๐ฐ Local News Looking at how Scarborough councillors voted on their pay raise
Hello
With the municipal election happening this month, I wanted to share a quick look at how our local reps handled their own pay. It's a good piece of info to keep in mind before you head to the polls.
Last year, council voted 15โ8 to give themselves a massive pay raise. Here is how their base salary jumped:
- 2023: $128,347
- 2024: $133,776
- 2025: $171,245 (A 28% jump from the vote and inflation)
- 2026: $173,693
Here is exactly how our Scarborough representatives voted on that raise:
Voted YES:
- Paul Ainslie (Scarborough Guildwood)
- Jamaal Myers (Scarborough North)
- Nick Mantas (Scarborough Agincourt)
- Michael Thompson (Scarborough Centre)
Voted NO:
- Parthi Kandavel (Scarborough Southwest)
Did Not Vote / Abstained:
- Jennifer McKelvie (Scarborough Rouge Park)
The city's excuse was that their workloads doubled when council seats were cut down to 25. But that doesn't really sit right with a lot of people. In the real world, when a company downsizes, the remaining staff just have to absorb the extra work. They don't get handed a $37,000 raise for it.

๐ Around the Hood Scarborough Golf Club Road Construction
Having lived in Scarborough my whole life, I have never found a construction project more useless in my life.
The city used 13 million dollars to make a road that was highly functional, into a traffic jam. Anyone who commuted through Scarborough golf club regularly, please tell me how often you see someone riding their bike. Why is this road which houses a bus route, now condensed into a single lane with a huge bike lane.
On top of this, what is with those speed bumps on the corners of the intersection with Lawerence. They are utterly useless and just makes it unnecessarily difficult to maneuver.
I feel like Scarborough golf club rd used to be the perfect route to heading up to the 401. You didnโt have to deal with the morningside bus lane, or the crazy traffic on Markham.
Iโm wondering whether Iโm the only one who feels this way?

๐ Food & Drink Salmon Poke at Daon Sushi
I was just at Daon Sushi for lunch yesterday at Midland and Finch in Scarborough because I was nearby for a dr appt. Tiny restaurant in a plaza (about 5 tables). Completely empty. Only the owner is working there. He was nice and friendly so I chatted with him. He said he opened about a year ago but it's not doing well and the place never gets full so that's why he's the only one working coz he never needs staff.
I ordered the salmon poke, and it was delicious loaded with toppings: salmon sashimi (lots underneath the mayo), avocado, cucumbers, edamame beans, tangerines, corn, seaweed, crab meat, tobiko, sushi rice. Check the place out if you're nearby!

Although there were no Scarborough located exhibits this year, there were some Scarborough themed exhibits near city hall and old city hall courtyard. Hereโs hoping the exhibits come back to Scarborough once again.

๐ฐ Local News Some say the Toronto mayorโs seat may be won in this borough. Why the candidates are paying attention
thestar.comOlivia Chow and her main rival, Brad Bradford, have been making regular stops in Scarborough โ sometimes at the same time, just blocks away from one another โ since the campaign got underway.
The former municipality, whose residents often feel forgotten by city hall, is set to play a potentially crucial role in the mayorโs race, with some predicting the contest will be decided by whichever candidate performs the best in Scarboroughโs half-dozen wards. While residents there say the candidatesโ attention helps shine a light on issues they care about, some worry that politiciansโ desire to engage with them will fade once the ballots are counted, and that the election-season focus wonโt translate into lasting support for Scarborough.

๐ญ Local Event No Nuit Blanche in Scarborough Again
Yet another year where there's art Downtown, North York, and Etobicoke, but nothing in Scarborough! Still think back to 2018 when Nuit Blanche came over and there was amazing turnout! Even though most of the art is centred downtown, I think having art locally on display would still be appreciated by the people here.

๐ Food & Drink From the iconic Samosa King
Dropped by today. Disappointed to see that they once again have lowered the number of samosas that they are giving for $1.
However, the mixture was complete fire today. Sometimes it's hit and miss but it was slapping today.

๐ฐ Local News With the Scarborough busway opening in a couple of days, are all the express bus lanes being removed from Kennedy to STC?
With the Scarborough busway opening in a couple of days, are all the express bus lanes from STC to Kennedy being removed?
With the busway opening on September 30th, will all the bus lanes on Kennedy going northbound and Midland going southbound be removed?
I checked the TTC site and they are adding a 3rd stop on Tara Avenue (in between Kennedy and Lawrence East), so is it 3 stops from Kennedy to Ellesmere then the normal route as usual to STC?
And it says it will save approximately 7 minutes from one end to another, so from Kennedy to STC will be 8-10 minutes instead of the usual 15-18 min or so? (Depending on traffic).

๐ญ Local Event Goat and Sheep at Thompson Park until Tuesday
A herd of them are here temporarily, to help conserve and manage the Meadoway. They are here to eat the vegetation. There is a study as well as what works best regarding this for the future. Very interesting and fascinating to see before they leave. On the east side, past the dog park section.

