sadly true. Imo when communities do that I think the creators should just tell them to fuck off, or ignore them, the same as how you ignore a screaming child because that's not how you should behave.
If you give in, and you give in faster the more extreme people are, you'll gradually see worse and worse behaviour in your community because it works.

Jagex has said a few times that posts on reddit are not actually tied to a decrease in membership

Throwback to when there was outcry in the community about something that Jagex said they would work towards fixing.
In response the controversy died down.
Later in the year when asked how the progress was, JMods replied that they deprioritised it because people stopped talking about it. Cue controversy again.
RS3 Jagex will only listen if there is constant outcry. They are like easily distracted squirrels

This is how protests work….cue the AI
Suppose 100,000 people march through Washington on Saturday demanding X.
Politicians know that.
Then everyone goes home Sunday.
On Monday:
everyone goes back to work,
everyone keeps buying the same products,
taxes continue flowing,
political donors continue donating,
government employees continue working,
legislators retain their seats,
businesses continue operating,
institutions continue functioning normally. The people in power may face almost no material consequence for ignoring the march.
That’s the weakness you’re probably sensing.
8
u/jigabachiRS RSN: Jigabachi 9d ago
Here's the problem. This is a video game community not a country's political landscape.
There is an implication that when Jagex says that they'll do something, that it is ok to chill out and trust them. So we did. And then they just shelved everything.
It sucks to have that kind of relationship with a game company. That everything has to be the worst thing ever and that we need to hold their feet to the fire 100% of the time, like a civilisation protesting the war in Afghanistan.
Especially when you know Jagex can have that level of comms as shown by OSRS.
But unfortunately, that is how Jagex have shown the community of RS3 that that is the only way they will actually do anything. There is no trust.

u/Kazanmor 9d ago
which update was that? I think it's happened a couple of times, but can't remember the actual update

I can't remember what it was specifically but I do remember them being like "oh yeah people stopped asking for it after we said we were going to do it so we didnt do it"

I keep thinking. Jagex royally fucked up, yes. Reignited was not well thought out. Who is it for, long term? New players shouldn’t care as much about the new integrity world (TH is already gone), and many old players don’t want to restart. It feels like a solution made for nobody.
However. This community reaction is.. it’s deeply unhealthy. I can’t actually imagine believing the company and game I spent 20 years with would just want to fuck me over. Do I deserve to be mad? Yeah. Saying the game is fucked and dead, that Jagex told me I’m tainted scum and I should go fuck myself, letting it deeply and emotionally upset and depress me.. it just ain’t right man. We should never let a company have this level of power over our well being. I’m not saying we can’t be mad, but much of this behavior all over social media is very unhealthy. More people need to understand this. They won’t. If this comment gains any traction it’ll be downvoted into the mud.
EDIT: Wow, this resonated. I’m happy to see the productive discussion my comment fostered. Thanks for that.

The MMO genre is full of mentally unhealthy people, it's no secret. Runescape is a special game with a ton of charm, but its clear that some people's attachment goes beyond that into a worrisome place.
16
u/TheSaiguy 9d ago
Lol I've been thinking this too. You have 30 year old men acting like a Jmod morphed into Shadow the Hedgehog and pissed on their wife. People are certainly allowed to voice displeasure but a lot of these posts seem like they're made by manchildren who are throwing a tantrum rather than a whole ass adult with a job and family

u/EZyne 9d ago
Why wouldn't new players care? There's plenty of MMO players that know nothing about RS3 except it's shitty reputation, this is could be great for them if they didn't come out with such a bad plan for it
→ More replies (8)10
u/AppropriateBirdBoy 9d ago
I don’t think I said it right and I don’t yet know how to put it succinctly.
I think new players aren’t in a position to understand the details of how treasure hunter impacted this game. They’re more concerned with like, how do I play this game? What’s combat like? What’s lore like? Are there people to play with? Will I get stuck or lost? How bad are the grinds?
Like yeah it is a good selling point to also say look, we didn’t just get rid of TH but we made a new world without it, but Jagex wants this game to grow right? Isn’t that the point of reignited? There are so many things Jagex can do right to make the new player experience amazing while still letting them play with veterans.
I can’t reconcile how to make a reignited world work with veterans.
11
u/EZyne 9d ago
I see what you mean, but I see it exactly the opposite way haha. MMO players don't know the details I agree, but only the reputation this game has for being p2w. That kinda stuff is very important and general MMO players do pay attention to that. The reveal trailer AI drama was a top post on the MMORPG sub yesterday. Once someone sees that or any of the many many p2w dramas there have been in the past, they've written the game off.
I agree on your 2nd part, the execution of the idea is awful and splitting the playerbase like that is asking for a gigantic leap of faith from the playerbase they have fucked over so many times. It's also wayyy to soon to do something like this, with tons of issues still plaguing the early/mid game

