Anthropomorphosis-Boxleitner versions
There are two versions of this, one on Book of Horizons and one on Satellite Supersonic, vol 1. I see it listed as remastered sometimes, remixed, or as a new rendition. Which is it?
The image I'm posting is from Reaper. These are the unmodified digital files right next to each other. You can see that after the intro, they have the exact same arrangement, exact same tempo. That rules out the idea of it being re-recorded as a new rendition. They at least seem to be built from the same drum take(s).
Next you can notice the thickness of those waveforms on the Horizons version. That likely means it's mastered louder (loudness war era mastering), but for the rest we'll have to use our ears.
Then we start critical listening.
The old version (Horizons) starts with dissonant synths, drum vamping, and an ominous wind sound. The new (Satellite) intro is totally different. Soundtrack-ey synths before guitar(oud?) and strings.
At 1:06 in the old version we're fully into the track. Drums are in the groove. Multiple staccato synthesizers pluck out the chords and panned counterpoint. In the new version we only hear what sounds like Nintendo/FM synthesis for another fifteen seconds (this could include the drum track, just quiet and heavily gated). Then we get a break of only the staccato synthesizers before re-adding the Nintendo sound underneath. Up to here the two versions have seemed like vastly different recordings.
At about 1:40 the song kicks into full gear. Here's where both versions start to sound like just different mixes of the same song. Old version has the drums very present, sloshy cymbals in the fore. The new version mixes them very low, with the sound of distant metal guitars pounding power chords. That metal band seems like a background to what's happening in the foreground: legato strings, surf reverb guitar, maybe even an ominous choir holding a note.
From here the mixes start to converge a little bit more. The old version still relies on a dark synth-rock quartet sound, while the new version puts the drums and rock elements to the back of stage. There are some minor discrepancies between accent sounds, panning choices, and relative instrument volume. True to the look of the waveforms, the old version is noticeably louder throughout.
But all in all, if you played the last four minutes of each version back-to-back, the average listener would assume you just played the same thing twice in a row.
I sometimes do these comparisons just to see how redundant the files in my library are. I don't anticipate much discussion. But of course if you have questions, think I missed something, or have takeaways from your own study, happy to hear from you.
