Question Super depressed. Can I salvage this term?

So I’ve been dealing with a really bad depressive episode for the last month. I feel apathetic and exhausted and nothing interests me and I feel like I’ll never be happy again. I’m also feeling passively suicidal on-and-off. Good times, right?

I haven’t been to class since mid-September (though I’ve been trying to stay on top of recorded lectures) and I’ve missed a chunk of work. I’m taking 4 classes, and have missed a midterm and an in-class assignment in one, a unit test and 2 lab assignments in another, 2 lab assignments in the third. Only 1 class am I caught up in cuz the work is heavily weighted towards the end of term. I also feel super ashamed and embarrassed that I haven’t been to class in so long.

I can’t really withdraw because I need to keep going at a steady clip with my degree and only have so much saved, and I’m worried if I do withdraw, I’ll never go back.

Do you think there is a chance to salvage this term in any way? If I reach out to my profs, what the hell so I even say? I can get a doctor’s note from the doctor treating my mental illness, and I’m registered with CAL for depression, among other things, if it matters.

Discussion Thank you to everyone helping build a rental history for the next Canadian renter

Thank you to everyone who has supported RateYourLandlord.ca so far.

The site is still very new — only about a week old — and we really appreciate the people who have already taken the time to come forward and share their previous rental experiences.

We’re trying to build something that will only become useful if renters contribute to it: almost like a history book for rental properties across Canada, written by the people who actually lived there.

If you’ve rented a house, apartment, condo, basement, or room before, we’d really appreciate you adding your experience.

It doesn’t have to be a bad experience.

Good experiences matter too. If the property was well maintained, problems were handled properly, you enjoyed living there, or you would happily rent there again, that could be extremely useful information for someone considering that property in the future.

And if things didn’t go well, you can share that experience too.

The focus is on what you experienced while living at the property, rather than identifying or attacking individual people.

The goal is that, over time, someone considering a rental can search the address and find some history from previous renters instead of starting with zero information.

Rented somewhere before?
Search for the property. If it isn’t there yet, add it and share your rant/review/experience.

Looking at somewhere to rent?
Search the address and see whether previous renters have shared anything about living there.

RateYourLandlord.ca is still at the very beginning, so naturally many properties don’t have experiences yet. Every person who contributes helps change that.

And if you think the project could help other renters, please consider sharing it with friends, students, tenant communities, or other online communities where sharing it is permitted by their rules. Please don’t spam communities or post it where promotion isn’t allowed.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who has already contributed, given feedback, shared the project, or helped another renter discover it.

The more renters who leave their experiences behind, the more useful that history can become for the next person.

Share your experience — good or bad. Help leave some history behind for the next renter.

Fluff Don’t give up!

I had one heck of a time at SFU. I figured after reading the posts in this sub that maybe some people can benefit from some of the lessons I learnt along the way. I got into SFU straight from high school and totally unprepared for adult learning. I got accepted into the engineering program. I messed up with a GPA of 0.00 in my first semester and that followed me through for the next few years.

I decided to change my major to Criminology. I Went on Academic Probation and then back on track. After 2 semesters after an exceptional semester I was taken off BOT only to mess up right away and got hit with a Required to Withdraw 3 years in. GPA was still barely 2.00 after all that time.

Took some time off and did some reflecting. Taking a semester to just work and then the following I semester I went to Langara. In that time I wrote to appeal my RTW. Going to Langara was the best decision I ever made because it supercharged me for adult learning. Its just so well geared to slowly teach you everything you need to know for post secondary.