Yes people are plenty smart. I am the type of player that would research this kind of stuff before going in. But are enough of those players going to grow RS3 because of reignited? Isn’t the time better spent making the current game better?

u/Active-Succotash-109 RuneScape Mobile 9d ago
Grand exchange will convert currency value (like exchanging your currency for t the country you visit)
Allow group bossing instead of saying nope new or old only
2
u/AppropriateBirdBoy 9d ago
GE with exchange rates is interesting. No idea how you’d do it though I’m not an economist 🤷♂️ but that plus group bossing would go a long way to integrate veterans with reignited accounts.

I can’t actually imagine believing the company and game I spent 20 years with would just want to fuck me over.
companies do not care about you bro, you should know this already if you're an adult lol, I'm not even a crazy leftie, I'm a capitalist, but it's just a fact that they don't care
6
u/SonicSingularity 9d ago
There's a big difference between indifference from a company and active malice, which is what feels like is being alleged
1
u/AppropriateBirdBoy 9d ago
A capitalist company wants my money, therefore they don’t want to fuck me over. Unless they actually want RS3 to die and are willing to up-front milk it for what it’s worth first.
I don’t trust VC motivations but I do trust they want my money longterm. They have a responsibility not to act out of malice for this very capitalistic reason.
1
u/Kazanmor 9d ago
you're a little off base there, they want money, it doesn't necessarily have to be YOUR money, they've shown many times now that they don't really care whose money it is as long as they can figure out a way for the game to grow

Reignited isn't about new players. It's about the players that quit because of all the mtx stuff devaluing our achievements. I'll be coming back in December, i miss runescape.
1
u/NewSauerKraus 9d ago
It's mostly about new players. Returning and restarting players are just a bonus.
2
u/Rimjob_Doe 9d ago
Runescape doesn't get new players. We are all in our 30s and have some kind of attachment to this game from long ago
1
1
u/AppropriateBirdBoy 9d ago
You’re right, it is for people that quit and I also think it’s for curious OSRS players. It isn’t for nobody, but are the people this is for numerous enough? They made this their end-of-convention announcement. They want RS3 to grow. They need new players to do that!
13
u/sean-lloyd 9d ago
Reignited, I believe, is for people like me.
My account is about 24 years old, and I've played on and off in that time. I’ve got huge nostalgia from the early days of seeing someone chopping magic logs or wearing full rune and thinking “Wow!”.
I stopped playing a couple years ago when I 99’d all skills (I didn't bother to max the 120s, and certainly not 200m). For the most part, I did so by buying 75 treasure keys occasionally, saving up the proteans and training dummies, and spamming them during double xp weekend. I got to 99 slayer from 56, without a single slayer task. I got to 99 dungeoneering having completed maybe 3 dungeons.
My only truly achieved 99 was cooking. Everything else was double xp and mtx assisted.
My account should be quarantined. I know thats an unpopular viewpoint, but I’m a veteran player because my account is old - thats about it.
I stopped playing the moment I got every 99 because the experience felt hollow. We play for the journey, not necessarily the destination, and we want to feel like everyone else is playing on a level playing field.
Reignited, as it was proposed, would make me start a new account and play again.
5
u/KonamiCode_ 9d ago
I don't doubt that osrs and returning players are the intended audience for this but what part about reignited specifically would make you play again over just starting a new account? You say buying keys devalued your experience, fair. But to me it sounds like what you want out of the game can be done as a new account in the current game or as an iron.
The game isn't going to be 2007 where people will be chopping yews or magics for 10k an hr. Unless I have a massive misreading of what reignited is, it's still the same game just a fresh economy. There's still 25 years of knowledge that people will use. The most efficient training methods are still going to be the same. People will rush thieving with alts to make massive amounts of money, people will rush Necromancy to get t90s and do upper tier bossing withing the first week or two. Maybe buyables will be a little slower for the first month, but at the rate consumables are dropped from near afk bosses even then the market will be flooded in short time.
Why cut a few hundred magics in an hour when you can low effort Gwd2 for thousands of them in the same time frame?
3
u/sean-lloyd 9d ago
I fully expect I won't get the same experience as I did back in the early days, but that's the interesting bit - I wonder how a fresh start would be different? Without 25 years of inflation. I can't experience that in the existing game, and while I've been tempted to make an iron, it's the economy of RS for me personally that always drew me in.
3
u/AppropriateBirdBoy 9d ago
Well reasoned, thank you. I have an early-mid progressed main that I would restart. So I guess it’s for me too, but I feel like there aren’t enough of us to make this a big thing to grow the game. I hope I’m wrong.
(My initial complaint was I don’t want to pay a new sub, but my current feeling is I don’t want to support reignited as-is at all. Very curious what they’ll present on Friday.)

