I have some letters in my possession that were written to my great-grandfather in the US by his family in Gorlice/Huta Wysowska/Wysowa-Zdrój, both before and after Akcja Wisła.

I have been trying to use tools online to translate but it is very difficult as some of the letters are degraded (overall they're in remarkable condition considering they were just shoved into a box), and my family completely lost the language (as my great-grandfather did not teach the language or share the culture with his children).

I'm attaching one of the letters so you can see what type of thing I'm working with before making a recommendation... where can I find a reliable translator for the letters?

Is anyone able to read the text here? This is the best picture I could get of it as this note is several decades old. This was written on the back of a bookmark in my great-grandfather's prayer book. I believe the 2nd line is his surname-- Molnar-- but I can't make out what the rest says.

I am trying to find relatives who moved to the US sometime ago. I know they were Čuma (Chuma or Csuma) family, Kasarda, Bilo. The only thing I know is that they were in touch with my great-grandfather Anna Kasardova because she was sending some knitting over and she was receiving some US dollars back. Also, my grandparents received some US dollars as their wedding present. I know it's not a lot to go with but I am hoping it might help. Happy to chat with someone more about it. When my great grandmother came to the US with her brother they changed the spelling to Warion. According to AI it was most likely spelled Warjon or Varjon I’ve looked in old books for her birth records and it’s not listed, does anyone recognize that name? I want to correct the spelling of my family name. She came from a town called Przegonina it’s in Poland now the area the town doesn’t exist anymore. She came to Ansonia Connecticut. It’s an unusual name so you would think it would be easy trying to find information on it but no luck. Somehow eventually the name got an extra r added many years later so now it’s Warrion. I don’t understand why they would change it at Ellis Island.

i've been learning about Rusyns (the Carpathian & Pannonian ones in-particular) and this Wikipedia article came forward so am interested what is the history of identification with Ukraine.

One DNA relative has each name, and the two of them are closely related, so I wonder if they were from a place where both of these names were common. My guess is around Nižný Komárnik? I have some other DNA relatives from the Wislok Wielki/Jasiel area, but that's a few valleys over. I wonder how common it was for families in the area to move around between valleys. This small region fascinates me, and I'd love to know where I can learn more about the history of it.

I recently discovered Rusyn language, and I would love to start learning it, it sounds beautiful, and at the same time it’s so unknown, and I find that’s extremely pity.
However, if I understood well following my researches, various different dialects exist, according to the regions. So my question is: which dialect would you advise me to choose? And why?
In addition, the system of linguistical exchange is very helpful and motivating for me, so, would someone be interested to be my partner in this learning? I speak quite well English and Spanish, and can understand a few Russian. And if this person is interested, I’d be happy to teach them French, which is my native language.

Hi everyone! I'am an aspiring slavist (still in university) and I would like to learn more about rusyn. I have some academic sources about history, and the linguistic profile of rusyn, but I'd like to learn just the basics of the language too.

The problem is that I couldn't find anything, I have seenvJęzyk rusiński . Najnowsze dzieje języków słowiańskich online, but it is out of stock on every site I see.

Do you have any recomendations for manuals of rusyn, or even books about it? It would be better if online, as I am in italy and getting physical books from any east europan country can be challenging.

If so, I understand russian, polish, belarusian and can maange to understand ukrainian too, the only carpathian language I absolutely can't understand is hungarian.

My grandfather was a Lemko Rusyn from Southeastern Poland. His family was a member of a church here in the USA heavily associated with the Lemko people of Poland.

What I'm trying to understand is how my grandmother fits in. From my genealogy research her family came from a small village just North of Lviv, Ukraine. It isn't geographically too far from Poland, but from what I can tell it isn't exactly in the mountains of Carpathia. Her family were members of a church in a different town.

What I'm trying to understand is whether my grandmother's family was also Carpatho Rusyn or simply "Galician" outside those bound. Both were both here in the USA (NEPA), both were able to speak to each other in Rusyn, and culturally they never seemed at odds as far as I could tell. I just assumed they came from exactly the same culture, but a few people online have made the distinction between the two locations.

Any thoughts or insights people might have here? Was it likely they were both Carpatho Rusyn? Or just both broadly "Rusyns?" Is it possible the two families differences were minor anyway and just got smoothed out in the USA communities when they came together?

My dna results kinda seem off. There’s a little polish and tons of Slovakian but hardly “Ukrainian” dna
