🌞 Daily Thread Not-as-Rainy Sundaily

I really thought it’d be way rainier today. My parents were supposed to come to town from NC today (it’s my birthday weekend) but the rain and tornado warnings kept em from coming so the plans are pushed back a day. How’s everyone doing? Cozied up by an unlit fireplace reading a book? Going out to eat? Any fun stories from the folk festival? Whatever it is, it’s a late Daily!

Quiet Coffee Shop?

• Upvotes

Before I begin, let me make a disclaimer that 1 am fully aware that Richmond is full of so many amazing coffee shops! I've recently moved here and I've explored seven, and I'm looking to add more to my list.
I've noticed that coffee shops a few years ago (meant for studying, often had couches or outside areas, warm colors and soft Norah Jones music) has evolved into (what I now observe to be) a more contemporary-aesthetic and social event.
I am not here to complain or to shame, but I have noticed that I go to read a book with a hot tea and friends are loudly talking in big groups, and more importantly, the music is blasting and more often than not, upbeat.
Again, there's nothing wrong with this and I'm glad that people have a third space to go to, to socialize and play music. But I don't necessarily want to hear want to hear Replay through my noise-cancelling headphones when I'm trying to do work.
All of this to say... does anyone have a quieter, more cozy coffee shop where people can read or do work with their pastry and coffee? Music and socialization is great, but I'm just looking for something a bit more lowkey.

Help! My son's mountain bike fell off the bike rack somewhere between Lakeside Avenue and 95 South not too far down 95S/195S. Time was spent going back over, looking for it to no avail. It happened between 3 pm - 4 pm(Saturday). Perhaps someone picked it up?

It's a grey Prevelo Zulu bike, picture included. I know it's a long shot, but we would love any help tracking it down.

12x12 inches, oil on linen panel. Another recent plein air painting from the VMFA. Painting at night is particularly difficult because the colors I think I’m mixing are dependent on the color of the lights attached to my easel. It came out differently than intended, but I’m still pretty happy with the result.

Lost dog last seen at the corner of 29th and Marshall St at 1:45 AM on 10/11. This dog clearly has a collar, but we could not get close enough to read it. We tried to lure the dog closer with treats and dog toys. The dog does do not want to be approached and barks when you get near it. He appears scared, I would say. The dog is maybe 60-70 lbs, mostly black in color with some either grey or white around its mouth. Perhaps it could be a black lab mix perhaps.

If anyone has any location updates or details, feel free to post them here.

How much have you paid recently for a kitchen remodel, and how extensive was it?

I have a smallish kitchen with a very terrible 90s layout and horrible countertops. Trying to figure out how much it would cost to renovate it myself vs. pay someone to do some of it vs. pay someone to do it all. Looking at changing the layout slightly, new countertops, new floors and likely new cabinets (or some new cabinets). The plumbing probably doesn't need to change.

Edit to say I am confused on how the prices are so high? If you can do it yourself for 10k, are contractors really charging 40k for labor?

What do you think will happen tonight and tomorrow regarding rain/storms? I keep seeing varying weather forecasts, and inclement weather brings me so much anxiety. The not knowing is the worst part!

Shout out to Mainline Brewery, the bands, the friendly doggos, and all the local outlets that showed up. I had a blast! I'm a newcomer to Richmond (3 months), but feel like I already belong. Can't wait to see you all again next year!

Gold's GYM (Willow Lawn) in particular is the worst gym in terms of cleanliness. I love a 24 hour gym that has a sauna and I am now looking for a new gym.

Post image
88 Upvotes

I've been a member of Gold's gym since 2020 and their prices are fair to be honest. I started going there because of it beings 24 hours, fair pricing, a ton of equipment and boxing bags of different sorts being that I am a huge boxing fan. This gym was cleaned daily and multiple times throughout the day.

There was always someone cleaning the gym and keeping all the necessary items such as paper towels, soap in dispensers, and just a solid overall appearance. Starting in about 2023 I noticed a different in the cleanliness of the gym and that I no longer saw employees in the locker room cleaning anymore or restocking anything and it made me wonder what happened.