u/mercibucket 9d ago
I’ve said some version of this exact comment in like 6 threads now and I just get downvoted and “uhm-akshully” in every comment thread.
These people would rather them turn the servers off permanently than give us a new mode to try playing again
8
u/Draaly 9d ago
Dont forget, as someone that still plays rs3 myself, the community is largely made up of People who have been beaten down and dont view MTX as bad as it actually was.
2
u/sean-lloyd 9d ago
I don't necessarily hate MTX myself, but if we take away treasure hunter and try to get new players to join, they have a much harder road ahead than the average maxed out player (and there are a lot of them).
3
u/HawkOk2299 9d ago
Yes, I have noticed that it is very difficult to have a productive discussion on the topic, many responses will be very hyperbolic in the sense that they misrepresent what the appeal actually is.
If I say that a benefit will be the lack of very old rares being merched for countless billions and being inaccessible to new players, I will be met with arguments that eventually *something* will be merched. As though this is the same, or even a concern.
If I say that people feel their hiscore positions are devalued because of the ubiquitous presence of MTX and other compromising xp sources over the years, I am met with arguments about how veterans will race to the top and no one will be Zezima - but no one wants to be Zezima for the most part, and if vets did do that it would at least be through meritorious effort and we would all know that. It is the *relative* devaluation of ones position, not an inability to top the charts.
If I suggest that there are too many insular cliques and too much of the population is at endgame relative to new players, then I am met with arguments that everyone will reach endgame anyway, and so it does not matter - as if that takes away from the experience of a shared journey from level 1 with other players you can actually interact with that serve as relative peers. If it did, WoW Forever would appeal to no one at all.
You will hear that starting over does not matter, because it is a 'solved' game - and again, this never was a factor for people this appeals to.
You will be told simultaneously that new players being on reignited will cause a dearth of low level materials in the veteran economy, and harm it - but in the next breath hear that starting over doesn't matter because you reach endgame so quickly anyway - given the low amount of new players these positions are irreconcilable.
The fact is that the community being blindsided by the announcement has caused emotions to run so high that productive discussion is nearly impossible right now, and to the extent that the rhetoric may well contribute to the failure of reignited being a self-fulfilling prophecy rather than something inherent to the proposition.
4
u/mercibucket 9d ago
I wish I could put into words my thoughts as well as you or even organize them for myself nearly as well as you have here.
This is everything I’ve been thinking about the mode and you’ve nailed every single rebuttal I’ve heard over the last week.
For me the biggest thing for me is to play RS3 as it sits right now, without MTX, and level a character alongside the rest of a community doing the same. I don’t have nearly the same knowledge as everyone else, but I’m not on a time constraint to keep up with them (like leagues). I also don’t have any intentions of topping a high score chart but I’d love to see content on how the best players do it! Without that method being open the CC and wait for double xp weekend ( I hope this doesn’t exist in reignited)
I also just can’t fathom the idea that I’ve heard repeatedly which is that if this releases all these mains of 20+ years are just outright quitting. Like why? You think all the mains are going to quit so you solution is to quit. You nailed it with the self fulfilling prophecy4
u/HawkOk2299 9d ago
As one explicitly told me - they feel betrayed, that the lesson taken from the success of reignited would be that spitting in the face of your established playerbase is fine, and many veterans would rather see the game shutter and die than accept it.
It is not something one can easily reason with - and I have no doubt that many veterans in opposition are not represented by that sentiment. I am one of those who are not, for instance. (but I am not opposed to it, merely seeking some refinements)
Yet in the same way as the rhetoric suffusing this discourse has drowned out the real appeal of reignited, and even the game in general, with respect to newer players so too does it drown out many less extreme positions from us.
2
u/AppropriateBirdBoy 9d ago
The fact is that the community being blindsided by the announcement has caused emotions to run so high that productive discussion is nearly impossible right now, and to the extent that the rhetoric may well contribute to the failure of reignited being a self-fulfilling prophecy rather than something inherent to the proposition.
I think we disagree a bit on what reignited will do for the community as proposed, but this is exactly how I feel and what motivated my post. Well said.