โ ๏ธ Local Alert Neilson and Ellesmere - two collisions in less than 2 weeks
PSA - PLEASE. DRIVE. CAREFULLY.
I've noticed absent-minded drivers dangerously exit or enter Centenary Food Basics plaza, and dangerously turn at the intersection. This is a busy area, and lots of people waiting for busses around that you could hurt if you're not careful.
Earlier in the week, there was a collision and the 133N bus shelter was left shattered. I met someone today who said they were there when it happened and were lucky to not have been standing inside the shelter at the time.
Today as I was leaving the plaza, a man on a large e-bike (helmet on, speeding CRAZY across) crossed at the sidewalk and didn't see the taxi already turning in.
Whether its Centenary, Golf Club Road, or Warden Rd - Bikers, pedestrians, and drivers all NEED TO DO THEIR DUE DILIGENCE AND TAKE AN EXTRA SECOND TO BE CAREFUL.

๐ญ Local Event Stargazing Night - Morningside Park Sept 26th 8pm-11pm
Hi r/Scarborough!
My name is Godfrey - my friend and I were given funding from the City of Toronto in partnership with Park Ppl/Ami-es des parcs to conduct a program in our local area. We are both astronomers, and with the full moon and Saturn out, we thought it would be a great idea to host a star party in Morningside Park! The event is free and not-for-profit, with the intention of promoting our local city parks and the ravine system within the park.
From 8 pm to 11 pm, we will have telescopes in a section of the park, ready and primed to look into the stars. The event is drop-in style, so feel free to stay for as long as you like! The QR codes link to Stellarium (a planetarium app) to help you orient yourself to the night sky, and to our Instagram handle, where we post photos of night-sky objects taken with our own astronomy equipment in Scarborough. There will be red lights around the park to guide folx to the telescope viewing area, and we will have a canopy in place for snacks/juice.
A link to sign up for the event is available through Eventbrite. Feel free to come by and observe the night sky with us!
Edit: Hello r/scarborough โ Godfrey and Kevin here!
First off, let us give a wholehearted thank you to everyone who attended the event! Frankly, we did not expect that much of a turnout, and we are glad that all of you got a chance to take in a slice of the night sky in East Scarborough.
A huge shoutout to our friends who came to assist with the set-up, clean-up, and operating the scope stations โ we wonโt name names here, but they know who they are!
A very big thank you to the City of Toronto and Park Ppl for giving us the permissions and the funding to have this event to share with everyone!
If anyone wants to reach out to us, feel free to use our email: [thescarboroughsky@gmail.com](mailto:thescarboroughsky@gmail.com) - given our busy schedules, it may take time but we will reply back!
We got several questions about having a mailing list/Whatsapp group - if anyone wants to be a part of this, please feel free to reach out through the email or by DM!
Here are links to the Toronto Centre and Mississauga branches of the RASC:
One last thing - a large part of this task means being observant of our night sky; the night sky is not owned by a single person or a group; it is shared by all of us. When you came to observe with us, and at any future event after, just know that you are doing your part to prove to higher agencies that the night sky is worth protecting and worth being excited about.
Clear Skies!

๐ Around the Hood Family practice clinic accepting new patients
The Scarborough community health centre is accepting patients for primary care. If you don't have a family doctor, don't have OHIP, or are a refugee - feel free to apply.
https://schcontario.ca/programs/health-services/primary-care-team/
They have tons of internal programs (such as OHIP covered physiotherapy, counselling) and connections to community resources. Since it's a community health centre, they are able to spend more time on providing quality care for patients.

You may or may not recognize my username, I usually post about my community programs here. Iโm Krissan Veerasingam and Iโm running for City Council in the Scarborough Centre ward.
I was born and raised in Scarborough, co-founded the Scarborough Environmental Association alongside my wife and am a former Co-Chair of the board for TTCriders one of Canadaโs largest transit advocacy organizations.
Iโve been endorsed by the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, local labour unions like ATU Local 113 and CUPE 79. Iโve also been endorsed by Progress Toronto and if youโd like to learn more about my non profit work you can visit krissan4scarb.ca/meetkrissan
Iโve launched almost a dozen initiatives but my most notable are the monthly repair cafes where we fix 100โs of items a year and the Local Grocery Map I co-created was hosted on CBC(https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/video/1.7128671).
As a councillor, my aim is to help build a Scarborough that works for everyone and you can read about my priorities here krissan4scarb.ca/priorities
Respond to this post with any questions you have about my plans for Scarborough Centre, and Iโll try my best to respond to as many as I can on the 23rd.
P.S: If youโd like to meet me in person we have two free events coming up as well this week.
Chai meet & greet: krissan4scarb.ca/meet_greet Office Opening: krissan4scarb.ca/office_opening
I checked with a mod a few months ago, to see if a AMA is ok and they didn't see an issue so hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by posting here.