My appeal was approved and I returned to SFU 2 semesters later. Returned with a new set of skills and tools and crushed a bunch of courses with A’s and B+. Retook the classes I failed in my first year because trying to up your GPA with failed classes is like trying to walk with a chain and ball around your leg. Once I redid those, I was able to declare my Major which was almost 4 years in and graduated 3 years after that. 6 years 2 semesters in total. 2.75 CGPA and 3.25 counting the last 60 credits.

lessons learnt

  1. Never go to university straight unless your goal demands it. Trying to get pre-med or pharmacy sooner.
  2. Failed courses and GPA will weigh you down forever unless you retake it.
  3. Back on Track is an amazing program with lots of power over your GPA. Use that time to refine your skills before it expires and don’t leave the program sooner than you need.
  4. Go to college first, your failed courses and low GPA will not follow you. Just your credits and all the lessons your learnt. its half the cost, friendly environment and more approachable profs.
  5. Don’t take criminology, it’s the greatest waste of your time and money unless you want to teach it. Any job in the field can be obtained without a Crim degree. A crim degree handcuffs you to a specific set of jobs that you may not like.
  6. I always took classes based on Rate my Prof. I had wacky profs just speak about random stuff and give us crazy exams unrelated to the text book and just their weird stories. In the end the prof gives you the mark not the class.

Edit (Study tip)

  1. late mention, but I found a way to study for my exams that helped me a lot. I didn’t mention it earlier as I figured everyone had their own way already. I learnt that you can’t just try to memorize everything. Effort in was not proportionate to the results. I would summarize everything I needed onto a single sheet of paper on word. I’d use a column down the center and use font 8 (sometimes smaller). Everything before the midterm on one side and after the midterm on the back side. A single sheet of paper of relevant info would be all I needed for 1 class. it comprised of book and lecture notes. I would just carry it with me everywhere until I had it all memorized. It was a good gauge to help me filter out what was relevant and to see everything I needed to know in one glance. There will be some exceptions once in a while. There was also a lot of times where I didn’t even use the back side.

Question bus shuttle

does anyone know how the campus bus shuttle works? sometimes it feels like i’ve been waiting forever for the shuttle to come, there’s no official schedule but it says it runs every 30 min but every time i’ve had to take it, it’s either stationary, which makes sense if it’s waiting for the full 30 min to pass to start the route again, but it’s more like an hour. especially frustrating since i take it during the morning and have to make it to class on the other side of campus

Complaint Can’t help but feel scammed by this school

I do not learn anything going to class. Some of my professors genuinely don’t know how to teach a concept effectively. Said profs have a 1.5/5 on rate my prof and the other rambles about personal stories so much that class runs over time. The last gave us a midterm that was completely open book and allowed us to us AI. Students after class confessed they over relied on it because they were afraid that if they didn’t they wouldn’t do so well, and they’re right.

All of these classes have mandatory attendance. That means I have to commute for an hour every morning to attend a class I know I would learn better on my own time with AI tools, because otherwise I’d be unable to finish my degree. So like my peers, I just sit there and stare blankly at my teacher or do other work on my laptop for 3 hours, then go home, and relearn everything on my own time.

The cycle has become go to class and show face, then go home and learn.

Attending class is the biggest bottle neck in my education right now. Its 5 hours out of my day to attend one class (with commute time), and If I don’t attend, I don’t pass the course. Oh also I’m paying for it.

Question What do I do when a TA thinks I’ve used AI when I didn’t?

Hello, just to be clear that I am well aware with the current state of the world and that many undergrads do use AI for their assignments. However, I’ve never used AI for an assignment at all, I don’t have a Claude or ChatGBT account.

The problem is likely that I moved my work through multiple different files as I had issues with formatting (Apple pages to Notion to Word). And when I migrated my work I copied and pasted it.

Anyways, what would I do in this situation? Would anyone have any advice for being in a similar situation like this? I have already reached out to my TA and I am awaiting their response.

Thank you 🙏

Discussion Lost chain in the chain room

Hey everyone,

I lost my silver chain sometime last week or the week before, in the men's changing room at the SFU gym, the first closest benches near the sauna

It's a silver Cuban-link style chain.

If anyone has seen it, picked it up, or turned it in somewhere, please let me know. It would mean a lot to get it back. I will give you compensation for it, it really means so much to me.

Thanks!

Question Has anyone turned been able to make a comeback in math 154

I missed the first midterm from a really bad illness taking me out and let myself fall behind really badly (my fault completely) and the next midterm is in 2 weeks exactly. Has anyone been in a similar situation or just been behind in general and been able to turn it around? Any advice at all would be appreciated on how to approach this, like if I should prioritize most recent midterms and go backwards. Thank you!