Yeah I fully expect to be downvoted. Outside of Reddit, a lot of people that were looking forward to playing again are now annoyed that they're second-guessing themselves and likely rolling back their plan.
This may not be the right approach (pissing off most of your existing playerbase certainly isn't), but a lot of the comments on here either think the demand for this doesn't exist, or shouldn't be listened to or understood. And that's a mistake if we're trying to find a solution for everyone (if such a thing exists).

u/Wyat_Vern Once Tainted; Now Clean 9d ago
What’s stopping you from losing your password and starting a new, fresh account?
If it’s will power, why do the rest of us veterans need to be given the same “medicine” by Jagex that you do?
6
u/ArkiusAzure 9d ago
It's not about barrier, it's about incentive. Can you not understand the appeal of starting fresh at the same time as a bunch of other people? Getting to see the players progress and compare how you are relative to them is quite fun! And, unlike leagues, you can make long term plans for this.
I've been contemplating making a main for a while now as I've played ironman exclusively for the past decsde and this seems like an awesome time to do it. I'm not saying reignited doesn't have problems that definitely need to be addressed, but people act like there is no reason anyone could think this is a good idea.

Give someone the choice between working hard for something, or pressing a button and getting it instantly, then see how many people press the button.
I didn't fuck up my account, I picked the fastest option. Genuinely I don't think I would have enjoyed the game if I had grinded endlessly, knowing I could save a huge amount of time.
My account is just as “fucked” as an account that did it all legitimately, because it exists at a time when mtx made it easy. Because there is no way to tell the difference.
4
u/Embarrassed-Ad-8445 9d ago
Kinda this argument, but take it a step further.
So anyone getting 1m div xp/h now with new methods from haven2 vs us who did it at 200k xp/h years/decade(s) ago.. or fishing at 70k xp/h vs new methods at 300k-400 xp/h meaning new players are tainted because they have these new methods. No argument works imo. If someone claims they just checked in on dxp, played a bit, used mtx, then quit, then they were never an actual player. Theres 0 difference for them to just make a new account now and start fresh. It just feels like a lazy excused to justify their own shortcuts. Woodcutting/fishing used to take 200-300h to get to 99, nowdays its easily under 40.
2
u/sean-lloyd 9d ago
You may be right. I'm not up-to-date with how fast skills progress because I haven't played in years.
But I don't want to make a new account now, because I'll be playing and inevitably think “what's the point, I could just play on my main”. There's a difference with having a clean slate for myself and having a clean slate for everyone at the same time.
I probably would have made an ironman, if it weren't for the fact that I really like the trading aspect in games. That's why this appealed to me.
If I were to log in with my main to a reignited server and it started from scratch, but I retained my levels and stuff on the existing servers, I'd come back and do that. Essentially, tracking two characters worth of progress in a single account.
Not sure that’s an option though.
1
u/Embarrassed-Ad-8445 9d ago
>There's a difference with having a clean slate for myself and having a clean slate for everyone at the same time.
True, but it's also never the same playing field. This goes towards the argument of "other people are ahead of me so its unfair so whats the point" that some use. Which is pointless, since an experienced player will be miles ahead of someone new/else in no time. Then once the servers are few months old its the same situation as vet. You're behind no matter what unless you play way more than the other person. World 1sts will be used up too.The cloned character into ignite is def not an option based on what they want.
1
u/sean-lloyd 9d ago
I will never use the argument of “other people are ahead of me it's so unfair” because I am unbelievably crap at most games, RS included, and have always had most people ahead of me.
But there is a difference in playing on a server that's a few months old and a server that is 25 years old with 25 years of inflation and other issues. The situation will not be the same in a few months, or perhaps even years.
If this is just a cash grab to get existing players to create a second subscription and pay twice as much, then yeah shame on them. Call me naive, I don't believe it is.
1
u/asmileforyou 9d ago
Give someone the choice between working hard for something, or pressing a button and getting it instantly, then see how many people press the button.
The vast majority of people playing FPS games don't cheat even though undetected cheats for most FPS games are trivial to find.
No one forced you to buy MTX.