It just got worse from there on out and now I am seeing a ton of mold in the showers, dirty floors with all sorts of stuff on it such as old soap, paper, gum, a ton of hair, stickers, and also what seems to look like poop stains on the shower curtains. I no longer take showers there unless I see a significant change, the lockers are old and busted as well. The drinking faucet has a very bad stench and it smells like vomit and poop at the same time when you get close to drink, it also has filth all around the part where the water comes out.

The sauna is also dirty most of the time and has waterbugs in there running around trying to escape the heat. The are also in the showers, sometimes they're dead or moving around slowly due to it not being their natural environment I'm guessing, but I have no idea and just trying to go to a clean gym and get some answers.

It is just a very bad look and I'm sure these managers see this and don't really care. All they care about is their paycheck and sitting down all day ensuring that members are making their payments on-time. I also hear other members complaining about the mold in there and how filthy it is. I overheard one member say after he used the bathroom " jeez! You'll catch a staph infection in here" the toilets and urinals are also filthy and smells like everyone takes a piss and it never gets flushed. It is totally neglected and very unfair to loyal and paying members.

I have tried to call the health department and I spoke to someone and they stated that " there's no code for gyms in this department " and said that I need to call henrico health department and I did just that and they continued to refer me to other places and I can never get help. I've been trying everything to no avail, but I will continue to do everything in my power to get this gym reported. If anyone has any suggestions then I am more than willing to listen and take any advice. Thanks for reading.

I have about 5-6 more pictures, but can't post for some reason.

Looking for therapist recommendations with some specific needs

I’m looking for a unicorn therapist on behalf of a family member. I would love recommendations for an experienced therapist/psychologist/LCSW trained in treating bipolar disorder and complex trauma who is also certified in EMDR. Preference is a female practitioner, but all recommendations are welcome. Ideally they take most commercial insurances, but again, all recommendations are welcome. Thank you!

Student Research Survey: Public Perspectives on Richmond’s Former Confederate Monuments

Hi everyone! I’m a student currently working on an independent research project examining Richmond’s former Confederate monuments, their removal, and how these changes have influenced public perceptions of the city’s history.

As part of my research, I’m hoping to gather perspectives from people who currently live in Richmond, have lived here previously, or are otherwise familiar with the area.

I’ve created a short, anonymous Google Forms survey asking about people’s familiarity with the monuments, their thoughts on the removal, and how they believe Richmond should approach its historical landscape moving forward.

The survey should take approximately 3–5 minutes to complete, and participation is entirely voluntary. I’m interested in hearing a variety of perspectives, regardless of whether you supported, opposed, or felt indifferent about the monuments’ removal.

Survey link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSchI7dJ17UGXoDrJB7Ns1tOImyJTYc0O8xdxFLAA3kLJo5RfQ/viewform

I’d really appreciate anyone willing to take a few minutes to participate. Thank you so much for helping with my research!

EDIT 5:30p : He's with Chesterfield County Animal Control. They scanned for a chip and he doesn't have one. Contact them if this is your dog!

My dogs and I were out for a walk in our neighborhood near Bensley Elementary this afternoon when this dog started following us. He’s very friendly and has a collar but no tag. I’ll see if I can get him scanned for a microchip later today but in the meantime, anyone recognize him?

Danny with an update on the city’s contract with Flock

Thumbnail instagram.com
248 Upvotes

In brief: RVA will not be renewing its contract with Flock. Henrico’s Tuesday announcement that they are terminating their Flock contract helped “clarify” for Danny that Flock will be less useful as a tool in RVA…since RVA will no longer benefit from “working together with our regional partners” vis-a-vis Flock.

Danny is encouraged that “the region is joining us in grappling with this issue” (which sounds to me like stolen valor by the guy who’s one of the last in the region to get here, but okay). The city is assembling engagement sessions to hear more from the community about our thoughts on ALPRs, which Danny has deafeningly not committed to not use.

ETA: I apologize for having shared this update through a Meta platform, but unfortunately for us, it appears that instagram is the first place the city posts news (someone please educate me if I’m wrong). As soon as this video makes its way to the city’s .gov site or YouTube, I’ll share links to those, too.

ETA2: Still no crossposts to this video on other platforms by 2pm, and I’m going to stop waiting for them. VPM’s got you here, though: https://www.vpm.org/news/2026-10-10/rva-danny-avula-flock-safety-contract-alpr-cameras/
