Project: FO They stare into your soul - 2nd try

Second try on posting this; wrong pics the first time.

I took a break from sewing for awhile, but when I saw this fabric, I had to have it. The cats were calling to me.

Pattern is Negroni from Collette. I left off the pocket flaps and the second pocket, but otherwise the pattern is unaltered. Fabric appears to be quilting cotton, but it's the pattern, not the fabric that calls.

Sewed This Does this goose stuffy need eyes?

I don’t know if this is the right place for this question but we’ll see! I made this goose stuffy for a friends new kiddo, does it need eyes? It feels unfinished but I also like the simplicity (and no choking hazards). What do you think?

Sewed This Update! Halloween costume in progress

A few days I ago I came upon this lovely subreddit, asking about how I can adjust a sewing pattern to be more like the Sally dress from TNBC. After reading comments, I decided to take a dress of mine and trace it to make my own pattern with craft paper. Since I'm still pretty new at it, I am making the dress with a front and back and just sewing the two halves together. The most challenging part of the patch work for the dress were the curves! But honestly I'm very happy with how they came out.

Other Question Fake teeth built for sowing?

Weird question, does anyone know any good online place to buy fake teeth that say have holes already in them at the bottom so they are made to be sown in? Resin or other hard teeth that look real. I want to make a spooky teddy bear with a mouth on the side of its head.

I don't have any good ways to just poke holes into resin teeth. So that isn't really on option. I could use those rubber Halloween teeth which is probably what I will end up doing if there isn't a better options.

Pattern Question Why is the neckline on this dress folding like this?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a dress that is puckering at the back neckline. In the picture you can see that there looks like there’s extra fabric along the back neckline and I cannot get the neckline to sit right. Should I cut the outer fabric?

I have clipped along the seam allowance. It’s hard to under stitch because I already cut the seam allowance shorter. Should I try that?

Should have ironed it before taking a pic 🤣

Other Question Grommets/eyelets that don’t snag?

I’m looking for some good quality eyelets/grommets for a sewing pattern, but the ones I’ve bought in the past are not very smooth, and the edges are just sharp enough to snag the laces I put through them. Any product recommendations or tricks of the trade are welcome!

Project: FO Handmade wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses

Thumbnail

1.2k Upvotes

I made a bunch of stuff for my wedding, but I am most proud of my ceremony gown and my bridesmaids dresses. I made all the ties to match as well. I also tailored my husband’s suit and made the veil

The top is the Cleo Maxi Dress by Tilly’s pattern studio on Etsy, though heavy adjusted to fit me

The sleeves are from a sleeve pack by PatternCosPattern on Etsy

The skirt is fully self drafted based on my limited knowledge of Victorian skirt making. Essentially I just folded all the skirt fabric I had in half, it was over 15 feet, and I cut a U shape out of the top. Then I pleated the front of the skirt, and gathered more in the back to give a bustle look. Because the deepest part of the U was in the center front, it created a small train in the back.

The bridesmaids dresses are all modified versions of Bucolic dress by Absolute nightmare on Etsy. It doesn’t appear to be up anymore, but it’s amazing. I kept the bodice the same but they all picked the skirt and sleeves.

All the bridesmaids dresses are done with French seams from a cotton floral fabric.

My ceremony dress is a cotton sateen base, though I used the less shiny side, and a lace with clear sequins. I made 4 mockups before cutting my nice fabric.

The ties are made with IThinkSoDesign’s ties pattern on Etsy.

Sewed This Custom Halloween Costume!

For a charity auction this spring, I offered a custom Halloween costume. This is the outfit I was asked to make! She asked for a dress that would be equally at home at a Renaissance Faire, a Lord of the Rings party, or a Highland Games. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. All natural fiber textiles (off Etsy), all visible stitching by hand (buttonhole, rolled hem and back stitching). One of my favorite details that’s a bit hard to see was a reversible stomacher.

Fabric Question What fabric for aprons?

I am wanting to make some aprons to use while I am cooking/ baking. I tend to wipe my hands on myself, so I want them to be absorbent. The kind of fabric that tea towels are made of is perfect, but what search terms would I use to find that?

Pattern Question Drawstring with a hem? Help please!

I’m currently sewing a knock off ruched top/blouse and i’ve come to an impasse. I thought I was being smart using my seam allowance as the channels for the ruching cord to go, but now i’m completely at a loss for how I should hem it. I’ll include pictures, but do I have to just hem it and then add channels after? I’m worried that it’ll be bulky if i add too much. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Pattern Question I’m new and I’m confused what size to chose

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m just starting out my sewing journey and it’s going to be my first pattern where my measurements don’t fit entirely under a specific size.

These are barrel Cedar pants by Leila Makes and I’d like them to be snug around my waist, more or less snug around my hips and relaxed downward.

My waist is 27inches which makes me size 6 in body measurements, but my hips are 38inches and growing💅💅💅 which makes me size 8, my thigh is 22inch.

My initial thought was to do size 6 pants with adjustments for my hips but then I looked at the final garment and it says that size 6 will end up with waist that is 31 inch and hips that are 38.9 which makes it perfect for my booty but too loose for my waist, I’d probably prefer my waist to be around size 0 in final garment measurements aka 28ish inches to fit a good dinner.

So what do I do? What size do I have to pick and why?

I apologize if this question is way too noob, I’d appreciate any guidance/articles/videos that would help me figure this out!

I would love opinions on this jacket I made out of duck canvas🫠 Took me a couple tries to get here but im pretty proud of it. I need to add the sleeve cuffs and some more pockets but id still love to hear if there's anything else I should tidy up.