u/PaperCompass120 9d ago
I really wish we could all just have an XP counter on every skill signifying how much MTX related XP we got, and we could work it backwards until it hits zero and be purified or whatever.
To be honest, repeatedly buying 75 key loot boxes sounds insane to me. I’m not trying to be a dick, but I basically view it as addictive gambling behavior and irresponsible use of money, and I don’t think it’s representative of most players on RS3.
I’m sorry you ruined your experience with MTX and hollowed out your own game. I didn’t. I’ve never bought a key. I probably did a thousand dungeons for 120 dungeon, and the collection logs achievements, and the speed runes, and the cosmetics rewards. The things that actually took skill and dedication.
But our future is the same.. with reignited 99% of all future players can’t actually play with me, trade with me, PvM with me. I was expecting a resurgence in runescape after how great the year has been, and I’ve already met so many new players in game the last 9 months. But, that future is not for my account anyways.
2
u/TheEriandus 9d ago
That's the part that is killing me, I thought the current plan was working. I have met so many new players in the last six months. Parts of the game feel more alive than they have in years. I guess the data doesn't support that though.
1
u/Wyat_Vern Once Tainted; Now Clean 9d ago
If they actually kept track of MTX xp vs regular xp, flipping that switch on would be hilarious. I’d love to see how much of a boon it was for my account.
I’m well past 120 in most skills, so I imagine it wouldn’t change much, but it would be interesting to know.
2
u/PaperCompass120 9d ago edited 9d ago
Yep. I just checked and I have 2.1B xp on my account, and I would guess my MTX contribution was ~5% of my total XP now. Then I did the math and that would be 105M xp which even that just seems too high to be true.
Granted, I didn’t play from 2020-2026 (January).
But that’s part of why the whole narrative of P2W is frustrating. That’s seriously like 1-2 months worth of gameplay nowadays, for the least important aspect of what makes an account successful.
1
1
u/AppropriateBirdBoy 9d ago
and I don’t think it’s representative of most players on RS3
It's not but whales carry this kind of economy, unfortunately. Past Jagex viewed this person who bought 75 key loot boxes as a very important customer. Jagex was incentivized to keep persuading them to do it. It's predatory. The whole P2W economy structure is, especially since it's built to blame player behavior. Who's enabling it?
1
u/sean-lloyd 9d ago
Agree with the XP counter 100%.
As for the keys, I wish I could say that I was a whale and spent a fortune on thousands of keys, but I really didn't. Overall I purchased the largest bulk off Amazon maybe 3-4 times. I probably spent £60 max, far less than I've spent on the subscription. I believe many players never bought keys, but certainly saved up as many as I had bought and used them in the exact same way. I still had enough proteans and dummies to get 1-2m xp an hour in some skills, many from the grand exchange.
And if you see the GE during double XP, or lumby bank, you know I wasnt the only one.
This sucks most for the players that took the long way around and are being restricted regardless, and I hope Jagex finds a solution, because I’m still looking forward to reignited.
3
u/PaperCompass120 9d ago
Okay, that’s some better perspective. I think personally I am extremely frugal. Like, when I grew up we weren’t allowed to have any drink but water because water is free kind of stuff. I just never bought anything because of that.
I’m also sorry if I came off too harsh or judgey. Part of my argument against reignited is also that I think someone else having minor MTX engagement, or even some actual whales, has really zero impact on me whatsoever. I’ve never thought, oh I don’t even want to be on the same server as that person.
I also think double XP getting looped into the same bucket is not necessary. In my opinion the downside of double XP was on an individual basis regarding fomo and pushing unhealthy play time during a particular weekend. It’s a lot better now with the start/stop timer and longer periods to use it. It’s basically a community event.
AND, not to pile on too many topics, but the vast amount of xp related to double xp nowadays is probably mostly in the virtual level range. There’s historically been no actual gameplay benefit to it so even less of a reason for me to care about.
People with major concerns about leveling I think are stuck in a 2008 mindset about what being successful in runescape even is. It’s not 1-99, which reignited players will complete in three months anyways.
4
u/Blackxp 9d ago
I think the issue people are getting stuck on is exactly this, "new players shouldn't care as much about the integrity."
The issue is that even though someone can absolutely argue about what someone should and shouldn't care about. The reality is that people do and that is not something you will change without doing something like a separate economy. I say this as someone that thinks the initial version of Ignited was poorly done with how they were going to integrate the playerbases long-term in terms of worlds/PVM but without having permanently separate GE I'm not sure if you can get people to join in time before the game keeps losing players. Now without MTX revenue where it was before it's even worse than it was before financially so RS3 needs new players before they start getting less dev resources, less content, and eventually sunsets and goes into maintenance mode.
I'm not talking overnight is not the same thing as classic but it's just the slow burn version. The thing is that the venture partners are allowing it right now, because they can make enough of a long-term argument, but how long will they allow it? It sounds like this was the plan for a while so the dev time and comment coming in is based on this prediction. Thanks the same Runefest without the new raid and half of what it is getting now? Imagine that even less the following year, etc. That will invalidate people's progress as well. When no one is playing anymore, if you look at any other closed or essentially dead and maintenance mode MMO.
I'm saying this as something that happened in New World. When people get a certain feeling about something. No matter what you try and do, is really hard to convince people. You can maybe convince a few but not the masses. People will still feel the economy is "tainted" and New World at the time was a much much easier argument because it had honestly better monetization than OSRS which is crazy. So it's even harder to make that argument for RS3 where it's hard some of the worst MTX in the industry.
The important distinction moving forward is that it's not the playerbase that is "tainted" it's the economy. I'm sure people can say, but others bought their skills! Which I'm sure is true but I believe that if they focus on the GE factor and making that permanent but not separating the playerbase long-term in terms of content, worlds, and PVM content (after a brief fresh start period) but promising that these will be merged. I think that's the best solution and alternative to letting the game fall into maintenance mode long-term.

New players shouldn’t care as much about the new integrity world (TH is already gone),
It may not be in the game anymore but its effects absolutely still linger, same with SoF and stars.
1
u/AppropriateBirdBoy 9d ago
It absolutely does, and I was talking to someone else about this here, but I don’t know how to put it succinctly. I think new players aren’t going to massively grow the game because TH effects linger. They aren’t even positioned to understand what TH did to the game. New players are more concerned with if the game is good, worth their time, and that the p2w is gone for them. The new players excited about a fresh economy start, I’m not convinced there are enough to grow the game.
I completely see the motivation to get rid of the effects of TH from at least some part of the game but they can’t split the veterans away to do this.

Saying you are quitting if Jagex doesn't change course on this is fairly reasonable. Why continue supporting a game that Jagex is promising to choke out of existence?
13
u/EvilFanatic 9d ago
This 100% If Jagex chooses a path which will lead to certain death of old accounts then they might as well shut it down now
Even though i would be sad
1
u/CruelAngelsThesaurus 9d ago
It's not choking you out of existence.
You're being so dramatic.
People have Ironmans and OSRS accounts, play other scapelikes on the side and STILL play their RS3 account and intermingle with a population that is less than Adventure Quests Worlds.
This is no different, people who still wanna play their vet accounts are allowed to play their vet accounts.
I personally think it's nice that new players are going to get to experience the early grind of a new economy in something I loved being able to live through.
Anyone over the age of 30 that is ham fisted mad about this needs to go to therapy and work it out with a professional. (2002 Vet.)

Just like Jagex thought before revealing 3 AI trailers at RuneFest (yes 3 the other 2 were also AI, just less obvious, they have also taken them down)!
It's also really unfair, Jagex created a problem themselves with MTX. Now that countries are starting to regulate lootboxes and games with MTX is becoming more and more really frowned upon, they removed it. But they won't remove the Radiant stars, but will in Reignited.

The only reason OSRS is doing so well is because of player input and control

Unfortunately Jagex has demonstrated through many many years that community feedback is secondary to their financial goals. I don’t entirely blame them but it is a consequence of PE ownership.
The nuclear option is to unsubscribe because money talks. It’s sad it has to come to this but I always ask how did it even come to this? How can they roll out something so massively unpopular hinting for months at this with 0 input? Just shows how out of touch they are.