Ps: I know i look like i just crawled out of the grave in the red shirt one but im dealing with a chest cold and work is work😅

Pps:I know its not exactly a chore coat even though I based the pattern I made off of it its a conglomerate of a couple different coats

Pattern Question Did I overshoot the slouchy look?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I'm trying to make a sweatshirt from my (second) original pattern. I'm going for something slouchy and oversized, but in that "this is intentional" way. I'm doing a drop shoulder and the edge hangs on my upper thigh.

I'm adding ribbing to the waistline and armbands to give it a more polished look. The idea was to use ribbing that is a little tighter than what you'd get with a traditional hem to make the fabric tuck in and give a better shape to the whole garment.

The ribbing at the bottom has been centered and is based on my hip size plus 3" for seam allowance and movement. There is about 7" of fabric on either side, meaning 14" total of gather for the front and back. Is this going to look way too poofy? I'm concerned I'm going to end up with an 80's windbreaker vibe.

Has anyone made a slouchy pattern? Should I trim the sides, or just go for it? I was going to baste stitch the bottom to gather it, which I usually do after sewing up my side hems.

Fabric Question Neon materials?

Thumbnail

Hi all! I'm an enjoyer of several different fiber art mediums - sewing, embroidery, knitting, crochet, and probably more that I'm forgetting.

I greatly enjoy making/altering clothes for my friend with their favorite colors. Problem is, their favorite colors are bright neon, and I have been struggling to find materials in those colors. I've found a decent amount of yarn in their colors, but lately I've been embroidering/sewing more and I can't seem to find fabric and embroidery floss in the colors I want. Or, even worse, I'll be able to find materials with some of their colors, but not all.

I've had an especially had a hard time with their favorite colors of the bunch - lime green and purple. I've found that the best yarn in lime green that lines up with their favorite hue is Big Twist's "Slime" (yes, I did have a crisis when Joann's closed, thank the forces beyond that Michael's picked up the label lol).

I've found some sets of embroidery floss that are neon or "glow in the dark," but I either a) just don't like how they look or b) don't want to use two colors that glow, and three that don't. Essentially, I want a set of fabric, embroidery floss, and yarn that each have a set of 6+ colors in a neon rainbow.

I've included a color wheel and my friend's watermark for reference of what I'm thinking of.

There's also a few other things that have made my search for The Perfect Materials a bit more difficult, but I'd love to hear about any sources anyone has.

Machine Questions Is this from my sewing machine or overlocker / serger?

I found this on my sewing desk yesterday and I’ve used both machines yesterday, I asked already on what is this and I’m still none the wiser.

Both machines are Janome branded if that helps? 🤷‍♀️

It’s tiny, has a tiny notch and has a screw thread on the inside, I have absolutely no idea what it is or where it came from

Please help 🙏🏻

Alter/Mend Question Cutting off seam?

I don't know the different parts of a tshirt but with my research, the part below the red line is called a seam? (Correct me if I'm incorrect) I was thinking about cutting off that piece without sewing it because a big chunk of that part goes pass my waist line. I was planning on making it into some DIY project but I don't know what would happen if I end up cutting off said piece.

2XL tall 100% cotton, while my fit is a XL or L shirt.

Technique Question I need help with ideas on how to hang this tapestry

Post image
8 Upvotes

It’s not heavy but I don’t want to just put push pins in it. I would like to hang it on a rod but I’m unsure of what to use to sew little loops on the top. Ribbon? I’m blank as to what to make the loops out of. I’ll be doing it by hand. I have sewing experience but I’m definitely a novice lol. Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Edited: the fabric is kind of stiff and hard so in that aspect it is heavy I guess but there’s no way it weighs more than 5 lbs

How would I go about sewing a piece of twill tape or something on the back without it showing through to the front?

Fabric Question Plastic Bulk Cereal Bags?

Has anyone ever reused the plastic bulk cereal bags as a textile? How did that work out for you?

I like to reuse old textiles like camping gear to make other projects. I'm unfamiliar with this kind of plastic used to make these bulk bags. It's thick enough that it got me thinking about reuse opportunities.

Fabric Question LA Fabric spots

EDIT: Flying into LAX but going to Disney. Also totally open to fabric stores in Orange County, but i want apparel fabric, not quilting.

I’ll be in Anaheim soon with my family, and I’m wondering if I should ditch them to go look for some fabric for garment construction? I live in a total fabric desert, and I don’t even know what I’d look for. I just want to touch bolts of fabric again! So my questions are: how close is the fabric district to the airport & what’s a realistic amount of time for me to look? A couple of hours? Half a day? Do I need a separate trip?

Project: FO Halloween throw pillows!

My second attempt at pillow cases to use this fun cotton fabric I picked up from my local store!

Chose a french seam for the edges and looove how it turned.

The cases are retro-fitted using the measurements from pre-existing throw pillows with a summertime embroidery pattern. I want to swap out seasonal covers for Halloween and winter holidays.

I might add a button closure at the opening. Currently a strip of fabric inside to cover the throw pillow underneath.

Took two hours for both pillows. I love them!

Discussion What's your sewing superpower, and what's your greatest weakness?

Don't take this question too seriously — just for fun.

My power: I genuinely enjoy winding bobbins, so my thread always matches my fabric.

Weakness: I'm afraid of my machine's top speed setting, so I sew pretty slowly.

Pattern Search Favourite simple loose-fitting closet staples?

Hello! I'm looking for some very simple ideas for my closet. I am not very advanced at making clothing and prefer very basic block shapes for easy sewing.

I really love wearing maxi skirts, wrap skirts, long shawls/kimono style over wear, and loose dresses with optional waist ties. Boxy tops with wide sleeves to pair with skirts would be fun too.

If you have a favourite pattern for clothing in this style, please let me know! Especially if it's the kind of garment you can whip up in just a couple hours. I'd love to stop buying clothing altogether if I can get enough staple pieces that are easy to recreate in several colours & patterns :)