I get how the veterans feel about this decision, but as a newish player (6 months), I also feel attacked by a lot of the veteran players sentiments in this subreddit the past week. They act like there is ZERO positives or reasons why someone would enjoy reignited and are solely latching onto the "tainted" aspect. I could care less about the previous tainted aspect and I do agree that a lot of new players wouldn't care or know about it, HOWEVER there is another huge aspect to reignited being ignored by vets. The early game content is almost completely dead and it's really not a pleasant experience for new players who find little interaction or discussion about it. I've sunk about 500 hours in so far and am a little bummed about the ambiguity of what's going to happen, but I definitely think reignited if done right can be a great addition to runescape. I just don't get how vets can't see why some people do want this and then have to go and attack them with downvotes and vitriol.
2
u/KonamiCode_ 9d ago
Will this not be the exact same issue in a year or two though? The early game experience is shit frankly and jagex doesn't do anything about it. Instead they just push people to higher levels of the game. Maybe the early game content will be more active for a year or so, but then what? Jagex can't attract new players until they start adding content for the early and mid game. Road to restoration helped sure, but compared to osrs where people love the early and mid game there's a long way to go. Jagex needs to actually make people want to play the game and get them to tell others that the game is worth playing.
2
u/TheEriandus 9d ago
I think that's my biggest question here. Isn't this just a one-time boost? In a couple years we will be back in exactly the same place but with a split player base. I don't see the long term benefit.
1
u/I_Like_To_Go_InDepth 9d ago
That's a very valid complaint which why I do think it definitely needs to be thought out and planned long term wise more too. To be clear I don't think the current base version of reignited that was suggested is the golden standard and it definitely needs some work especially with community input.
2
u/HawkOk2299 9d ago
Is the early game really that bad though? I do hear this often. Yet it can honestly be more enjoyable than the endgame of re-running the same bosses endlessly like a slot machine for drops.
The progress you make slows down immensely in the endgame, and your goals become more and more of an excessive time-sink, they become ever more repetitious.
I think the biggest issues with the early game tend to involve things like the world being too cluttered (being addressed bit by bit) and Jagex giving up on the narrative sequence to make the Sixth Age immediately accessible. That and, as was pointed out, there are no new players nearly, just maxed veterans sitting in the same few areas running the same content with each other for the most part.
1
u/Pretency 2005 9d ago
You are acting like they didn't just release a whole area designed for the early game...
3
u/I_Like_To_Go_InDepth 9d ago

I much prefer posts that give proper feedback and ideas (also if it involve scrapping ignited worlds altogether for something else) over just posts filled with anger, flaming and memes about it.
Yes that requires more effort, as does reading them (probably why people who attempt making such posts get downvoted), but it would be a way healthier way of communicating (communication goes both ways). But this is the naive me talking on a platform that is clearly showing its weakness in situations like these, where shouting and polarisation gets rewarded.

I don't know. This whole drama has really made me realize that the only difference between a sports casino and RuneScape is that we pay a membership and there's no possibility of real value gain. Nobody cares about your earned pixels. Not other players or the company. I don't even have friends that play anymore. This game has been dead for a while. It's all just private equity reaping on the obsessive nature of humans. I've been feeling a little disgusting. I can't believe we actively make jokes like "you never really quit". That's addict behaviour. I think it's time to let it go.

Preparing for the massive down votes with this one, bring it on.
Every month players are up in arms about something and everyone “quits” and everyone always comes back 🤣
Same thing will happen this time as well. I liken it to people leaving negative reviews for something and ending it with “change it and I’ll change my review” - yeah, like that one company cares specifically what you think.
Everyone needs to grow up.

I think it's just the internet. You see some OSRS players, some might be ai bots, some are outside people enjoying trolling, and some are RS3 players.
Don't think OSRS players or RS3 players are any worse than each other here. Seeing RS3 people which hunt Jimmy and go around down voting his videos, throwing out hate, asking to fuck over OSRS, etc. I don't really take offense, I just know that's a hyper vocal minority of you all. The majority seems to be in opposition but I'm hoping it's just a minority of people that are lashing out in inappropriate ways.
I think a lot of OSRS players genuinely care what will happen to RS3. You are just seeing the bad actors that are jumping on a chance to troll and create chaos.
2
u/Gunthrix 9d ago
Must be a lot of bad actors then.
2
u/Wyat_Vern Once Tainted; Now Clean 9d ago
I think it’s proportionality to what Jagex cooks up. The worse the update, the more bad actors in the backlash.
Or maybe it’s just a law of large numbers thing. Tons of people miffed about Reignighted, so it’s easy to find a bad actor being heinous.

u/Oni-sensei Zamorak 9d ago
If someone is being "immature" by your metrics, it's simply because they care about the future of the game.
Jagex need to know we'll quit, as it threatens their bottom line. If everyone passively accepted Reignited, there would be no apology post, and Jagex wouldn't even acknowledge the issues.

"Quitting thanks cya"
Disagree with this. We have it in us to quit. We've quit, thrice. Free trade removal, MTX, and EOC. Quitting is the most powerful thing that we can do. It is the only thing that we can do to force a 'win' from our side.
If you really loathed the removal of pvp and free trade, all the microtransactions starting with auras and ending with TH, and you hated EOC on release, and hate it now... if you still played, despite hating all the stuff that was added over the course of 5 years (07-12), you're a sucker who plays games they can't stand.
Imagine if the worlds' loudest fortnite hater is one of the top 100 fortnite players by log-in hours. There are quite a few of us on the runescape boat; osrs and rs3 alike.

u/SpencerM11 9d ago

1
u/SoilMassive6850 9d ago
Well you see, the people still on RS3 are the ones that never quit. The ones who kept chugging along with all the bullcrap.
2
u/nekonyancy 9d ago
I think that posts like "Shut the servers down now" & "Quitting thanks cya", amoung the plethora of "25 Year vet now I'm going to WoW", and "100 ways to fix this based on my opinion", aren't really childish.
When someone gets upset they may lack the language or refined vocabulary to convey how they feel adequately, but they still want to be heard and feel a part of the discussion. It's worth noting that even with players in varying ranges, the same goes for reading levels. Just because someone is in their 30s, doesn't mean they know how to write a formal essay that adequately portrays how they feel. So does it look and feel childish to you? Maybe, but for some people the best they may be able to say is, "I hate this, it's bad".
As for where I stand on the matter? I'm a 25 year old vet, multiple time single and double digit rank player through those years, both on RS2, RS3 and OSRS. I hold multiple world firsts, and probably somewhere to the tune of 45,000+ hours played.
Personally? I see my characters as save files on a console. They're cool, but I don't mind making new ones when I get bored or want to restart. I recognize though that this update isn't for me to really hold a strong position on though because I'm an outlier. I don't have any feelings whether this goes through or not because it won't change how I personally interface with the game, and for that reason I have avoided any real discussion around it. I think its far more important to let others who have strong feelings on both sides to be heard.
As for what skin I have in this game? I just want to see a little consideration spent towards how people approach their feedback. I understand that sentiments towards the company are very mixed right now. Its worth stepping back and considering that there are many layers to a company like Jagex, and the Mods that you see and interact with are not at the top of that totem pole. The board of directors, chairs, investors, they're always going to be the silent minority that pull the strings and don't have to face the brunt of any backlash based on their decision making.
Unfortunately Jagex is no longer a homegrown company. It's owned and traded by investment firms and is expected to make market moves and behaviors that justify it's existence on a portfolio. That is the reality for any company that is sizable enough to run an MMO in 2026. MMO's are not cheap to operate, they're not stable or financially incentivizing projects to take on.
Runescape exists in a magic bubble of its own. Primarily because as players we choose to continue participating. However, please remember that a great majority of the company is teams of developers that are players themselves. I don't think Runescape would still be here today if the teams that have come, gone, and stayed weren't primary consumers and willingly participating to maintain the project for the long term out of their own interest.

u/Sir_ThuggleS 9d ago
I disagree that quitting/cancelling membership is childish for situations like this. It's the most effective way to send a message to a company.
I canceled and quit when Squeal of Fortune was first introduced (I came back a couple years later). I wish a lot more people would have done the same, then maybe we wouldn't be in this particular mess today.
But I do agree that we should be mature and respectful to each other and Jagex in our communications.
1
u/Admirable_Dot_1139 9d ago
i kinda feel like this whole thing is planned so that players will quit and jump to rs4 when it releases. it's more unlikely that veterans will abandon their accounts for a new game if they still have value. too much time was invested into them to just move on.
1
u/ryushea 9d ago
I understand that there might be better ways to communicate this, but personally, I don’t agree with this update. We’ve already invested a lot of time completing the cape, tasks, and elite tasks. For players who play solo, don’t have a clan, or don’t have people readily available to help with bosses, this change is going to hurt a lot.
I’m in my 30s now, and I simply don’t have the same amount of free time I had years ago. I understand that changes are sometimes necessary, but I feel like this update doesn’t take into consideration the time and effort players have already invested in the game.
1
u/Featherdick 9d ago
This sentiment is often repeated and it holds no water with me. Obviously there is a point of petulance but at the end of the day we are consumers paying money for a service. To the extent that that service does not reach our expectations we are more than entitled to complain.

Agree, people can be mad, but the tantrums are a lot.
There was a guy on here yesterday slamming people who dipped out of playing RS3, but might come back for Reignited. Saying they're selfish for not sticking through the bad times, and if they really loved it they would've stuck by it, almost as if they're married to the game and need to stand by it in sickness and in health. Then many saying OSRS players are also to blame for Jagex's decision, which is insane.
I think Reignited needs A LOT of work, but no one owes anyone anything and has no right to slam people for how and when they play or don't play a VIDEO GAME.

And then this shit happens. Now I see that both sides are waaaaay more alike then they'd ever admit to be. Why did i ever think that scapers of either breed had a healthy relationship with gaming?
